Music Thread: A funny thing happened on the way to the Festival [Pete Bog]

stagecoach24.jpg

I had the chance to attend the Stagecoach Festival a few weeks ago. Stagecoach is a three day Country Music extravaganza in windy and warm Coachella, California. Friday night’s headliner did something on the “Mane” Stage that was one of the most interesting live performances I have ever seen.

I have been a fan of Eric Church's music for several years. His style was mostly wide open Country Rock and the occasional ballad featuring intelligent lyrics and musical word play. He has been a big star for at least 15 years with a devoted fan base that raved about his high energy shows. I had never seen him perform a live show.

***

Over the last few years Mr. Church had begun the unfortunate progression that many music stars follow. He had gone from writing stories chronicling the lives of the people he grew up with to becoming a bit of a scold lecturing through his music about the evils of our society. I have listened to him less recently because of this transition, much as I don’t listen to the New Jersey sellout any longer.

I was hopeful that on Friday night I would hear the great music that had made him popular and limited bouts of trying to save my soul. What I got was an old school revival that was directed at my soul in an entirely different way. Mr. Church strolled onto the stage in front of an illuminated backdrop that looked like the stained glass windows of a cathedral . The only things on the stage were a stool and couple of guitars on a stand. A gospel choir filed in behind him.

He began to sing. His opening number was Leonard Cohen’s “ Hallelujah”. That was not what the crowd expected. With the choir fully engaged he segued into “This little light of Mine” that took me back to Sunday school. He plowed a deeper furrow into what was obviously the Gospel grounding of his musical development. He started weaving in snippets of covers of a variety of artists including Bob Seger, Kenny Loggins. Motown and rap made appearances. Over the next hour and 15 minutes he performed without a break between songs, playing guitar backed only by an organ. I had the sense that I had joined an artist on his musical biography and it was magical. He sang solo, with the choir both individually and as a group with a strong clear voice. The pacing was tight, the show obviously was well rehearsed. He finally brought the band out for what was effectively an encore, ironically enough of one of his biggest hits titled “Springsteen”.

Over the course of his performance the crowd began walking out. First in small groups, then a steady stream. They were disappointed by not hearing the hits, and I suspect for many what was clearly a religious theme. He has been skewered in the reviews for what was one of the best musical performances I have ever witnessed.

Eric Church speaks out on his polarizing Stagecoach 2024 set: 'It felt good'

Can you recall a concert that was as memorable as this was for entirely unexpected reasons?

31 My father was a blithering idiot when it came to music. I entered the house one day during my university days when the news was on and they talked about the George Strait country music festival. I must have had a concert t-shirt on, especially a Dream Theater shirt, as that was part of the school uniform. He innocently asked “hey catch, are you going to the George Strait country music festival?” Mom, nearby, quickly intervened before I could make a smartass comment. “He doesn’t like country music.” “But it’s a concert!” “No, listen to me, he won’t be caught dead at a country music concert…”

39 I was in Nashville a few weeks ago with friends, visiting my son, and we went past Eric Church's new bar. On the marquee it said "Eric Church live from Stagecoach tonight" but I had no idea what that meant. I guess they must have live-streamed the concert in the bar. Wonder what that crowd thought of it.

I also had no idea that there was a country component to Coachella, as I am about as unhip as they come.

Glad you got to see such a cool concert, Pete Bog.

40 You know how the young 'uns sometimes get hooked on older music? Friend's son was over a couple weeks ago with a gun for me to fix. I had Sirius 60s channel on. He got to listening to it, and I explained the Phil Spector Wall of Sound. I also gave him a thumbnail sketch about Spector being a generally weird dude (but he didn't steal too much from the artists). Now, he and his crew at work are listening to stuff like the Ronettes. And they all agree Spector was one weird dude.

55 Rap is for people who can't do music.

Georg Szell said it. Called rap "An entertainment for children who are...not musical." He didn't say it was bad, just not music.

