We won't be getting another new Pokemon game in its main series until at least 2025 via Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Until then, our journeys throughout Scarlet & Violet will continue, and even though both parts of its Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC have dropped, support for the newest Pokemon games continues. That might not include improvements to the games' performance that trainers have been calling for since launch, but it does include powerful Pokemon free to everyone provided you claim them in time.

The next powerful Pokemon being distributed as a mystery gift is Gyarados. Not just any Gyarados, but one based on the version of the Pokemon Melvin 'Shaman' Keh used to help him become the Singapore National Champion in 2023. The Gyarados will be level 50 when you claim it and its Tera type is Steel. Anyone with Scarlet & Violet can claim the special Gyarados for free and below are the steps you need to follow to add it to your team.

How To Get Your Gyarados Mystery Gift

First off you will need to fire up your copy of Pokemon Scarlet or Violet on Nintendo Switch as the Gyarados can only be claimed on your console. Open your menu once your save has loaded and click on the Poke Portal option. On the next menu you will need to select Mystery Gift, and then finally Get With Code/Password.

Once your Switch is connected to the internet - it will do this automatically when clicking the get with code/password option if it wasn't already - you will then be prompted to enter a code. To claim your Gyarados, you will need to enter the code GYARAD0S2023SG. If entered before June 30, 2024, successful activation of the code will result in the Gyarados being placed directly into your Scarlet & Violet party, or a box if your party is already full.

Pay close attention when entering the code as the Os present are actually zeroes. If you've been having trouble activating the code, that might be why.

What Do You Get With Your Gyarados?

You can't spit in Scarlet & Violet without hitting a Magikarp, so you may be wondering why Gyarados has been chosen as a Mystery Gift when they're not that hard to come by. Well, if you don't already have one and you don't fancy the grind that is evolving a Magikarp, here's your solution. If you do already have a Gyarados, there's a strong chance this one is better.

On top of it being presented to you at level 50, the Mystery Gift Gyarados will be holding an Aguav Berry which restores some of its HP whenever it drops below 50 percent. It will also know Waterfall and Thunder Wave, among other moves, but you can change that if you want to and have the TMs to do so.

Pokemon Violet's Paldean journey has been expanded on via the two-part DLC, The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero.

Above all else for me, even if it's a Pokemon I don't desperately want or need, these Mystery Guft distributions always serve as a handy reminder to jump back into the latest Pokemon games. I fired my copy of Violet back up for the first time in weeks to claim my Gyarados and I'm now back to filling out my Pokedex, using my new Gyarados to get the job done. Having a Pokemon modeled after one used to win a National Championship is pretty handy when it comes to knowing what to do to make your own Pokemon more powerful too.
