Three Teacher Unions disappointed over govt’s handling of negotiations

0

Three pre-tertiary teacher unions have expressed disappointment in the government’s approach to negotiations regarding their working conditions.

On Tuesday, April 2, 2024, these unions, including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), called off their two-week-old strike over conditions of service following an interim injunction obtained by the National Labour Commission (NLC) to cease the industrial action and commence negotiations.

Despite the strike’s conclusion, the unions remain dissatisfied with the government’s handling of negotiations.

In a statement released on Monday, April 15, they criticised the government’s lacklustre response to addressing teachers’ working conditions.

The unions highlighted the lack of significant progress in negotiations and expressed concerns that the government team appears ill-equipped to adequately respond to their demands.

Warning of potential further disruptions at the pre-tertiary level, the unions urged that Teacher Union Leaders should not be held responsible should such issues arise, emphasising the need for the government to address their concerns promptly.

Disability group slams Shatta Wale for mocking Stonebwoy

0

The Ghana Society of Physically Disabled (GSPD) has condemned dancehall artiste Shatta Wale for making derogatory remarks about his fellow artiste Stonebwoy.

In a video circulating online, Shatta Wale was observed mocking Stonebwoy’s disability.

Allegedly, Shatta Wale mocked Stonebwoy, suggesting that his disability was a result of being a bad person in the eyes of God.

In a statement issued on April 15, the GSPD denounced Shatta Wale’s conduct as “irresponsible”, emphasizing that attitudes towards disabilities like those expressed are unacceptable.

“The Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD) has seen a video circulating on social media where Shatta Wale mocks Stonebwoy with his disability. In the said Video, Shatta Wale said among other negative statements ‘You are a bad person that is why God made you a disabled person, you are a disabled person don’t try and fight an able person’ By this statement he is trying to say all persons with disabilities are bad that is why God has made us who we are.”

They highlighted the diversity of their community, including fans of Shatta Wale, and called for respect and understanding.

They urged Shatta Wale to take corrective actions by removing the offensive video and issuing apologies to those affected.

The GSPD reminded the public that mocking an individual’s disability is not only offensive but also legally reprehensible, citing the Disability Act 715.

“This primitive statement should not have come from a high-profile personality like Shata Wale. This is an act of irresponsibility and this should be condemned by all. We want to remind Shatta Wale that a section of his fans who are making him who he is are persons with disabilities. Did he think how they would feel? or Shatta Wale thinks he has made it so he does not care?

“The GSPD takes exception to this statement and asks Shatta Wale to retract the statement, remove such video from social media and apologize to all persons with disability and Ghanaians. The GSPD reiterates that being a person with a disability does not mean you are cursed, or God is punishing you.

“Using a person’s disability to mock him or her or making derogatory remarks about a person’s disability is a punishable offence by law, refer to the Disability Act 715.”

We demand complete overhaul of all EC security protocols – Fifi Kwetey

0

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, is demanding a complete overhaul of all security protocols at the Electoral Commission (EC).

He says there is the crucial need to review and strengthen security protocols ahead of the 2024 elections for the well-being of the nation and the people of Ghana

Speaking at the latest Moment of Truth series of the party on Monday, April 15, he asserted that “Investigation must be conducted with oversight from credible independent international bodies. We further call for the comprehensive review and overhaul of all security protocols within the EC to ensure that such breaches cannot occur in the future.

“The integrity of the Electoral Commission and by extension the democratic integrity of Ghana must not be compromised.”

The breaches he referred to concern the alleged theft of Biometric Verification Registration (BVR) devices and laptops at the EC.

Mr Kwetey highlighted the significance of every piece of equipment in the EC’s inventory, stressing that each has the potential to significantly influence the electoral process.

He expressed concern over the theft of such devices, which he said could lead to insider threats or external breaches and thereby compromising sensitive systems.

The NDC scribe criticised assurances by EC officials, deeming them inadequate and indicative of a lack of understanding of electoral security complexities and requirements.

