"Stand back Superman, Ice Man, Spiderman, Batman and Robin too..." is a line most Glaswegians will recognise, as the theme tune sung by Billy Connolly that introduced our very own tartan-clad superhero, Super Gran.

Star of the magical eighties kids TV show, Gudrun Ure, who sadly passed away on Tuesday, (May 14) at the age of 98, brought this TV fave to life and was just 59 when she appeared as the now iconic Granny Smith, who hailed from the fictional Highland village of Glen Whisky.

The award-winning show, which ran from 1985 until 1987, saw Gudrun transform from a frail old lady into the eponymous superhero after being zapped by a "magic ray" and was based on the books written by Forrest Wilson.

Originally made for Tyne Tees Television for Children's ITV, Supergran became hugely popular with people asking 'Is there nothing that she cannae do?'.

Gudrun's enemy on the show was The Scunner Campbell played by the late actor and theatre director Iain Cuthbertson and the show was so popular it won an Emmy, and was sold to over 60 countries worldwide.

The show even made it as far as China and Cuba, where it was redubbed in Spanish.

The show was mainly shot in the North East of England, despite the main protagonist being a Scot, with places like Tynemouth, Whitley Bay and South Shields standing in for the fictional town of Chiselton.

Not content with just portraying a superhero, Gudrun even stepped up to perform many of her stunts herself, with the use of wires and trampolines helping to give the effect of her jumping and flying.

Performed by Billy Connolly, who also starred in one of the episodes, the famous theme tune was even released as a single in March 1985, reaching number 32 in the UK singles chart.

Other famous actors took part in the show including George Best, Spike Milligan, Eric Bristow, Roy Kinnear, Geoff Capes and it was the last show for actors Patrick Troughton and Charles Hawtrey.
