GT vs CSK Highlights, IPL 2024: Gujarat Titans beat Chennai Super Kings by 35 runs in Ahmedabad

honi smacked a one-handed six on the leg-side something to cheer for the CSK fans amidst a horrid performance from their side on the night. They face Rajasthan Royals on Sunday noon and it is going to be a do-or-die for them. 

Rashid Khan came into the bowl in the 18th over and picked both Jadeja and Santner. That is for CSK for tonight. Though there have been two tons in the first innings it is Mohit who has been fantastic on the night. It is a long way back here for CSK from here on.

Mohit for the third over in a row picked a wicket. The veteran has broken the back of this chase for the Chennai Super Kings. It is DUbe who tried to hit the ball into the stands of a full toss and was caught at long on the boundary. MS Dhoni has walked in.

Tyagi is done for the day though at times he did bowl well the skipper would not be pleased with his overall figures. It will be interesting to see how Tewatia will use his resources from here on. Will he go back to spin or will he use pace in the remainder of the overs. 

Moeen who has gone past half-century got undone by Mohit's slower one as well. The batter tried to hoik the ball on the leg-side and was caught at cow corner by Noor. Jadeja has walked into the middle it is an important passage of play for CSK.

Tyagi has returned to the attack and delivered an excellent over under the circumstances. Both Moeen and Dube have common strengths and weaknesses facing high pace bumpers and looks like GT is going to use that here. 

Daryl Mitchell lost his wicket to Mohit Sharma. It was a knuckle ball from the bowler which Mitchell could not pick and hit straight to long-on. Dube has walked into the middle and he needs to go after the bowling right from the word go here. 

Rashid Khan bowled another expensive over. This has been a bit all too easy for Super Kings in the last 30 minutes or so. Slowly but steadily this game is turning into a humdinger. We might see an introduction of pace soon into the game. 

After a good over from Noor Ahmed Rashid bowled an expensive over and Noor in his second over went for three back-to-back sixes. This partnership is now starting to get concerning for the Titans. The needs to get a breakthrough here immediately. 

Noor is the first spinner who came into the attack and the ball is gripping a bit. There is no dew in the outfield either. It is going to be the toughest phase to deal with for CSK. The way this game might go will be decided in the next few overs. 

Interesting this from GT they are continuing to keep bowling pace. Tyagi hit hard length and Mitchell made full use of it and extracted another expensive over. It is still not a cause to worry for GT but they need to pick a wicket here in the next few overs.

Sandeep Warrier has changed ends here and he delivered an expensive over. He bowled back-off-length and both the batters went after him. This is interesting from GT they have not introduced spin yet in this game. 

Karthik Tyagi has been brought into the attack and he bowled with pace. The recovery has been decent from Moeen and Mitchell but the challenge only gets much tougher with both the wrist spinners coming into the attack now to control the middle overs.

Gill has given third over to Umesh Yadav. It has been an excellent spell from the bowler in his comeback match. Though he only picked one wicket he ran in and bowled with some proper heat today. Good signs for GT in the remainder of campaign.

Mitchell hits one for six of Warrier. A much-needed big-over for CSK. They are way behind this game at this point. They need few big overs quickly in the remainder of this Powerplay to get back into this game.

Another one bites the dust for Super Kings it is the skipper who pulled the ball and Rashid Khan at square-leg takes an excellent catch. This is turning into a nightmare game for CSK. It feels like now their Run Rate too is going to take a massive dent.

This is a horrible start for CSK. In a must-win game, they lost two wickets for nothing and GT bowlers are bowling well. There is a spring in the step of the fielders as well. It is already looking look a no-way back for the Super Kings from here on. 

Rahane tried to sneak a single of the final ball as he dabbed and ran, however, Miller close to the batters threw the ball and hit the stumps directly and Rachin departed. As we update Rahane departs and tries to work the ball on the leg-side got the leading edge straight to Rahul Tewatia.

It was a great innings, very happy to execute (the plans) in this game. I think the wicket is great to bat on. Mixing it well and going wide will be good (for our bowlers.) It was sticking into the surface initially but the wicket got better. The slower balls are gripping more. It was great to watch Gill bat, learning things from him. I don't think it (playing well against CSK) is relatable to Chennai, just trying to give my best in every game. This knock was a special one for me.

That's the end of the innings a decent final few overs from CSK made sure that GT won't go past 250. However, it is a massive total to chase for CSK. They need to make sure that even if they don't get two points from this they won't lose it by big margins. An interesting second half coming up stay with us for all the updates.

