RR became the second team to qualify for IPL 2024 playoff after DC's win over LSG

With six more matches to go, three teams are officially out of the IPL 2024 playoff race while two have sealed theirs in the top 4, bringing down the equation to 2 spots up for grabs and 5 teams fighting for it. Here’s a look at the possible IPL 2024 playoff qualification scenarios and what the teams have to do:

Lucknow Super Giants’ defeat to Delhi Capitals yesterday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium not only had the visitors’ chance of IPL 2024 playoff qualification go up in the air, but it ensured Rajasthan Royals became the second team after Kolkata Knight Riders to seal a playoff spot.

 IPL 2024 Playoff Qualification Scenarios

Kolkata Knight Riders [Q]- KKR have qualified and are at the top of the IPL 2024 points table with 19 points.

Remaining matches

  • RR vs KKR

KKR will now finish the IPL league stages either as the table-toppers or second-placed team thus ensuring their place in Qualifier 1 at Chennai. This will mean KKR will have two chances to make the final. If they lose in Qualifier 1, they will move to Qualifier 2 and await the winner of the Eliminator to have one more spot in the final. Their final league game is against Rajasthan Royals and that game could decide who finishes the league stages at the top of the table.

Rajasthan Royals [Q]- RR are currently placed second in the points table with 16 points.

Remaining matches

  • RR vs PBKS
  • RR vs KKR

Rajasthan Royals will breathe a sigh of relief after they were assured of a playoff spot with Lucknow Super Giants losing to Delhi Capitals yesterday. Apart from KKR, who are already ahead of RR on points, SRH can finish above RR, and CSK and LSG had the opportunity to go level on points with RR. But, LSG’s loss has meant only CSK and SRH can push RR down the points table and RR cannot finish below 4th. With two more games remaining, RR’s focus will shift to ensure a top-two finish to seal their spot in Qualifier 1.

Chennai Super Kings – CSK are currently placed third in the points table with 14 points

Remaining matches

  • RCB vs CSK

The LSG loss has made the equation clearer for CSK. Win against RCB and confirm a playoff spot. If CSK manage a win over RCB on Saturday, SRH is the only team that can push CSK down the points table and CSK cannot go below the 4th place if they have 16 points in their kitty. However, a loss to RCB will make things tricky for CSK. They will remain on 14 points and if their margin of defeat is more than 18 runs (if RCB bat first and score 200 runs) then RCB will leapfrog CSK in the points table. In that case, CSK will hope SRH to lose their remaining two games and both CSK and RCB will be through to the playoff.

Sunrisers Hyderabad – SRH are currently placed fourth in the IPL 2024 points table with 14 points.

Remaining matches

  • SRH vs GT
  • SRH vs PBKS

SRH have two games in hand and need one win to seal the third playoff spot. If they manage to win both their games, they have the chance to finish in the top-two provided RR lose both their game or lose at least one. But that is not something SRH will be focussing right now. If SRH lose both their remaining games, and CSK beat RCB or vice-versa, SRH will be vulnerable and the final playoff spot could very be decided on Net Run Rate. Even though SRH’s NRR are is far better than their closest competitors’ the Pat Cummins-led side would not want to go down that path.

Delhi Capitals: DC are currently placed fifth in the IPL 2024 points table with 14 points.

Remaining matches

  • DC vs LSG

Delhi Capitals’ league stage is done and dusted and they finish on 14 points in 14 matches – losing 7 and winning 7. They currently find themselves in the 5th place, in touching distance of the playoff, but they cannot do anything now, other than hope for other results to go their way. They can only hope for RCB to lose to CSK, so that RCB do not go above them and then hope SRH to lose both their games by big margins that it pushes their NRR below DC’s. While the first scenario is still possible, the second is highly unlikely – meaning DC’s IPL 2024 campaign is as good as over even though they are still alive mathematically.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru – RCB are currently in sixth position in the points table with 12 points.

Remaining matches

  • RCB vs CSK

With their fifth win on the trot, RCB are making a late push for a playoff spot and it now boils down to their final league game against CSK – who are also fighting for the playoff spot. A loss will bring curtains to RCB campaign, and a win will keep with a spot in the playoffs. But for that, RCB would need to beat CSK by more than 18 runs (if they score 200) to get their NRR over CSK’s. SRH could still surpass RCB, but If SRH lose their remaining games and do not go beyond 14 points and if RCB beat CSK by the said margin, both RCB and CSK can go through to the top 4.

Lucknow Super Giants – LSG are currently placed seventh in the IPL 2024 points table with 12 points.

Remaining matches

  • MI vs LSG

LSG let go of a golden opportunity to keep themselves in the thick of the action of IPL playoff race as their 19-run loss to Delhi Capitals have ensured that they would not be able to touch the playoff qualification benchmark of 16 points. With one game remaining, they can hope to get to 14 points, putting them level on points with the fifth-placed DC. But, due to LSG’s poor NRR it is highly unlikely that they will be able to surpass DC or RCB, CSK, and SRH – all of whom could also end upon 14 points, LSG’s campaign, similar to DC’s, is as good as over even if they are alive mathematically.

Gujarat Titans – GT are currently placed 8th in the points table with 11 points.

Remaining matches

  • SRH vs GT

After splitting points in Ahmedabad with KKR due to the abandoned game, GT officially are out of the IPL 2024 playoff race. With one more game to go, GT can get to 13 points only and the 4th placed team currently has 14 points, so mathematically GT cannot finish in the top 4. However, they can spoil SRH’s bid to the playoff by beating them in their final match of IPL 2024.

Mumbai Indians – MI are currently placed at the 9th spot in the points table with 8 points.

Remaining matches

  • MI vs LSG

Mumbai Indians officially become the first team to be eliminated from the IPL 2024 playoff race, and they will look to avoid the wooden spoon this year.

Punjab Kings – PBKS are currently 10th in the points table with 8 points.

Remaining matches

  • RR vs PBKS
  • SRH vs PBKS

PBKS became the second team to be eliminated from the playoff race, and with two games remaining, they will hope to avoid the wooden spoon this year.
