The Fall Guy—Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s action romance—is making a quick debut on digital streaming.
Released in theaters May 3 by Universal Pictures, The Fall Guy—based on the hit Lee Majors series on ABC in the 1980s—fell flat with a $27.7 million opening at the domestic box office.
To date, the film has earned $63 million domestically and $64.5 million in international theaters for a worldwide gross of $127.5 million. Per Variety, the film had a $140 million production budget before prints and advertising.
Universal announced in a post on X Monday morning that it will release The Fall Guy on digital video Tuesday. The post notes that viewers who purchase the film will get an extended edition of the film, which adds 20 minutes to the action.
The film is expected to be available on such digital streaming on such platforms as VUDU and AppleTV+ and Prime Video, with the latter platform listing the movie for a Tuesday release with a pre-order price of $24.99. Generally, pre-orders reflect the purchase price on digital, so the film should be available for rent on premium video on demand for $19.99 for a 48-hour period once viewers start watching the movie.
What Is ‘The Fall Guy’ About?
Ryan Gosling stars in The Fall Guy as Colt Seavers, a veteran stuntman for A-list action movie star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Also a regular on Tom’s sets is Colt’s girlfriend, Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt), a camera operator who is often hired by the star’s producer, Gail Meyer (Hannah Waddingham).
Colt’s perfect world is shattered in an instant, though, when a stunt goes horribly wrong and he breaks his back, which ultimately causes him to walk away from the movie business and his relationship with Jody without warning.
However, when Colt gets a call from Gail about Jody directing Tom in a new sci-fi action movie in Australia, the former stuntman leaves his job as a Hollywood valet to get back into the game and try to make amends with Jody. When Colt arrives on set, though, he discovers Gail needs him to find Tom, who has gone missing after falling in with the wrong crowd of people.
Directed by former stuntman David Leitch, The Fall Guy got a warm reception from Rotten Tomatoes critics, earning a “fresh” 82 percent rating based on 319 reviews. Moviegoers liked The Fall Guy even more, giving it a positive 87% Audience Score based on 1,000-plus verified ratings.
The Fall Guy marks the second time in as many months that Universal has fast-tracked a theatrical title to PVOD. The studio also released the horror thriller Abigail on April 19, and it made its digital streaming debut three weeks later.
