THE world-famous village of Saltaire will be used as a backdrop for a new film. 

Residents of the UNESCO World Heritage Site received a letter informing them of upcoming filming.

Beginning at the end of May, the cameras will start to roll for The Choral, written by legendary playwright Alan Bennett. 

The film will reportedly star Ralph Fiennes, Jim Broadbent, and Simon Russell Beale and be directed by Nicholas Hytner (The History Boys; The Lady in the Van, The Crucible, The Madness of King George).

A synopsis on IMDB says: "A choral society's male members enlist in World War I, leaving the demanding Dr. Guthrie (Fiennes) to recruit teenagers.

"Together, they experience the joy of singing while the young boys grapple with their impending conscription into the army."

The letter, from Gerontius Productions, says: "We are excited to announce that we have chosen the scenic backdrop of Saltaire fir the filming of an exciting new film The Choral written by Alan Bennett. 

"The story is centered around a choral group during World War I, as all the men leave for war and the effects this has on the local community."

The letter adds: "We are excited to come to the beautiful Saltaire to film and hope that our presence will not be too disruptive and will be itself an attraction to the community.

"Filming on location would not be possible without the understanding and goodwill of local residents and so we would like to extend our thanks in advance."

This marks the latest in a long line of productions filmed in Saltaire, with the village's famous streets providing the perfect backdrop for period dramas.