“The assurances do not suffice in the face of potential electoral tempering or fraud. We cannot and must not accept this. We stand before you today to declare that nothing less than the rigorous, transparent and secure electoral process is acceptable” he stressed.

Mr Kwetey underscored the importance of safeguarding Ghana’s democracy, the will of Ghanaians, and the future stability of the nation.

He reaffirmed the NDC’s unwavering commitment to preserving democracy in Ghana and called for decisive action to ensure the security of the electoral process to reflect the true will of the people.

Election 2024: I’ll contest Okaikwei North as an independent candidate

0

Following his dissatisfaction with the electoral process leading to his loss in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary in Okaikwei North, Kenneth Agyei Kuranchie has announced his intention to contest as an independent candidate in the 2024 parliamentary elections.

In an interview with Citi News, Kuranchie expressed his determination to secure victory in the December elections.

“I am very deeply unhappy as to how the parliamentary nomination system and the whole parliamentary primary process was conducted by the party. By the party at the constituency, by the party at the region, by the party at the national.

“The way and manner the party bent rules and did away with rules and laws in order to make certain things possible. I am deeply unhappy. So that also informs my reasons to get out of that political party.”

“I am not deceiving myself that it is going to be an easy contest. I am contesting against two of the major political parties in Ghana. They have soldiers on the ground. They can count a certain number of people to immediately go to work for them.

“I do not have that level of organisational structure in place now. So it is for me to do the hard work to get on the ground, build my own organisation, make my own friends, build my own structures and see whether I cannot fight and beat the two political parties here,” he stated.

El Rufai said: “I don’t want to be a godfather and that’s why I don’t interfere in what is happening in Kaduna, I want him (the governor) to learn and get the job by himself.

“What we lack is good leadership, the major aspects of good quality of leadership.

“The leader should get good people to get the job done. Only God can do everything by himself, no matter how good you are as a leader, you can be as effective as people around you and that’s why the saying that no country get better than the quality of his civil services,”

NPP reacts to former MP’s decision to go independent

0

Kwabena Owusu Aduomi

Former Member of Parliament for the Ejisu Constituency, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, has been advised to pull the brakes on his decision to contest the upcoming by-election as an independent candidate.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi made the clarion call on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Tuesday.

Mr Aduomi announced his bid in a press release on Friday, April 12, 2024.

He attributed the decision to what he described as the reluctance of the party to deal with crucial concerns with the voter album.

The release further pointed to flaws in the election process for polling station executives, claiming the deceased MP with the help of regional party executives handpicked some persons for key positions.

However, Chairman Wontumi said the party has taken steps for Mr Aduomi to reconsider his decision, adding until his grievances are resolved, he would expect him to exercise restraint.

According to him, it will not be in the interest of anyone for someone [Mr Aduomi] who has benefitted from the party to take decisions that will hurt members.

“The NPP has helped him. Someone was there before he came and when it was his time, we all supported him. Aduomi became an MP and deputy Minister so we are still engaging him.

If he is hurt or bitter in any way, I will urge him to let go and rather rally behind the NPP for us to emerge victorious,” he appealed.

35 looted artefacts to be displayed at Manhyia Palace

0

The Ashanti Kingdom is expected to display 35 pieces of looted artefacts in the coming days after they were presented to the Manhyia Palace by the Victoria & Albert Museum and the British Museum.

This comes after officials from the Fowler Museum in Los Angeles handed over the first batch of looted artefacts taken by the British 150 years ago during the Sagrenti War.

The Fowler Museum presented artefacts including ornaments, jewellery, talismans, and other treasures.

The Victoria & Albert and the British Museum have among others also returned artefacts such as a gold peace pipe, a sword of state and gold badges worn by officials charged with cleansing the soul of the king.

The return of the items comes ahead of celebrations marking the silver jubilee of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II.

A renowned historian at the Manhyia Palace, Sarfo Kantanka expressed excitement about the arrival of the stolen items and highlighted the cultural significance of the artefacts.