Other forms of recitative have been deracinated, so it's the only game in town for chanted language without melody.
You can sometimes get rappers interested in a Shakespeare soliloquy or a Greek chorus, if your backing effects are loud.

64 I've been to many wonderful concerts of all types of music from madrigals to jazz and they were excellent. but I've been to two concerts that had unexpected aspects.

The first was a John Denver concert when he was at the height of his popularity. He didn't just play the songs, he entertained with jokes and stories between numbers. The odd part was the audience. Everyone of us were softly singing along, as if to ourselves. The cumulative effect was a very soft cathedral-like lilt underneath his singing. This is something you can't expect. It was almost like being in church. Lovely.

The second concert that surprised me was a Carpenters show. The surprise was the sophisticated music they displayed, especially Richard, between the well-known songs that everyone expected. And they incorporated bits that were never intended for the records but were brief and creative for live performance. Over 50 years later I still recall the concert.

I don't listen to much music these days. Listen to podcasts and read a lot of non-fiction. However, back in the day I listened to a LOT of live music. The Dead and all its spinoffs, funk, jazz, rock (Allmans at the Beacon for years), etc. etc. etc. I listened to rap back in the Run DMC days, and all the big ones up through Biggie and the Beastie Boys and Eminem. Rap is a legitimate art form, and it was absolutely incredible, especially during that period. Ready To Die is one of my absolute favorite albums. He's certainly not a singer.

I've been listening to The Allman Brothers Band and ABB adjacent. Just finished 'One Way Out'. Live album from 2004. Minus Dickey Betts, who got fired. The guitarists were the criminally underrated Warren Haynes and the very good Derek Trucks, who's current band is worth a listen. His wife, Susan Tedeschi, is no slouch as a singer (Tedeschi-Trucks Band). Warren Haynes has been around a bit now. Govt Mule is great. I got an early solo cd of his that holds up very well. One peak for me was Beastie Boys. In a class of their own. Another was the 90s artists' judicious and tasteful use of obscure jazz and real R&B samples, which ended by the 2000s. They forgot their roots. Today is another peak for the underground technical scene -- anything on the labels Strange Famous Records or Rhymesayers Entertainment. You'll never know they exist unless you search, as these artists aren't the one-eye ticket takers of fame, magazine covers, Tik Tok and autotune.

There is a similarly nigh unknown underground country music scene -- better and deeper than anything the well promoted soul-sellers have to offer. But you have to look for it. It will never be on the Grammy or CMA stage. That's what you have to pay your soul for.

Every one of Meshuggah’s songs are a warning: that the next step in evolution is the merger of man and machine, and that IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN, IT WILL HAPPEN, IT WILL HAPPEN SOONER RATHER THAN LATER and when it inevitable happens, IT WILL BE HELL FOR HUMANITY. So no, it cannot be sung any other way.

Nope. You just have to search the underground scene. It's still being made. Just not promoted. Not promoted means you have to look for it.

Eric Church is one of the Promoted. The one-eye crowd isn't limited to pop, rap, TV, Hollywood, and modeling. It's country music, too. It's contemporary "Christian" music, too. You sell your soul, you get the fame. Bada bing, bada boom.

117 I haven't been to any concerts for a long time. Too few appear in my area that I want to see and I won't pay the ticket prices they want. Talk about sticker shock.

One aspect that made concerts enjoyable was when the performer(s) seemed to be having a good time. Yes, I know that's showmanship but it went beyond simply appearing and playing the songs. Manhattan Transfer and Peter, Paul, and Mary were especially good at that. I suspect Charlie Daniels would have been too. But Blood, Sweat and Tears or Herb Alpert, for all the musical ability and great songs, just walked on stage, played the music and left.

I have no idea if modern concerts involve that feeling of fun.

If anything chanted is rap, then the choruses of Greek drama are rap too. There is a whole genre of the spoken word, like Robert Frost and Carl Sandburg reading their own poems on record for instance, and rap is the only one we pay attention to right now.