Vinayakk: For lovers of symmetry, both GT's openers were beautifully placed at 96 off 48 balls at the start of the 17th over. The first one to get to the three-figure mark between Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan would be scoring the 100th hundred in the history of the Indian Premier League. On Thursday night, Virat Kohli came within a couple of strikes of getting to that landmark. Of what the King missed out on, the heir apparent got there. It was a classic Shubman innings at his favourite venue in Ahmedabad, but it was a much more vocal celebration than what we have gotten used to from him. He jumped in the air and yelled out an expletive. Shortly after, Sai would get to the landmark too, scoring the 101st century in the league with a six over fine leg. A stunning opening partnership.

That is an excellent over from Deshpande. He picked both Shubman Gill and Sudharsan in that last over. Both were the deliveries where pace was taken off by the bowler. Looks like the wicket seems to be getting increasingly slower now. 

Both openers have gone past 100s now. First, it was Shubman Gill who played a sumptuous boundary to get his ton and it was Sudharsan who played one over fine leg to get past his century. 

A rare good over from Shardul Thakur the last one. He did not let any boundaries in the over. GT from here with the batting left to come should be looking to get around 250-mark. For CSK to chase this they need blinders from couple of their top four.

Both batters are on the verge of getting to their 100s here and it will be the first time in the history of the tournament that both openers will get to the landmark in the same game. It is just a question who will get there first? Nothing CSK has done worked today

It is a strange decision from Gaikwad to give Mitchell his fourth over despite him looking ordinary. However, to be fair to Mitchell he did create an opportunity that Deshpande dropped on the boundary which went for a boundary. This score can be anything from here on for GT.

Vinayakk: Either side of a 25-ball half-century Shubman Gill hit a shot straight down the ground that couldn't have been any straighter without hitting the stumps at the non-striker's end. The second one was more modern, if you will. An opportune shot, a short ball from Simarjeet Singh and one he could have probably hit through midwicket with that signature short-arm jab of his. But somehow, he crossbatted it down the ground. Needs must. But it was the first one that you'd remember for a while. It was a perfectly alright length ball from Daryl Mitchell, the elbows were perfect from the right-handed opener, as he picked up the length so quickly. And the drive that followed was right out of any classic cricket playbook. It was the kind of shot that lived up to the cliche that the most technically gifted of cricketers, batting out of the textbook, do still have a place in this format. "A thing of beauty, you can see it time and time again. The balance was brilliant, effortless ease," said Nick Knight on air, adding any young batter would do well to learn just by watching that on loop.

It will be interesting to see how CSK will deal with the current situation. They have dropped their overseas fast bowling option in Gleeson for this game and now their attack is looking like they don't have the same penetration as they did in the last game with his extra pace.

This is turning into carnage here in Ahmedabad. Both batters are going after the bowling now and the run rate is over 10s now. No matter who is coming into the bowl both the batters are smacking it all around the ground. This is brutal hitting from GT openers.

Super Kings are struggling here at the moment. While Gaikwad is trying to go by the book things are not working out for them. They might need an out-of-box move or Titans batters to make a mistake to buy them a wicket. Whatever the score might be it needs an out-of-skin effort from CSK to get these.

Another excellent over for GT. Jadeja has been put to the sword today. Sudharsan slog swept one of the deliveries which went into the stands to bring up his half-century. This is a brutal assault from GT and CSK has to win this game or things might get tricky for them going forward. 

Daryl Mitchell has been brought into the attack and he bowled a good line and length and gave nothing away to the batters. Looks like instead of spin pacers who can bowl this way might be the ideal choice for today. 

Ravindra Jadeja has been brought into the attack and he gave away 14 runs in that first over. The wicket is looking excellent for batting and with the start Titans have got here they might be hoping to get around the 220-run mark today. 

Simirjeet has been brought into the attack to bowl the final over however, Shubman Gill played an excellent cross-batted shot over long-on for six. He is looking in terrific touch today is Shubman Gill. 

Vinayakk: Ruturaj Gaikwad's run at the toss has defied probability. It's a 50-50 chance when the toin goes up but the odds must have felt much heavier for the CSK captain who had won just ONE out of the 11 tosses this season. It led to CSK head coach Stephen Fleming joking that he needs a helping hand perhaps. "There has been a lot of talk about it. We are actually looking for someone to go out with him, we are really close to that point," Fleming – usually stoic – said with a hearty laugh. "Some of them (lost tosses) have been pretty crucial. Even his wife has had something to say about it. So, there is a lot of focus, and that will be one of his first main jobs." It dominated pre-match discussions too. At the pitch report, Chris Morris and Nick Knight ran a little routine on how he could win the toss. And in Ahmedabad, walking out by himself and without any additional help as Fleming quipped, Gaikwad finally got his second toss win. The CSK-heavy crowd roared and Gaikwad had a relieved look on his face.

