Need confirmation for something I heard at my DEP meeting

Hey friends.

Earlier today at my DEP meeting, the other future sailors were asking about cell phones and having them and such. Our Petty Officer reiterated that we'll keep our phones, but only use them to call on the phone call weekend.

However, the Chief chimed in with the "keeping the cell phone" thing is only in an experimental phase, and only certain divisions will get to keep their phones.

Can anyone who has recently graduated from basic give us a confirmation?

TIA

Can confirm it is still a pilot program. Which means they're testing it out. The intention of the cellphone usage is to get rid of the payphone booths that they were previously using. It is not meant for recruits to be able to scroll through their phones.

Maybe that will change in the future? But for now, it is just intended to be used to call home during allowed times.

Were the recruit's phones locked up somewhere, or did they have them, and told to turn them off?

We had to put them in boxes and they were returned the day of graduation.

I was told at my DEP meeting that the put your phone in a box and they pass them out a few times during RTC. If I remember correctly, he said the new program allows 4 phone calls. It is also now listed on the timeline for RTC that you can find online.

You will be keeping your phone. The pilot started last November and they are now doing it for all classes. https://www.military.com/daily-news/2024/03/29/navy-allows-boot-camp-recruits-use-personal-cell-phones-make-calls-family-home.html
