After eliminating Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals today, the US’s Tommy Paul is through to the semi-finals of the Italian Open for the first time in his career. The No. 14 seed in the men’s singles tournament, the 26-year-old will take on Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas or Chile’s Nicolás Jarry in the last four.

Paul edges out Hurkacz in the Italian capital

Paul, who had reached the quarter-finals by knocking out defending champion Daniil Medvedev, earned a three-set victory over Hurkacz in just under three hours, winning 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 at Foro Italico.

“I started off pretty well, but things really got away from me there in the second set, and at the beginning of the third,” Paul said post-match, in quotes published by the ATP. “I just had to stick around, fake a little energy to get myself going there in the third. I started looking for my forehand more, started hitting it bigger, and playing with a little bit more intensity. That was probably the key for me in the end.”

No American man has reached an Italian Open singles final since André Agassi won the tournament back in 2002.

Paul will face either Tsitsipas or Jarry on Friday 17 May 2024, at a time still to be confirmed.

When is Tsitsipas vs Jarry?

Tsitsipas, who is the sixth seed in Rome, takes on No. 21 seed Jarry today, Thursday 16 May 2024. The quarter-final clash on Center Court is scheduled to be played not before 7pm local time (1pm ET/10am PT).

In Friday’s other men’s singles semi-final, Chilean Alejandro Tabilo - who surprisingly beat world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the third round - will face Germany’s Alexander Zverev.
