Dear Centennial High School Community,

Another busy week at Centennial is in the books.  Our last edition of The Centennial Crier hit newsstands, and students were engaged in Skills Alberta, Badminton, Track & Field, Field Hockey, Rugby, and Soccer.  Beyond that, we had our Grad Rehearsal yesterday (more on Grad below), and our outstanding Final Music Concert of the year took place last night.  Additionally, this week was Mental Health Awareness Week, and also Teacher Appreciation Week.

Please read below for a number of updates as we head into a beautiful weekend.

Grad Gown Pick-up

  • If any students missed the Grad Rehearsal yesterday and as such did not pick up their Grad gown, v-stole, and cap, they can do so Monday
  • Students will go to the Rundle Conference Room (upstairs by the treadmills) on Monday, May 13 at lunch to pick these items up

Grad Legacy Gifts

  • Each year a committee made up of graduating students determines what they would like to leave behind as a legacy gift to and/or on behalf of their graduating class
  • In addition to donating money to both a local and international charity, the Grad Legacy Committee surveyed the Class of 2024 and decided to invest in our washroom facilities as part of their gift
  • As a result, dividers are being installed between urinals in the boys washrooms, and feminine product dispensers will be installed in the girls washrooms
  • We are counting on our students to value and appreciate this gift from their departing peers, by not damaging these new installations that provide privacy, health and safety upgrades to our school
  • Thank you Grad Legacy Committee for all your thoughtfulness!

Skills Alberta

  • This week 3 Centennial students, coached by 3 staff members, competed in the Provincial Skills competition in Edmonton
  • Sarah C. and Eliana H. competed in Junior Hairstyling, while Minori S. competed in Fashion Technology
  • These students represented Centennial brilliantly and did us proud
  • Thank you to Ms. Kilby, Ms. Kalala, and Ms. Parmiter for supporting these outstanding students at Skills!

Badminton Champ!

  • Nevan G. won Gold in Singles at the Provincial Badminton championships last weekend
  • Congratulations Nevan!

Youth Resilience & Mental Health

  • As mentioned above, this week is Mental Health Awareness Week
  • The Summit Centre for Youth Resilience is offering a parent education evening to help parents navigate children’s mental health (this is a free, in-person event)
  • Topics include early warning signs your child may be struggling with mental health, and when to seek help, common questions parents have about accessing mental health and addiction supports for their child, what to expect when calling Access Mental Health and how centralized mental health intakes work, and different programs and community resources that Access Mental Health can help with
  • Date: Wednesday, May 22, 6:30 – 8:00pm
  • Location: The Summit – Marian & Jim Sinneave Centre for Youth Resilience (1015 – 17 St NW)
  • Please email CES@ahs.ca to register

Teacher Appreciation Week

Also as mentioned above, this week was Teacher Appreciation Week.  I see firsthand, each day, the heart and dedication that Centennial teachers and support staff put into their work with your children.  If you have a moment this weekend or any time down the road, I encourage you to email a teacher or support staff member (at Centennial, or elsewhere) who has positively impacted your child.  Your appreciation and support means a great deal.

Wishing you and yours a fantastic weekend.  I cannot wait for May 17, as we celebrate The Class of 2024 – I will see many of you then!

Sincerely,

Joe Sturgeon - Principal
