12 best mind-bending series on Netflix with an IMDb rating of 7 and above

Netflix isn’t stranger to blowing people’s minds when it comes to its original shows, and the same holds true for the OTT platform’s mind-bending series, a genre which has taken the world by storm after the likes of Black Mirror, Dark, and now 3 Body Problem. But what’s the magic formula for these best mind-bending series? Is it the grim but fascinating post-apocalyptic locations, the ever-boggling non-linear time loops, or the dark secrets that its protagonists are always guarding?

These titles dwell on a myriad of genres — from sci-fi and drama to thriller — and make for some exciting binge-watching sessions. Outstanding Netflix shows like Black Mirror (2011-) and Sense8 (2019-2022) have not only captured the audience but have also received critical praise that is reflected in their high IMDb ratings.

Some underlying themes in these mind-bending series

Grey characters and a non-linear structure of storytelling are the two most common themes in mind-bending series. Psychological thrillers that tap into existentialism, explore alternate realities or imbibe certain horror elements also help create an engaging storyline. For instance, titles like Dark (2017-2020) and The Sinner (2017-2021).

In some cases, the culmination of sci-fi and fantasy ideas also becomes pronounced in mind-bending shows. Although not available on Netflix, Lost (2004-2010) is one such highly acclaimed show with 8.3 IMDb rating. Smoke monsters, polar bears in tropical settings and dangerous caves keep viewers guessing what’s more in store for the characters who stumble upon an eerie island after a plane crash. Netflix series like The OA (2016-2019) and Altered Carbon (2018-2020) also feature such ideas.

Falling under overlapping themes of noir, supernatural and mystery is a classic mind-bending show Twin Peaks (1990-1991). Created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, it has an 8.8 IMDb rating and features Kyle MacLachlan as FBI agent Dale Cooper, who investigates the murder of a young girl in the strange town of Twin Peaks. As he digs deep into its woods, Dale discovers strange things which make him fight his own demons.

Netflix’s Ghoul (2018) and If I Hadn’t Met You (2018) are other mind-bending Netflix series to watch in 2024 that have similar motifs. But who can forget 3 Body Problem, which boggled everyone’s minds with intense physics and plenty of drama. Read on for the best shows to watch now if you’re ready for a mind trip.
