Ah yes Emily was so supportive yelling at Lorelai while she was in labor, or calling her toddler "Big head" often enough to have a complex. Wanting her 16 year old daughter to get married is great decision making skills and let's not forget holding money over your kid's head. Sorry, if you think she was supportive, you're either trolling or don't understand the definition of the word

Emily wasn’t the perfect mother by a long shot but she had character development, something her daughter really lacked. The money thing was two-sided because Lorelai accepted it and all she wanted in exchange was dinner one night a week.

i mean of course lorelai accepted emily’s money … she was a child?? what kind of argument is this lmao.

and on the subject of the money lorelai needed for rory’s tuition fee in season 1, it was a hard ask for her, and we can understand why. she had a tortured relationship with emily, and becomes progressively obvious why as the series continues. “there’s always strings, pinocchio.” literally.

oh and to say lorelai had no character development? have you even watched the show

Emily came from old money and her teenage daughter was pregnant. Having a child is a lifelong commitment, too, let’s not forget that part😂

Emily did not always support Lorelai. For one glaring example, she attempted to sabotage Lorelai’s relationship with Luke by getting Chris involved, simply because Chris was checks notes “well-bred”.

Granted, Lorelai contributed to the chaos in that situation, by lying to Luke and refusing to give him space and time. But it demonstrated that Emily couldn’t respect Lorelai’s decision, even if it was effectively the best one for her. Emily preferred she marry someone who was never there for Lorelai, nor their daughter, than someone who truly loved and cared for them.

The old-money aspect to Emily was disgusting, but Lorelai didn’t care about it when it stood to benefit her so for the sake of the discussion I didn’t include it. The way she treated her employees, and the Christopher thing was wild but also not unheard of, and it’s not like Lorelai couldn’t stand Christopher, she kept going back all on her own.

Emily wanted her daughter to be well taken care of because that’s all she knew. Look at her and Richard’s dynamic. That’s not her fault, it’s how she was raised. She still defended Lorelai, protected her, and cared for her even when she was acting like a spoiled brat well into her 30s.

she’s hardly the worst character. she’s flawed and i’ll totally admit that. she had plenty of selfish moments through the series, but to say she didn’t deserve her own boyfriend and also referring to her as the “queen of self-sabotage” is just plain wrong and rude. she’s human and actually an extremely supportive and diligent, hardworking, driven character. we should be careful not to project fantasy-like expectations onto characters, especially characters that are meant to be depicted as flawed and realistic.

what confuses me even more is the fawning over emily while simultaneously hating lorelai. it’s quite strange. they’re actually very alike, and i sincerely believe emily is far more flawed than lorelai is, so i don’t quite understand what you mean. yes emily didn’t sugarcoat, but she did try, persistently, to assume direct control over lorelai’s life, dictate her decisions, and was oftentimes unnecessarily rude to her.

i love lorelai and emily both as characters, and i won’t shrink from saying that they’re flawed, but it seems like an inane exaggeration to grant lorelai the position of “worst character” of the series when there’s very clear and obvious contenders that would (and should) knock lorelai right out of your “characters to hate” list, like asher fleming, marty, dean, christopher. you know, the actual assholes.

I agree with you about clocking in the worker. Someone could’ve been fired for that! I always found that so gross.

Lorelai's always been the worst of the main characters for me too. She's fun and witty, but she is so goddamn childish. She's (understandably) emotionally stunted at 16, parentifies Rory, and makes hating her parents a main personality trait, which is shocking to continue doing into your 30s. I know a couple of people who remind me of Lorelai irl, and I can only stand them in small doses. People like this are exhausting, and Lorelai is no exception. I commend how much patience her parents have for her, especially Richard, who's less vocal about his qualms with her. Personally, I've always been more sympathetic towards him and Emily when it comes to their issues, although I acknowledge the parts they play in their bad family dynamic.

Couldn’t agree more. I feel like the more mature you are the more you understand Emily and Richard and the less you can tolerate Lorelai lmao
