'What I did for love' backstory/controversy questions

I heard a rumor that marvin hamlisch or michael bennet or someone didn't want to write or include 'what i did for love' into a chorus line because they felt it was too poppy/commercial. i've heard this for years. what is the truth? does anyone have articles/interviews confirming this?
