India At Cannes 2024: Bharat Pavillion Inaugurated

India is all set to make a memorable mark at the 77th Cannes Film Festival that opened May 14. India has several films set to be screened under prestigious sections at Cannes Film Festival 2024 - Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light will vie for Palme d’Or while British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri's Santosh will be screened in Un Certain Regard. Chidanand S Naik’s Sunflowers Were First Ones To Know and Mansi Maheshwari’s Bunnyhood will compete in the La Cinef section.

National Award-winning cinematographer Santosh Sivan will receive the prestigious Pierre Angenieux tribute at the festival. He will also be the first Indian to deliver a masterclass for Cannes delegates.

Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Sanjay Jaju and Ambassador of India to France Jawed Ashraf inaugurated Bharat Pavillion on May 15. Chairperson of National Film and Video Foundation (South Africa) Tholoana Rose Ncheke, Director of Films Department Christian Jeune, and filmmaker Richie Mehta, among many others, also attended the inauguration. Bharat Pavilion is being organized by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) in collaboration with industry partner, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry at Cannes Film Festival 2024 at 108 village International Riviera.

The first glimpse of the Taiwanese action-comedy The Demon Hunter was unveiled at the Bharat Pavilion on Wednesday.

During the inauguration, Jaju said it was heartening to see Indian projects in the Cannes official selection - one each in the competition and in uncertain regard - adding that both projects have been backed by the Indian government.

The Bharat Pavilion at Cannes aims at being the platform for the Indian film community to foster production collaborations, attend curated knowledge sessions, sign distribution deals, greenlight scripts, hold B2B meetings and network with prominent entertainment and media players from around the world. The pavilion has been designed by the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad is christened on The Sutradhara for depicting this year’s theme of “Create in India”. A Bharat Stall has also been put up in the Marche du Cannes through the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

India will host Bharat Parv (Festival of India) for the first time at the ongoing film festival. The official poster and trailer of the 55th India International Film Festival (in Goa, India) in November 2024 will be unveiled on Thursday. The dates for the first World Audio-Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) to be hosted alongside the 55th IFFI will also be revealed the same day.

On the second day of Cannes Film Festival 2024, India hosted the session Abundant Incentives and Seamless Facilitations - Come, Create in India at Marche du Cannes to promote its role in the global film industry, and highlight India's enticing incentives & facilitation process for co-productions.

Official selections

Apart from All We Imagine As Light, Sunflowers Were The First Ones To Know.. and Santosh, Karan Kandhari's Sister Midnight will be screened in Directors' Fortnight while Maisam Ali's In Retreat will feature in L’Acid.

Director of Sunflowers Were The First Ones To Know, Naik, is an Indian film student at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). Bunnyhood filmmaker Maheshwari is a graduate from the National Film and Television School, United Kingdom has also been selected in La Cinef category.

Paulomi Basu and C J Clarke’s Maya: The Birth of a Superhero has also been selected for the Best Immersive Work prize. Pranab J Deka’s Hindi film Kooki will also be screened at the festival.

Manoj Annadurai’s Tamil-English film Iruvam will be screened under Lets Spook Cannes at Cannes Film Festival 2024.

ShyamBenegal's Manthan will also be screened in the Classics section at the Cannes Film Festival 2024. NFDC-National Film Archive of India preserved the film that was recently restored by the Film Heritage Foundation.

Films at Bharat Pavillion

The trailer of Indo-US co-production Paro - The Untold Story of Slavery will be unveiled at the Bharat Pavilion during Cannes Film Festival 2024 and it will also be part of the Cannes Market. Directed by Gajendra Ahire, the film features Taha Shah Badussha (Heeramandi, Netflix Netflix ), Trupti Bhoir (Touring Talkies) and Govind Namdeo. The film sheds light on the grim reality of bride slavery system, human trafficking and injustice.

Indians walking the red carpet

Indian stars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Aditi Rao Hydari will return to Cannes red carpet for L'Oréal Paris, the official Makeup Partner of the Festival de Cannes. Actors Kiara Advani, Shohita Dhulipala, Jacqueline Fernandez, Urvashi Rautela, and Deepti Sadhwani will also be seen on the red carpet.

RJ Karishma Gangwal, social media influencer Ankush Bahuguna, finance content creator Sharan B Hegde will also walk the Cannes red carpet this year. Indian entrepreneur Namita Thapar, content creators Niharika NM and Aastha Shah, Viraj Gehlani, chef and social media star Sanjyot Keer, and fashion influencer Nancy Tyagi will also walk the Cannes red carpet this year.