“Every piece of art you see among Africans in general and the Ashanti in particular is of great significance. It speaks volumes; it’s of physical, spiritual and moral significance. These are our own artefacts which were forcefully taken away. So, if they are being brought back, we have to jubilate because it is ours.

“Again, it is of great spiritual significance. Apart from what you are seeing, the artworks could be copied by modern artists and modern craftsmen. Each piece also has a spiritual significance. So, it is important to us physically, spiritually, mentally because we study it in schools,” he told Citi News in an interview.

The historian is also hopeful that, with continued negotiations, the items could be given to the Manhyia Palace Museum permanently.

“So long as negotiations are going on and so long as they are feeling guilty for what they did, it stands that they will bring it for good,” he stated.

Many Nigerians Don’t Know Tinubu Is Still Subsidising Fuel, Paying More Than Before — El-Rufai

0

El-Rufai: States Should Harness Comparative Advantages To Increase IGR
Nasir El-Rufai

Former Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, has posited that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is still running the fuel subsidy regime.

According to him, a lot of Nigerians don’t know that the Federal Government is currently paying more for fuel subsidies than before it was removed by Tinubu in 2023.

El-Rufai made the submission on Monday while fielding questions from newsmen in Maiduguri, Borno State, after delivering a lead paper during a capacity-building workshop for top officials of the State government.

He asserted that the restoration of fuel subsidy is what made the price of petrol per litre to be at about N600 to N750, which could have been much higher than the diesel, which is now sold above N1,000 depending on the location.

His words: “A good leader must be decisive and have the ability to make good decisions, trustworthy, empower others irrespective of political, religious or ethnic considerations, have clear communication skills and resilient in all ramifications.

“Though, it is too early to judge the present administration, is just been there for only nine (9) months, and you know leadership is work in progress, you start something as I said in my speech, you start a policy because you are absolutely sure is the right policy, but in the course of implementation, if you see bottlenecks, you modify, because the key word in leadership in my view is not ideology or anything, is pragmatism.

READ ALSO: ‘If APC Gets It Wrong, PDP Must Get It Right’ — Ondo Leaders Rejects Aiyedatiwa’s Candidacy

“You should always be pragmatic. You are not God, only God is perfect, so as a good leader, when you make a policy and you started implementing, and it doesn’t seem to work well, you should have the humility to stand back and said, this is not working.

“For example, if you appoint a person to a position and he is not performing to expectation, you should have the humility to say look, I need a better person to do the job perfectly. Leadership is a continuous thing and in a term of four years, you can’t assess a government of nine months.

“But as I also said earlier during my presentation, the removal of fuel subsidy by the present administration is another good policy by President Tinubu. I have always supported withdrawal of fuel subsidy. But as you can see, in the course of implementation, the government has now realized that the subsidy has to be back, because right now, we are paying a lot of money amounting to trillions of naira for subsidy even more than before, because the impact has been seen and the packages of support that will reduce the impact have not been effective in reducing the impact, and so, the federal government has to backpedal by subsidizing petrol.

“Many people don’t know this. If they want to know whether there is fuel subsidy or not, they should compare the prices of petrol and diesel per litre. This is because, under normal circumstances, petrol suppose to be more expensive than diesel. As it is, diesel is above N1000, while petrol stood at about N600 per litre. So we are still subsidizing for fuel in Nigeria.”

Are you actually afraid of love? 2 big fears that keep you single

0

Fear is a funny thing. When you’re in a scary situation — say you’re confronted by a bear—it’s easy to know what you’re feeling. You’re afraid. And, you know that what’s causing the fear is a very definite threat to your physical well-being. Fear has a purpose — to keep you safe.

You want to get the heck away from that bear as fast as possible. And, fear compels you to take action. When it comes to relationships, fear is a bit harder to identify. You’re not exactly sweating bullets and fearing for your life. You probably don’t have such a strong visceral response.

But, the fear is just as valid. We’ve found that relationship-based fears (some call it “fear of intimacy”) tend to come in two flavours. And, both serve the same purpose: to keep you safe. Unfortunately, they also keep you from having a close, loving relationship.

