After reaching the playoffs in 2023-24, the Cleveland Browns are looking to build on their success.

Quarterback Deshaun Watson returned to throwing at full speed in April after undergoing shoulder surgery in November that cut his season short for the second straight year. Over two seasons with the Browns, Watson has made just 12 starts as a result of a suspension and injuries.

Cleveland made a surprise run to the 2023 postseason with help from veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, who made five victorious starts late in the season to give the Browns a shot at the Wild Card.

The Browns are now hoping to continue on to the divisional round for what would be just the third time since 1994. This time, team will hope to do so behind Watson.

Analysis

Thanks to a second-place finish in the AFC North, the Browns were granted one of the most difficult 2024 schedules in the NFL.

In addition to six division games in a brutal AFC North comprised of four teams looking to contend, the Browns are slated to meet the second-place teams from the AFC East, AFC South and NFC South with matchups against the Dolphins, Jaguars and Saints.

After playing nine games at home last year, Cleveland pays the price with a less friendly road-game heavy schedule this season.

This schedule will present a major test for Watson in what could be his first full NFL season since 2020.

Pivotal Matchups

No team has ever dealt more losses to the Browns than the Steelers, and the black and gold will get two more chances with a strengthened offense this season.

The Browns claimed a 13-10 win over this AFC North rival in the last matchup between these two teams on Nov. 19. Will Cleveland be able to do the same now that Pittsburgh has added Russell Wilson and Justin Fields to the quarterback room?

The Browns are also set for another tough division battles against the Ravens, a team boasting one of the one of the best quarterback-receiver duos in the league with Lamar Jackson and Zay Flowers.

This season may be stacked with formidable opponents, but Cleveland will benefit from having their toughest matchups take place at home. The team will meet powerhouse teams like the Cowboys and Chiefs at Cleveland Browns Stadium, where the Browns claimed a division-leading eight wins in 2023.

The Browns still have to face opponents like the Jaguars and Eagles on the road, so it's going to be a tough climb back to 11 wins for the Browns against this strength of schedule.

Two-time NFL Coach of the Year Kevin Stefanski will have the chance to win the honor for a third time if he is able to lead this team back to the postseason in 2024.