Back when poetry was still a big deal (not that long ago, but probably not within your listening lifetime) there were many such performances.

156 Georg Szell said it.

Reggie Dwight did the same thing on an interview/sing song with fans on XM a few years ago. He told them to stop listening to his old crap as it meant nothing and the lyrics were all written to rhyme and sell after fans kept asking him what this lyric meant or the "deep" meaning of that lyric. The fans were gob smacked and he told them to listen to and find new stuff from new artists then named a few and to get a life. I almost peed my pants from laughing.

181 I saw the Dixie Dregs at a club called The Bottom Line in NYC. All I knew was some review that said, about seeing them as an opening act, "Whoa. Who are these guys, and where did they come from?"

As was my wont at the time, I got to the venue hours before the show, and wound up right up by the stage. So I had a better seat than a guy sitting at a table about 6 feet back and to my right, who was Dickie Betts. I figured I must be in for a treat if he was drawn there.

The show was incredible, all-instrumental electric bluegrass on steroids. I'd never seen anything so high-energy and speedy and crackling with energy. Afterwards, my jaw was sore, because I'd been smiling so hard the whole time.

203 Hairyback: I ran into a similar situation as a bookseller. Customers wanted the authors to stick to their series.

Tony Miller man had cancer, and didn't release a new book for two or three years. He finally was able to write again and released a book titled Moon and it was a stand alone. OMG!!! You would have thought the world was ending because Moon didn't have Joe Leap horn or Jim Chee.

Kent Krieger did the same thing. He was tired of writing Cork O'Connor books and released Ordinary Grace. Frankly, I thought Ordinary Grace was one of his best, but the audience just wasn't all that impressed. Kent's written two or three other books in the Ordinary Grace universe since then, and the fans finally picked up on them

I tried explaining to disappointed customers that while we, the readers, read a book for a few days once a year, the writers were living with their characters and back ground 365 days a year, and occasionally got sick and tired or bored. And frankly, some of them just ran out of ideas. They wanted to take a year off. I remember Kent whining and moaning one time because he had absolutely no idea what the next Cork O'Connor was going to be.

Music is like food or whisky/whiskey or aromas, everyone has their favorites and any attempt at making top-X lists is futile. If we assume that music is universal and not just US-centric, I had never heard of the Eagles until returning to the USA in 1994 and then the only song that had any appeal was Hotel California. That's just me but their appeal outside the USA may have been limited prior to the Internet.

Since I'm home I watched it and...what's the big deal? It's mostly just the band all the songs from that album in different contexts plus some covers and a couple of snippets of conversations. Apparently it was terribly controversial and the band (minus good ole dead Lennon) stopped it from being re-released? I don't know why. The expanded Peter Jackson version, Get Back, was way more damning by comparison and even then it mostly showed the frustrations of a band trying to produce more hits while under the spotlight.

Anywho...

It's short, it looks good, the songs are decent so it's worth a watch.

231 Every parking lot in the last few hours before a Dead concert is always the most interesting concert I ever went to.

Lucky enough to have seen many big acts in rock and country in my teens and 20s. My dad was a session musician in Nashville the 60s, so I saw a lot when I was a kid, too. Had family connections on the rock side, and spent many a night in the lobbies of hotels, wondering what in God's name was going on in the rooms and buses, and how the hell I was going to get home if my cousins didn't live through it.

The only band I love and never got to see was Pink Floyd. I wouldn't give Roger Asshole the money now, but would probably see Gilmour if the opportunity arose.

Don't like metal or rap as genres but there metal and rap songs I do like.

Pretty much a Southern rock, Classic rock and old school country listener. I get nostalgic hearing a lot of the 80s New Wave stuff like The Cure, and I still love the GoGos.
Note for note, the most fun I ever had at a concert was probably at Cajun festivals with groups like Beausoleiel and Doug Kershaw, because I love to dance. But big names in small clubs like The Paomino or Whisky A Go Go were crazy good, too. Love symphonies.