Are you afraid of love? Here are 2 big fears that keep you single:

1. Fear of being abandoned

This one is familiar to most people. Being in a committed, loving relationship involves taking risks. Fully knowing another and creating intimacy, requires vulnerability. The minute you commit to someone and share love with them, you also open yourself to the risk of being left.

It’s a very scary premise — that you can let someone into your heart only to have the relationship not work out.

The threat here is clear: it’s the pain of heartbreak. This threat is especially terrifying if you’ve been looking for the “real deal” for a long time and can’t bear the thought of another relationship not working out. This is fear’s way of keeping you safe — if you don’t get too close, there’s nothing to fear (or so we tell ourselves).

2. Fear of being smothered

As much as you may genuinely want a lasting, loving relationship, part of you might be afraid that having such a relationship is going to take away your freedom. The common “other half” mentality leads to fears about getting into a relationship — by suggesting that we are each somehow incomplete until we find a partner, we might feel that we have to compromise a great deal.

Being single comes with a lot of freedom — you get to decide what to do with your time and what your priorities are. The perspective of a close relationship presents another kind of threat: the potential loss of individuality, autonomy, and personal space.

Fear of being abandoned and being smothered shows up in a lot of ways. Sometimes people are very picky about a mate, or they check out the whole dating process altogether. Others create unnecessary expectations for relationships or inadvertently stir up tension in a relationship when they do get into one.

And here’s the kicker: these two fears tend to take hold of us at the same time. We genuinely want a relationship, but we’re also equally afraid of being left AND of losing ourselves. No wonder why finding a great partner and creating a healthy relationship feels like a shot in the dark.

But, once you dissolve these fears, you unshackle yourself from their effects. And then, love will start flowing your way so fast, you won’t want to stop it. Once you free yourself from fear, you attract lasting love.

We both struggled with fears of abandonment and being smothered before we met each other (over 30 years ago), and these fears still crept in after we got together. But, because we were both deeply interested in relationships, we discovered how we could keep these fears from interfering in our lives. That’s a big part of the reason why our marriage works.

Relationship fears are often inherited — we learned them during our childhoods, and they’ve followed us into our adult years. And, there’s nothing like love or the prospect of it to trigger these fears at the deepest level.

Once you identify your fears and resolve them at a deep level, you create a shift that sets in motion exactly what you’ve been craving: a fearless relationship brimming with limitless joy, connection, and passion. There’s no need to fear being left or being trapped in a relationship.

When you’re finally in the right relationship, you’ll know what it’s like to feel completely safe. You’ll be able to feel a close connection with your mate while maintaining your individuality — honoring yourself and each other. It’s a delicious feeling like no other.

Fire at late Krachi East MCE’s office: NPP suspects foul play

0

Fire at late Krachi East MCE’s office

The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Krachi East municipality of the Oti Region has called on the Police to investigate the fire outbreak at the office of late Municipal Chief Executive, Bernard Aborkugya.

They suspects foul play as the fire outbreak occurred exactly a week after his death.

Speaking with Adom News, the former Member of Parliament, Michael Yaw Gyato said the timing of the fire just a week after the MCE’s death is suspicious.

According to him, it is crucial for the Police to take swift action to determine the cause of the fire and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

Mr. Gyato noted that, the people of Krachi deserve answers and justice, and it is up to the Police to give them closure.

Only then, he stated can the community begin to heal and move forward from this tragic event.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Friday morning, quickly engulfed the entire building, leaving nothing but ashes in its wake.

The incident has left the community in shock and disbelief, as they mourn the loss of their beloved leader.

Bernard Aborkugya was known for his dedication to serving the people of Krachi East, and his sudden passing has left a void that will be difficult to fill.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but many suspect foul play given the timing of the incident.

Taxing foreign incomes of resident Ghanaians a smart approach – Tax Analyst

0

Francis Tomore Boi, a renowned Tax Analyst, has endorsed the government’s initiative to tax the foreign incomes of resident Ghanaians as a strategic move to address the revenue shortfall resulting from the abandoned VAT on electricity.