This is turning out to be an excellent start for Titans. Both Sudharsan and Gill are looking in sublime form playing some crunching shots at the minute. CSK has been chopping and changing their bowlers but hasn't been able to get the breakthrough. 

Once again it was a good over from Shardul Thakur but almost. From time to time GT batters are taking that extra risk and getting the boundaries away. This is a good solid positive batting from the Titans here. Both Gill and Sudharsan have laid a solid foundation.

Tushar Deshpande took the ball from the other end and once again it was almost a good over until he gave away a boundary off the last ball. Shubman Gill seems to be in a bit of discomfort at this point physio came to have a check on him but at this point he is continuing to bat. 

Mitchell Santner has taken the new ball for the Super Kings. He bowled a decent over until Shubman Gill danced one down for one of the deliveries to smack it for a maximum. Right from the first over intensions of GT seem to be clear today.

While it is for Titans to qualify from here Chennai has it in their hands. It is the replay of the final from last year but both teams had contrasting fortunes this season. The surface usually here at Ahmedabad starts a bit slowly and gets better as the evening progresses. We have to see how it plays today.

"We thought Mustafizur was going to be here longer. The BCB pulled him a little bit earlier than we'd hoped, but we're covered for that. So that planning is in place. Some of the other injuries have been a little bit more problematic, but we're okay. We've got good resources to cover it and a good group of young players that are ready to go."

Would have bowled first as well, looks a good wicket. There's 1 percent chance of qualifying, so we are going to try hard for that. The mood is like any other match, we as a team believe in doing the best we can. Will be a good surface to bat on. Will score runs and try to restrict them. Wade comes in for Saha who has a niggle. In order to balance the team combination Kartik Tyagi comes in for Jos Little.

We will bowl first. Looks a good wicket to be honest. It's been a chasing ground, so we will look to chase. Pretty much similar to Chennai. We didn't like a red soild wicket much. Pretty relaxed. You tend to lose many games in IPL, you got to back everyone and make sure everyone is in a good head space. We had injuries in between, but happy. Rachin comes in for Gleeson.

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has made a scathing remark on Chennai Super Kings’ MS Dhoni for coming out to bat at No 9 during their match against Punjab Kings on Sunday.

MS Dhoni batted at No. 9 — for the first time – and Harshal Patel bowled him for a golden duck. In this season so far, MS Dhoni has amassed 110 across 7 innings at an average of average of 55 and a strike rate of 224.49.

A cursory look as an outsider would throw up bewilderment at why that phase was even considered a failure by Gill. “Yes, people would tell me, ‘Arre! You are just 22, already playing for India and in the IPL, aur kya chahiye? (What else do you want)’. But my mind was always fixated on those performances as I wasn’t just used to it all.

“It takes a lot of time to learn how to break that habit, especially when you have seen so much success, then you derive happiness only from that. There is no option… but that’s life.”

It's got a good covering of grass and it feels solid under the hand. I am looking at a high-scoring game. Two teams are going to come and push that 200-run mark. I can't see the pitch changing. There might be a little bit of swing early on. You got two bowlers on either side that can swing. Good outfield, I am looking at a high-scoring game, reads Chris Morris.

“It might happen that we will see CSK qualify for the playoffs from here on and they need to win 90 percent of their games,” said Pathan.

“As a proper senior guy, who’s in form, he needs to bat up the order. He can’t be doing the same thing that he has done on quite a few occasions.

“Yes, he made an impact against Mumbai, but here, when the team needed him, you can’t send Shardul Thakur ahead of yourself. You can’t see Dhoni batting at No.9.

“Sameer Rizvi was also padded up in the 15th over. They need to work out something; someone has to tell Dhoni, ‘Come on mate, bat for 4 overs’,” he added.

“MS Dhoni batting at No.9 doesn’t work for CSK, it’s doesn’t help the team’s cause. I know that he is 42, but he is in solid form,” Irfan Pathan told Star Sports.

“He should be taking the responsibility of batting up the order. He should bat for at least 4 to 5 overs.

“He is batting for the last over or last 2 overs and that doesn’t serve the purpose for CSK for a long term.”

"I think he's Shubman Gill enjoyed the captaincy. You know, it's something that takes time to really master, but I think he's enjoyed it this season and he's a world class player. So I have no doubt that in the next three games he's going to put in one or two really good performances."

Thirteen of the last 21 IPL games there have been won by the team batting second and that puts a fair bit of pressure on Ruturaj Gaikwad to change his luck with the toss.
