Ellen DeGeneres Returns to Netflix for New Comedy Special — but Says 'This Is My Last' (Exclusive)

"Yes this is my last special," the former talk show host said in the announcement

Ellen DeGeneres is heading back to Netflix for a brand new stand-up comedy special!

The former talk show host, 66, previously starred in the 2018 special Relatable for the streamer. Her latest stand-up show, which will premiere on Netflix later this year, is also set to be her last taped special, according to the star.

In a release shared with PEOPLE, DeGeneres said, "To answer the questions everyone is asking me — Yes, I’m going to talk about it. Yes this is my last special. Yes, Portia [de Rossi] really is that pretty in real life."

Meanwhile, Robbie Praw, VP of Stand-Up and Comedy Formats at Netflix, added that "there is nobody quite like Ellen."

"She is a true legend and pioneer in so many ways," Praw concluded. "We can't wait to bring fans another one of her hilarious comedy specials later this year."

The special will be produced by Ben Winston and Fulwell73.

In addition to returning to Netflix, DeGeneres is also kicking off a multi-city stand-up tour on June 19, starting in San Diego.

While it seems she'll continue to tour and share her comedic musings with fans, DeGeneres' quote suggests she won't be making any future taped specials for Netflix, or anyone else. She also hinted that no topic will be off limits in her yet-to-be-titled special, including the end of her long-running series The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2022 after 19 seasons.

In 2020, a Buzzfeed News report sparked an internal investigation into allegations of a toxic workplace environment on the talk show's set.

The Ellen actress spoke later about the controversy during a comedy set at Largo in Los Angeles last month. During the show, she joked about being "kicked out of show business" for being "mean."

Even though she noted that she "hated the way the show ended," DeGeneres shared with attendees of her April show that she and her wife de Rossi, 51, are happy, and she's excited to be back on stage performing again.

At her April show, she said it was nice to be able to provide some "joy" during "a scary time" to live. She added, "I think that we need more laughter and less drama."

Throughout her long career in Hollywood, DeGeneres has garnered 33 Daytime Emmy Awards and one Primetime Emmy Award. Additionally, The Ellen DeGeneres Show earned 64 Daytime Emmy Awards, including 12 for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show.

In 2016, then-President Barack Obama honored the star with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work in leading change and advocating for LGBTQ+ rights.

More recently, DeGeneres has been focusing on gorilla conservation, which she highlighted in the 2023 Max special Saving the Gorillas: Ellen’s Next Adventure.
