Holland Taylor & Ana Villafañe To Play Congresswomen (Hint Hint) In Off Broadway’s ‘N/A’

Holland Taylor and Ana Villafañe will star in the Off Broadway world premiere of Mario Correa’s new play N/A this summer, playing congresswomen of different generations in a production directed by Tony winner Diane Paulus.

Taylor will play “N,” the first woman Speaker of the House, and Villafañe will portray “A,” the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. The play is described as being inspired by real people and events, and although producers did not name names the descriptions more-than-strongly suggest Nancy Pelosi and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

N/A will begin previews on Tuesday, June 11, at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center, with opening night on Sunday, June 23.

The official synopsis reads, “N/A is a whip smart battle of wills – and wits – between N, the first woman Speaker of the House, and A, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. Inspired by real people and events, this riveting two-hander illuminates the most powerful woman in American history…and the once-in-a-generation political talent who defied her.”

The production will mark Taylor’s return to the New York stage eight years after Broadway’s The Front Page in 2016. Other stage credits include her Tony-nominated portrayal of Texas Governor Ann Richards in Ann (2013), David Lindsay Abaire’s dark comedy Ripcord, A.R. Gurney’s The Cocktail Hour, and the legendary 1983 Broadway flop Moose Murders. TV credits include The Morning Show, Billions and The Practice, among many others.

Villafañe originated the role of ‘Gloria Estefan’ in the hit musical On Your Feet! and played Roxie Hart when Chicago re-opened after the pandemic. She has appeared on TV in New Amsterdam, Younger and Sunnyside. She plays the title role in the upcoming feature film Castro’s Daughter.

The playwright, who worked for years as a Congressional aide, is best known for his acclaimed 2015 Off Broadway comedy Tail! Spin! starring Rachel Dratch. Film credits include Dark Waters, directed by Todd Haynes and starring Mark Ruffalo and Anne Hathaway, and the in-development Let Her Speak, with Laura Dern attached in the lead role.

Paulus’ many Broadway credits include Jagged Little Pill, 1776, Waitress and Pippin. She’s set to direct Romeo and Juliet this fall for Massachusetts’ A.R.T., where she is the Terrie and Bradley Bloom Artistic Director.

The creative team for N/A includes Myung Hee Cho (Scenic & Costume Design), Mextly Couzin (Lighting Design), Sunny Kil (Sound Design), and Yee Eun Nam (Projection Design).

N/A is produced by Jeffrey Richards, Bob Boyett, Louise Gund, Hunter Arnold, M/B/P Productions and Broadway Breakfast Club. Although the production will play at the Mitzi E. Newhouse, it is not a Lincoln Center Theater production.
