Frank Burns and Hot Lips Houlihan were still partners in crime, but their crimes were never the same again. The arrival of Col. Potter led to Frank Burns’ complete disintegration as a character. The Catalburun, also known as the Turkish Pointer, shares an unusual trait with the Pachón Navarro and Andean Tiger-hound. He was portrayed by Robert Duvall in the 1970 film and by Larry Linville through the first five seasons of the TV series. In the original novel, Frank was a Captain and brash, arrogant, and self-exalting third-rate surgeon. I fully believe that Frank’s story to Hawkeye and B.J. was contrived. As we saw in “The Novacaine Mutiny”, the self-exalting Frank was not above spinning things to make himself look good.. I wouldn’t have put it past him to try it again here; I think Hawkeye and B.J. should have known better than to believe him so readily..
I know Frank has been know to exgarate stories before and like some said he could have been making it up. BUT the way Hawkeye tossed the phone away, tells me he was telling the truth. Who better to know Burn was lying better than Hawkeye, even over a phone Hawkeye should have been able to know if he was lying or not. So I think he was telling the truth, that’s my opinion anyway.
Frank should’ve known that Hawkeye & BJ would be so sore at him after saying on the phone that charges against him are dismissed, that he’s being assigned to a Veterans’ Hospital in his home state of Indiana and promoted to Lt. Colonel. Frank’s wife must’ve been so happy when he told her he’s returning home.
Personally I never liked frank at all. He was a racist or atleast made hard stereotypes out of anyone who wasn’t a straight white American. He was a coward for someone who always liked to boast about being in the army and being in the front. As much as he tried to get Hawkeye arrested for insubordination, as soon as something hits the wall, it’s every man for himself. As much as he likes Margret, its very clear he just wants her for fun and no commitment. He’s an overall jerk to anyone lower in rank, A terrible doctor, and I’m not just saying this because it’s clear he’s all of this and more. Literally a character to hate. But I suppose it was very satisfying to see Hawkeye, PJ, or Trapper getting the best of him.
I’ve always wondered if what Frank said is true, given he was shown to be a compulsive liar, a kiss ass and a show off with what materialistic items he had IE 2 houses and $35,000 car, so I’m guessing with his phone call he decided to brag a little and lie saying he’s been cleared and been promoted stateside, or I personally believe that he’s still a section 8, he’s not recovered a single bit, he’s being held in a psychiatric hospital and is being granted a phone call, has no idea where he is and his mind is filling in the gaps, he’s not in trouble in fact he’s being rewarded. But given Hawkeyes and BJs reactions I’m guessing what he’s said must be true, maybe he’s been cleared of the charges given his mental breakdown but I doubt he’s been promoted as his record would show a number of screw ups, a lot of nots from both Blake and Potter that would have him held back for a considerable number of years if not indefinitely, hell I’d say the only reason he wasn’t kicked out of the army is they believed he was at least a competent enough surgeon.