232 And now I'm going to watch O Beother, Where Art Thou? Also very musical. And quotable.

It’s impossible not to have fun when a Cajun band is playing.

Yes I like this guy and 'Sultans of Swing' with Mary Spender (I guess she's not cheap) is my favorite. Also Mary is very easy on the eyes (3rd link above).

240 Rush, on the other hand, played their newer material but always made room for the old songs the long timers loved.

When lifeson came out with that white 355 and hammered out by-tor and the snow dog I just about shit my pants. He hadn't used it in decades, seeing him use it again on the old stuff was intense. the sound in the room went up 10 fold.

242 Just discovered a new cover: "Tarzan Boy" by Unleash the Archers. A heavier version of the silly 80's anthem. Pretty cool. But it's a 'bonus track' that doesn't seem to be available on iTunes.

Another (slightly) older cover I stumbled across was The Birthday Massacre covering "The Neverending Stroy." Another fun twist on another 80's anthem.

The "Don't Fear the Reaper" cover mentioned earlier also sounds pretty cool....

243 Saw Floyd live. They were at that time past their prime. This was the late eighties.

Still the best concert I've seen. Really amazing.

244 Best surprise:
I was probably 12 or so and my parents, who were huge Ella Fitzgerald fans, took me to see her in concert. About halfway into her set, she does a double take, looks into the wings and says, "What are you doing here?"
And out walks Duke Ellington. He was on his way to somewhere else and apparently heard she was in town. He sat down at the piano, and they played a few songs together.
The place was going nuts. And even though I was too young to fully realize what was going on, I did have the feeling that I was watching something historic.

245 Saw BB King about a decade ago. Old school concert in a small venue (with a bar!!) Dude would entertain with stories about each and every song.

Pretty cool.

246 I took my wife to see Rick Springfield do a “stripped down” show a couple years ago. It was just him, his guitars, two road crew and a few prerecorded tracks to fill out the sound. He told stories from the road and his music and played guitar. It was an amazing show. Last summer, we caught him with the band, and while that was a great show, if you can only catch one, make it the stripped down version.

On a similar note, I saw Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden do a spoken word show. He’s an engaging storyteller and some of his stories were even about the band.

Country isn't really country anymore. They all try to do crossover crap to get the big bucks. Not really worth listening to. I listen to a station that plays a good amount of old stuff, then change the station if any new stuff comes on.

250 "Over the course of his performance the crowd began walking out. First in small groups, then a steady stream. They were disappointed by not hearing the hits, and I suspect for many what was clearly a religious theme"

And rightly so. Not everyone wants that crap shoved down their throats. The Conservative Treehouse has gotten so bad that I hardly ever read it. The comments are nothing but bible thumping drones praising Sundance and Jesus.

And I'm noticing more of it here as well. So much for a smart military blog. Bring back the lace wigs!

The Dead South did an excellent version of "this little light of mine" a few years ago.

251 WE Fest, 1990, in Detroit Lakes, MN. Glen Campbell is the lead-in to top billed Barbara Mandrell, who was at the top of her game. For those who don't remember, Barbara was like Sammy Davis, Jr. She could sing, play about 12 instruments, dance, and had two sisters who were nearly as good.

But Glen really rocked the place. The crowd loved him. They refused to let him leave the stage. He went through all his hits, then he did a bunch of Beach Boys stuff, then just whatever came to his mind, and the crowd loved all of it.

Barbara, sitting in her bus backstage, sent word that if Glen didn't get his ass off the stage she was leaving. He did. The crowd was kind of on an edge. She just wasn't making it happen. I watched her run down the back stairs to her bus for one of several costume changes, then back up less than 90 seconds later.

And then, showing her versatility, she did a rap number. At that same moment the staff opened the big gates as they always do 1/2 of the way through the headline act. And the crowd flooded out. They were not interested in rap.

She finished to about 1/3 of the audience she started with and vowed never to return. She has not been invited.
