In the field of architectural restoration, Mecanoo maintains its reputation for innovative projects that honor the past while incorporating modern advancements. Building upon the success of their acclaimed renovation of the New York Public Library, Mecanoo embarked on the ambitious journey of revitalizing Perth’s former City Hall—a majestic structure steeped in the grandeur of the Edwardian Period since its inauguration in 1914.

Perth’s former City Hall, with its classical façade and rich heritage, posed both a challenge and an opportunity for Mecanoo. With the precision of skilled artisans, the project was approached with a delicate balance between preservation and rejuvenation. Beginning in 2017, the team immersed themselves in Perth’s scenic landscapes, deeply connecting with the city’s storied past.

Upon entering the weathered City Hall, once a vibrant concert venue, Mecanoo was struck by its faded splendor and potential for renewal. Beyond its walls, exploration led to the discovery of hidden vennels—narrow alleys—that intricately weave through Perth’s urban fabric, unveiling the city’s untold narratives.

Central to Mecanoo’s vision was the introduction of a symbolic passage—a Vennel—cutting through the heart of the building, uniting the Main Hall and the Lesser Hall. This architectural intervention, marked by imposing bronze doors crafted in Black Isle, pays homage to Scotland’s rich craftsmanship and history.

The former Lesser Hall underwent a remarkable transformation into a dynamic communal space, featuring a café and event venue, symbolizing Mecanoo’s commitment to functionality and inclusivity. By lowering windows to floor level, natural light floods the space, offering panoramic views of St. John’s Kirk, and transforming it into a vibrant hub for community engagement.

At the core of the museum lies the Main Hall—an enclave for Scotland’s historical treasures, including the revered Stone of Destiny. Inspired by this iconic artifact, Mecanoo fashioned a bespoke oak box, elevating it to a prominent position within the hall. Surrounding it, a meticulously detailed balcony showcases Scotland’s national history, inviting visitors to delve into the past.

Mecanoo’s philosophy of People, Place, Purpose, and Poetry reverberates throughout the project. Designed with the people of Scotland in mind, inspired by Perth’s urban fabric, Mecanoo’s museum stands as a timeless example of accessibility and cultural enrichment. As visitors step into the space, they are greeted by the poetic interplay of history and modernity, a true reflection of Mecanoo’s transformative approach to architectural restoration.
