Marcus Rashford sent the Manchester United fanbase into meltdown on Thursday with a message to Bruno Fernandes that appeared to many to be a goodbye. Fernandes has been linked with a United exit ahead of the summer transfer window following a disastrous second season under Erik ten Hag.
Rashford returned from a spell on the sidelines as a second-half substitute in Wednesday's 3-2 win against Newcastle United at Old Trafford.
In doing so, the academy graduate made his 400th appearance for the club, eight years after bursting onto the scene as an emergency Anthony Martial replacement against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League.
Rashford has scored 131 goals for United - five away from entering the club's top 10 goalscorers - and has registered a further 64 assists.
Plenty of his contributions in recent years have involved Fernandes, who, alongside Rashford, has been a crucial attacking force since arriving from Sporting Lisbon in 2020.
But with United at serious risk of missing out on European football entirely next season with a record-low Premier League finish, speculation is swirling about Fernandes' future beyond the summer.
And Rashford added fuel to the fire by responding to a message on social media with what many supporters viewed as a goodbye to the Portuguese midfield maestro.

The United took to Instagram to commemorate his latest landmark for his boyhood side, writing: "It's a special feeling to say that I have played 400 times for United [love heart emoji]. Thank you."
Fernandes was among Rashford's team-mates to comment on the post, penning: "400 more to come [praise emoji]."
The Red Devils forward only responded to his captain's message publicly, sparking panic by saying: "It's been a pleasure sharing the pitch with you bro [love heart emoji]."
Fernandes' message makes it seem like Rashford isn't planning to leave the club this summer despite a woeful season in which he's scored just eight times after a career-best 30-goal 2022/23 campaign.