He described this as a smart move by the government.

His comments are on the back of the government’s move to plug the revenue gap created as a result of the abandoned VAT on electricity with a tax on the foreign incomes of resident Ghanaians.

The government indicated that it is confident that ensuring compliance with the tax on foreign incomes will close the revenue gap.

In an interview with Eyewitness News on April 15, 2024, Mr Tomore Boi highlighted the potential of this tax policy by referencing the Commissioner General’s report from January.

The report disclosed the examination of approximately 70,000 foreign accounts, totalling nearly $3 billion.

“Yes, it is, because in January the Commissioner General announced that they have examined about 70,000 accounts and the amount in these foreign accounts is close to $3 billion and per their assessment, they have analysed and they have raised about $1.6billion on individuals who own those accounts. If they are able to collect these $1.6 billion, clearly it is going to be more than the projected revenue that was going to be raised from the VAT of household consumption,” he stated.

Addressing concerns about the implementation of this new tax approach, Mr Tomore Boi, explained that the global exchange of information among over 160 tax authorities has made it increasingly difficult for individuals to evade taxes.

He warned that failure to disclose foreign income could lead to severe penalties, including imprisonment, as tax evasion constitutes a criminal offence.

“Before, access to information was quite difficult and people would always evade tax when the activities cannot be found out. Now, because of the exchange of information where over 160 tax authorities are exchanging financial transactions about potential taxpayers, it looks like if you don’t come out and your information comes up to any of the tax authorities, in this case, GRA, they will invite you and the offence is going to go against you.

“You will not be able to evade and if they find out that you failed to disclose that income then you are going to impose those sanctions on you which will even include imprisonment because tax evasion is a crime,” he added.

How to get back into dating after a long-term relationship crumbles

0

Being single again after a years-long relationship can be weird, to say the least. It may seem like, one minute, you have a steady cuddle buddy to spoon with every night, and the next, you’re painfully aware of how big your bed feels now that you’re the only one in it.

And let’s be honest—your flirting skills might be a little rusty, making the thought of striking up a conversation with a cute stranger all the more intimidating.

Getting over a breakup is hard work, and even after you’ve moved past the grief and sadness, there are still other challenges that come with reentering the dating scene, Patrice Le Goy, PhD, LMFT, a Los Angeles–based couples therapist, tells SELF.

“You might feel insecure about how dating works, or have the fear of being intimate with a new person,” Dr. Le Goy says. “It can also feel awkward, or like you’re ‘cheating,’ when you share or do things with someone new after you’ve had a long-term partner.”

But when you’re finally feeling ready—excited even—to get back out there and explore your options, these pointers can make the transition feel a little more natural (and a lot less scary).

1. Make sure you’re actually ready to date again.

Signing up for dating apps with the sole purpose of making your ex jealous, say, or to avoid sleeping alone might not be the best idea. Because when you’re motivated by revenge or a fear of loneliness (rather than genuine interest or curiosity), it’s pretty damn hard to be emotionally available, which is necessary if you’re serious about moving on or even just having fun, Dr. Le Goy says.

So before you swipe right or agree to that blind date with your sibling’s cute coworker, check in with yourself to make sure you’re really ready to get back out there.

“Some signs include not feeling the need to constantly discuss and dissect your previous relationship,” Dr. Le Goy says. “This shows you’re not harbouring any lasting resentment or regrets that can linger into a new relationship.”

Another good indicator is just being excited to meet people—even if they don’t end up being “the one.” That means you’re open to exploring new connections, which is healthy “as long as you’re not relying on someone else to make you happy or fill a void,” Dr. Le Goy says. (Otherwise, you’re just setting yourself up for disappointment and putting unnecessary pressure on yourself and them.)

