Draymond Green is once again shaping national sports discourse because of something he said on his podcast. This time, his sights were set on the New York Knicks.

The Warriors forward declared on his eponymous show published Thursday that the Eastern Conference squad’s playoff run is nothing more than a lucky break, and if New York were to run it back with this current core roster, the organization would be setting itself up for failure. After dispatching the Philadelphia 76ers in six games in the first round, the Knicks currently lead their second-round series against the Pacers 2-0.

“In the Eastern Conference, you can get to the conference finals — a la the Atlanta Hawks — with, like, playing very ‘mid’ teams, so that’s kind of what y’all are doing right now,” the Warriors forward said to his Knicks fan guest. “And I think what this is setting up for — y’all up for is what happened to the Atlanta Hawks three years ago when they made the conference finals, and they never got back.”

Since reaching the Eastern Conference finals in 2021, the Hawks’ postseason campaigns have included two first-round exits, and loss in the play-in tournament. Green brought up another relevant case that his Warriors often took on during their heyday in the playoffs: the Portland Trail Blazers. Though they made the conference finals in 2019, the Blazers got swept by the Dubs and never made it past the first round over the next two seasons. They’re currently in a rebuilding stage, and haven’t won more than 33 games in three seasons. When Green brought this back to New York, he fired off a pretty hot take.

“It’ll probably be another 15 years of misery and we’ll all sit around and laugh at Knicks fans with their delusion about because that’s just what happens,” Green declared.

Naturally, this take did not remain in the confines of Green’s podcast audience for long. It quickly made its way to Knicks fans on social media, and then circulated enough to become a topic on ESPN’s “First Take” — the second time that’s happened this week. The Golden State forward’s commentary got its own chyron, and a response from Kendrick Perkins.

“That’s a lazy-ass take by Draymond Green, let me say that first and foremost,” Perkins said, and went on to argue, “ ... Why call it a fluke when looking at a team that was built the right way?”

The ESPN analyst later added, “Now, all of a sudden, you look at it, what they’re doing right now, without their other All-Star in Julius Randle, and they’re making waves, and they’ll only going to continue to get better,” before praising the Knicks’ financial flexibility.

It wasn’t all shots at the blue and orange on his podcast. Green declared that point guard Jalen Brunson “made everybody look like idiots” by playing up to, and beyond, his $104 million contract. Of course, when a viewer asked in a mailbag question if Brunson has become the best point guard in the NBA, Green gave a resounding “F—k no,” adding that his teammate, Steph Curry, was still in the league.

At this rate, expect a chyron of that quote later in the day on ESPN.
