More Bounce To the Ounce deserves it's own spot at the top.
That sound of the tape loop drums was so innovative it changed music forever and gave us Atomic Dog/Loopzilla.
Man that's hard. I'll list a couple that come to mind.
Magic Mind- Earth, Wind and Fire
Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication- Parliament
Glasshouse- The Temptations
Frisky (alternate mix preferred)- Sly and the Family Stone
Wondering Who- The Jacksons
Higher Ground- Stevie Wonder
I Wanna Be Your Lover- Prince
Palm Grease- Herbie Hancock
Many, many more...
This guy FUNKS ^
amazing picks - i think spank a lee by herbie is also outrageously funky
Rufus - Tell Me Something Good
superstition just easily knocks out everything imo. i didnt even know funk could get that funky
The entire Innervisions album could probably make top 10 tbh.
Just a few of mine:
Mandrill - Fence Walk,
Sly & The Family Stone - Of You Want Me To Stay
E, W & F - Mighty, Mighty
Stevie - Toss up between Maybe Your Baby and All Day Sucker
Parliament - Night Of The Thumpasorus People
Graham Central Station - The Jam
Funkadelic - One Nation Under A Groove or Let's Take It To The Stage
Damn this is hard but here goes:
Heart’s Desire - Don Blackman
Right On For The Darkness - Curtis Mayfield
See And Don’t See - Marie Queenie Lyons
The Payback - James Brown
Evolution - Magnum
Living For The City - Stevie Wonder
Evil Vibrations - Mighty Ryeders
Wajang Woman - Embryo
Hot Pants Road - The JBs
Hard Times - Baby Huey
Money’s Funny - Cecil Lyde
Funky Nassau Pt.1 - Beginning of the End
Haboglabotribin’ - Bernard Wright
Hihache - Lafayette Afro Rock Band
Freeway - Eric Dunbar
Freedom Road - The Pharaohs
L.A 26000 - Damn Sam The Miracle Man
Apache - Incredible Bongo Band
Footsteps In The Dark Pts 1&2 - Isley Brothers
You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks - Funkadelic
Well here’s 20! But I feel like if I look at this tomorrow the list will be entirely different 🤣.
Surely the willie wright cover og right on for the darknesss....?
Love your selection
Ooh while I do love the Willie Wright version I think I prefer the Mayfield OG!
Atomic Dog - George Clinton
The Grunt - The J.B.'s
More Bounce to the Ounce - Zapp
Below the Funk (Pass the J) - Rick James
Funkin For Jamaica - Tom Browne
Higher Than High - Undisputed Truth
Party Up In Here - Brides of Funkenstein
Wanna Be Starting Something - Michael Jackson
Ball of Confusion - Temptations
Earthquake - Graham Central Station
No More Okey Doke - The Meters
Jungle Jazz - Kool and the Gang
Love Spell - Fatback Band
Holy Ghost - The Bar Kays
My Name is Mud - Primus
My Prerogative - Bobby Brown
Genius of Love - Tom Tom Club
Fopp - Ohio Players
Serpentine Fire - Earth Wind & Fire
Get Up, Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose - Teddy Pendergrass
Funk ballad - I’d Rather Be With You - P Funk
Disco Inferno and Funky Town both knock me out cold after the amount of sheer burning dancing they cause
Disco is my favorite!
"Cold Sweat" by James Brown deserves a spot on any listing like that. Funky as hell, and surely pointed the way for all the great tracks that came later.
Good choices in both threads.
Thank you!
Thank You for Talkin' to Me Africa by Sly and the Family Stone
Temptations - Papa Was A Rolling Stone
Isaac Hayes - Walk On By
Isley Brothers - Who's That Lady
Curtis Mayfield - Pusherman
Best soul group!
So much good old school funk in this thread. If like to nominate a little new school to the mix:
Them Changes - Thundercat
To me it felt so old school I would have swore it was.
Handa Wanda - the wild magnolias
One of the first tunes on my funk odyssey...Cheek to Cheek by the Kay Gees!
James Brown - SOUL POWER
The bassline that launched a thousand rockets
Herbie Hancock - Watermelon Man
Cosmic Slop - Parliament Funkadelic
A couple personal favorites are Holy Ghost by The Bar Kay’s, Stomp! by The Brothers Johnson, Slippin’ Into Darkness by War and Poppa Was a Rolling Stone by The Temptations which my opinion has one of the greatest continuous bass lines throughout any funk/soul song ever.
