Following his return as Gurney Halleck in Dune: Part Two, Oscar nominee Josh Brolin finally opened up about his next high-profile movie in the form of New Line Cinema’s newest horror thriller Weapons. The project hails from actor-turned-filmmaker Zach Cregger, who gained recognition for his 2022 feature directorial debut Barbarian.

During a recent interview with Collider, Brolin expressed his excitement about the Weapons movie, revealing that getting to know more about Cregger’s vision for the film makes his decision of joining the cast "better and better" every day. He also shared that he’s looking forward to sharing the screen once again with Alden Ehrenreich, who he previously starred opposite in the Coen Brothers’ 2016 period comedy Hail Caesar! "I really liked his first movie, but it’s still new for him and all that," Brolin said. "Then I met him a couple of times, and we talked through what he was thinking. It’s a really good script, first of all. He’s put together a really good cast, especially now - Julia Garner, who I love, and Alden, who’s great, who I did Hail, Caesar! with. There’s a lot of really good people involved."

In addition, Brolin also teased Cregger’s "brilliant" script for Weapons, while also confirming that production on the horror movie will officially begin sometime this May until July. “This was one of the few times when I finally went, 'Okay, let’s do this.’ — and I think I was avoiding work anyway, just generally — when I said, 'Yes, let’s do this,' my choice just felt better and better and better and better with each following day,” He continued. “I’m super excited about doing this. We are doing it in May, June, July, and I just talked with him yesterday. I’m serious when I say I think it’s a really brilliant design of a script. Brilliant."

Cregger will be directing and producing Weapons from a screenplay he wrote. At the moment, further details about the project’s plot and characters remain a secret, but it is being described as "an interrelated, multistory horror epic." The film is also reportedly being likened to Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1999 movie Magnolia. Leading the cast are Brolin, Ehrenreich, Julia Garner, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, Austin Abrams, June Diane Raphael and Cary Christopher. This won’t be Brolin’s latest venture into the horror genre, as he has already appeared in films like Mimic, Hollow Man, and Planet Terror.

Josh Brolin’s MCU Future

Besides his starring role in Weapons, fans are also looking forward to his potential return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as either Thanos or Cable. When asked about his rumored appearance in Deadpool and Wolverine, Brolin initially kept on giving vague responses potentially teasing his involvement. However, last May 2, the acclaimed actor seemingly confirmed that he won’t be reprising Cable in the third movie, contrary to speculations. "Yeeeeesssss! I so wanted to be in that movie." he said. "[Marvel] is a more complex labyrinth than Outer Range will ever be, my friend. And I will never know where that went or what that is or what I’m involved with or what I’m not involved with —the MCU being involved now. Cable was a lot of fun. I really liked doing that role. That was a lot of fun."

Weapons is slated to arrive in theaters on Jan. 16, 2026.
