Nearly 2,000 new Grama Niladaris appointed

<p>The government has increased the office and stationary allowance for Grama Nildharis, Home Affairs State Minister Ashoka Priyantha said.</p>
<p>The minister told the Sunday Island that each GN in municipal and urban council areas would receive Rs 3,000 office and stationary allowance while those serving in Pradeshiya Sabha areas would receive Rs 2,000. The allowance has been back-dated to be effective from April 1, he said, adding that the Cabinet approval has been granted for the increment of allowances.</p>
<p>The Minister said that 1,942 new GN appointments were given by President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena at Temple Trees last Wednesday.</p>
<p>They have been selected from a competitive exam conducted by the Department of Examinations on Dec 20, last year, Ministry sources said, adding that there were around 120,000 applications of which around 76,000 sat for the examination. Of them 4,328 names had been sent by the Examinations Department to the Ministry and 1,942 have been able to pass the subsequent interview, the ministry sources said.</p>
<p>All those who received letters of appointment would be entitled for a Rs 47,900 starting salary and be recruited to Grade III of Grama Niladhari service after three months of training, sources said.</p>
<p>Candidates were mandated to meet educational qualifications that entailed achieving passes in six subjects, with at least four subjects requiring credit passes. Among these four subjects, it was imperative to include one of the first languages, either Sinhala or Tamil, and Mathematics, all obtained during the GCE (Ordinary Level) examination in a single sitting.
