Details

Dr Natalie Hyacinth, a researcher and Research Manager at Goldsmiths, University of London, will present her work on the history of Black British music, focusing on 'The Sound of Lewisham', a project mapping sound systems in London's Lewisham borough. This research, part of the ERC-funded Sonic Street Technologies initiative, sheds light on the role of sound systems in shaping the Caribbean community's social and political consciousness. In collaboration with Professors Les Back and William ‘Lez’ Henry, Hyacinth's work covers decades of the local music scene, emphasizing themes of migration and cultural resilience. Hyacinth will discuss her findings at the 'Distant Islands, Spectral Cities' event in Paris on May 30, 2024, organized by the Banister Fletcher Global Fellowship programme. This programme, curated by Olivier Marboeuf, aims to explore themes of survival and cultural heritage through sound-system cartography. The event, hosted at the University of London Institute in Paris, will be conducted in English, followed by a reception. For more information on the programme, visit the dedicated webpage. Admission is free for all attendees.
