Massive Genius character and honestly the whole "A Hit Is A Hit" episode is just the absolute worst....

Have been rewatching episodes lately and there's so many cringe worthy moments in that episode lol.......all of the dialogue and characters scream "I'm a pasty white dude that has no idea how black people sound or act so I'm just gonna make it up for this script....." Some of the biggest wtf lines:

"Bold men make bold statements...." "My name is Orange J... I am down with Massive Genius." "I grew up in the projects....and I killed a man! Later, I got a degree..." "Expect to hear from Goldstein Baum and Waranov!!"

Lolol seriously, WTF!? I've literally never met a single black guy in my life that's sounded even remotely like that, let alone a gangsta rappa.... I couldn't put my finger on it at first, because it's not a bunch of black guys that sound white.... That I've def seen before...it's because it's a bunch of black dudes, trying really hard to act like how a white guy thinks that black dudes act and sound.... Like, they could have literally just asked the black actors playing the part "Yo, does this sound right... how bout these names, do they sound legit...? " Even Larry David knew when to stay in his lane and let the black guy handle the black dialogue... I mean who wold you rather eff with, Crazy Eyez Killah or... Orange J?

My favorite line from that episode, Massive Genius asks Hesh, "so you bought horses with your royalties and Little Jimmie's royalties, whatever became of those?"

Silvio "He bought horse!"

Just realized he was talking about heroin.

u/Shovelbone avatar

Very allegorical!

The sacred and the propane

Two different things, completely!

That doesn’t seem like something Italian mob guys would just give up to a couple unknown bruthas

They're talking about the black entertainer who was partnered with Hesh. The gist is that Hesh used his earnings to buy horses and the entertainer (Jimmy?) used his to buy heroine. They aren't giving anything up, they're insulting the entertainer.

Love that line, first time I watched it I didn't get it either, but I was like 11.

u/bootygoon2 avatar

You watched the Sopranos at 11? Did most of the show not go over your head being that young? I’m not even trying to be sarcastic or anything either I’m genuinely curious lol

u/Bat_Nervous avatar

When the show debuted I was 19. I caught episodes here and there, but eventually mainlined the whole show when I was about 32. There was NO WAY I would've understood even half of it when I was 19. Or 21 or 23.

u/bootygoon2 avatar

Yeah I watched the show at 24 (going onto 25) and I understood things pretty well. But I know if I watched it at any point in my teens or even early twenties a lot of stuff would go over my head or I just wouldn’t get certain things. All the talk about depression, anxiety, upbringings, trauma, etc. wouldn’t resonate with me like it did had I watched at a younger age

For real. I don’t think I truly understood and appreciated The Sopranos until my mid-20s. Just that little bit of extra life experience goes a long way.

u/Sample-Away avatar

I just watched it for the 4th time at 22

I've always wondered what it's like for kids who watched the Sopranos. This thing of ours is so layered, and it's common knowledge kids are retarded

I started watching season 2 when I was about 10-11. My dad had watched season 1, and then between my folks and the neighbors it became a weekly Sunday night ritual. Think big gatherings in the living room with pizza or hoagies, and lots of commentary after. Honestly they were some of the best memories of my childhood. Obviously there was a lot I didn’t understand, but I definitely got the basic contrast between how big and bad Tony was supposed to be and how fragile he really was. I’ve now rewatched the series probably a dozen times. It feels like I grew up with these people.

Well I watched the first two seasons when I was that young bc we had the vhs sets at my house. I'm sure there was a bunch of shit that went over my head but not as much as you would think would go over an 11 year Olds head. I grew up in an Italian neighborhood in brooklyn and by 12 me and my crew were already breaking into houses and shit so we weren't really angels.

u/Silver_Fact_3218 avatar

You and your what? Your crew? You're a captain when I say you're a captain... or if you make it out of 4th grade. Now get the fuck outta hea!

Lolol seriously, WTF!? I've literally never met a single black guy in my life that's sounded even remotely like that, let alone a gangsta rappa...

that was kind of the point of the episode dude. That they were pretending to be gangsters to sell albums as opposed to the older era of music the mob actually ran followed by the rap era where actual gangsters became rappers.

u/bsharp95 avatar

I don’t get the hate this episode always gets. Visiting Day is hilarious, Chris throwing a tantrum in the studio is funny. The conflict between the Italians and a black musician is interesting and fits into some of the shows themes regarding the assimilation of Italian Americans and their treatment of other ethnic groups. Also, the idea of Hesh and Tony’s dad being sharks in the music business is a classic mafia storyline. Imho season one gets slept on way too much here

u/enraged_hbo_max_user avatar

Visiting Day IS hilarious and I kinda wish there had been callbacks to them throughout the series. Like have them playing on Philly Leotardo’s car radio, and have a poster advertising a concert on the wall at rutgers

u/I8TheLastPieceaPizza avatar

Would've been very allegorical to have Philly's passenger say "TURN THAT OFF"

Visiting Day should start playing when Phil opens the closet door

Season 1 is the most based season, half of the scenes are just badass fat guys in tracksuits eating deli meat to rock music

u/Heels1939 avatar

Even the weaker Sopranos episodes always contain some gems. But I tend to agree with the OP that the writing is sloppy in this one.

u/Cinnabon_Gene avatar

because OP is a FAGGGGGGG

Plus the parallels between the and an and b story lines. A hit is a hit, could be talking about music, could be Junior reasoning that he needs to take Tony out.

Here again to tell people that Massive G was based on Master P.

Rappers had historically focused more on the artistic and glamorous side of hip hop music while paying very little attention to the business, investment, and financial aspects. All that changed in 1996 when Master P signed a music distribution deal with Priority Records, one where No Limit Records would retain 100% ownership of their master recordings and keep 85% of their record's sales while giving Priority 15% in return for pressing and distribution which allows No Limit to profit from future sales such as catalogs and reissues. Master P went on to make hundreds of millions of dollars from this deal.

Master P set up his music label because black rappers were getting fucked by white execs in the music industry, á la Hesh and the do wack a doo. He has a degree in biz administration and

"Master P had a whole marketing movement. He was the first person to market the way a corporate entity like IBM would market to their clientele."

How dare we learn something in this sub!

Meh you have to remember the show was filmed in the late 90s and early 2000s. A lot of popular slang from then has become corny and stereotypical. It's the same with the Italian slang as well.

Massive genius was a try hard intellectual, that's all. You're focusing too much on the character being black. He talks like a try hard intellectual would talk. The rest of the characters use slang that was popular then but now seems dated and comical. Ever listen to old wu tang? As for orange J, there's literally a rapper from that era named juicy j lol

u/CuriousRedditor4000 avatar

Funny enough, in the early seasons when it came to particular lines Robert Iler would try and tell the writers that boys his age wouldn't talk like that and they basically told him to fuck off.

Buncha fartknockers those writers

I always thought Massive Genius was one of the most interesting secondary characters on the series. I would really like to have seen the lawsuit storyline play out. Just to see how the story would evolve. During the meeting between Massive Genius' crew and the Soprano crew, the Soprano crew was very insulting and confrontational, while Massive Genius would not take the bait. Massive Genius remained focused on the issue of getting what was owed and maintaining the high ground in the face of some pretty racist opposition. That last statement he makes, removing his hat, "what did she call him?... Oh yes…. That nice man I believed she said!"
