Cowboy and Cowgirl Track & Field Crown Three More Big 12 Champions on Final Day of Big 12 Outdoor Championships

May 12, 2024 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track

WACO, Texas – Oklahoma State outdoor track & field wrapped up action at the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Waco, Texas, with the Cowgirls taking fourth as a team and the Cowboys finishing eighth overall.

Following a series of weather delays on both Thursday and Friday, several track finals were converted into straight timed finals.

Gabija Galvydyte was the first of OSU's three Big 12 champions on the day as she successfully defended her outdoor 800 Meter crown with her time of 2:00.42, which currently ranks third in the NCAA this season. Houston's Kelly-Ann Beckford won the indoor 800 Meter title and took a massive lead early, coming through the first 400 meters in a blazing 55.74 seconds.

Her lead grew to roughly 50 meters with just 200 meters to go, but Galvydyte ran away from the rest of the pack and reeled Beckford in over the last 100 meters. She was able to complete the comeback with 20 meters left and finished with a personal best in a Cowgirl uniform as she now owns the two best 800 Meter times in OSU history.

Cowboy legend Alex Maier collected his seventh career Big 12 title in the men's 5,000 Meters Saturday with a Big 12 and Clyde Hart Stadium record of 13:36.19. The Flower Mound, Texas, native returned to his home state and ran a patient race behind teammate Denis Kipngetich (who finished third) and took the lead with roughly 200 meters to go, leaving no doubt as he won by over a second.

Rounding out the night was Cowgirl distance great Molly Born, who won her first career Big 12 title in her last conference race in the orange and black. Born won the women's 5,000 Meters with a time of 16:13.77, which was also a stadium record. Like Maier, Born ran a patient race near the front before taking the lead with about a mile to go and never looking back.

The Cowboys and Cowgirls return in two weeks for the NCAA West Prelims in Fayetteville, Ark, from May 22-25. Top 48 best marks in each event qualify for the West Prelims, with the top 12 marks at the meet in each advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Oregon.