2. Think of dating as a learning opportunity—not just a way to replace your ex.

There’s a common misconception that dating is solely about finding a new partner or even just a fling for casual, fun sex. But you can still get something out of the experience—other than someone to move in (or just sleep) with, Gabriela Reyes, LMFT, a couples therapist at Coral Gables Counseling Center in Coral Gables, Florida, tells SELF.

Rather than having a specific end goal in mind, Reyes suggests a little perspective shift: “Opening yourself up to dating can put you in the headspace of, ‘I’m going to meet some cool people. Some of them are going to be a fun story to tell my friends later, and maybe one will be my next love interest, and I’m okay with both of those,’” she says,

So even if there’s no romantic spark, think of it this way: Maybe you’ve gained a new friend who shares your passion for watching professional tennis. Or you walked out of that awkward cafe meetup having discovered the perfect work-from-home spot. Seeing dating as an opportunity to experience and learn new things can make it fun—no matter how well (or poorly) the date itself goes.

3. Start with low-pressure date activities that you’d enjoy doing solo.

Unless you’re a gourmet food critic, that fine-dining French restaurant you’ve never been to probably isn’t the best place to feel relaxed with someone who’s basically a stranger. “First dates don’t have to be extravagant or out of your comfort zone,” Reyes says. “People always think they have to go out to a crowded bar, for example, even if they’re not the type of person to enjoy those things.”

To make an already unnerving situation a little less intimidating, stick to what you’re already comfortable with. “If you’re a foodie, go out to eat at the restaurants you would recommend to a friend,” Reyes suggests.

Or, if bookstores are your happy place, maybe sip tea in the cozy cafe inside Barnes & Noble (or an indie shop you love) and chat in the fiction aisle together. Being somewhere familiar can help you feel safer and more at ease during what’s probably a new and uncertain experience, she adds.

4. Don’t let one bad apple spoil your dating fun.

No matter how thorough you are in screening for red flags and making sure your Friday night dinner companion seems alright, chances are you’ll still experience at least one date from hell (like that jerk who made a fat joke or showed up an hour late). But as tempting as it is to call it quits for good, don’t throw in the towel just yet.

“Go into the dating process by trying to recognize that there are really wonderful people out there—and there are really shitty, awful ones too,” Reyes says. “Because realistically, your experiences might not all be good. They may be exhausting and leave you thinking of your ex more than ever.”

Acknowledging that not every encounter will be rom-com worthy can help you set realistic expectations and prevent you from being blindsided or discouraged, Dr. Le Goy adds. Besides, even a terrible date can teach you about your deal-breakers (like someone who’s always on their phone, perhaps)—which, on the bright side, gets you one step closer to finding someone who ticks all your boxes.

5. Try not to compare your dates to your past relationship.

It’s tempting to tally up all your ex’s pros and cons and weigh them against your next potential partner. Well, this person looks like my ex, but they’re not quite as tall. Or, They’re ambitious like my ex, but don’t seem as far along in their career.

Playing the compare and contrast game is just going to make it harder to meet “the one,” who might bring different, yes, but still amazing qualities to the table, Dr. Le Goy says.

“It’s helpful to consider the good and challenging parts of your previous relationship in order to decide what’s best for you going forward,” she adds.

But that means reflecting on whether or not you want someone who has a gruelling work schedule like your last partner, for example, or if you’d do long-distance again—not dismissing someone just because they’re not texting you as frequently, say, or don’t show up with chocolates like your ex. Otherwise, you’re just going to be anchored in the past—and isn’t moving on what you’re aiming for?

6. Prepare a little cheat sheet of conversation sparkers on your phone’s notes app.

When you’ve been with who you thought was your soulmate for years, conversations just flow naturally—whether it’s the boring details of your day or those deep, late-night talks about your life goals and dreams. It’s no wonder, then, that keeping the small talk going with someone completely new can be uncomfortable.

“First dates can be really nerve-wracking, and you might not feel like yourself in those moments,” Reyes says. To avoid drawing a complete blank, it can be helpful to come up with a few topics and questions for the person you’re seeing, by either making a mental list or jotting them down on your notes app. The goal isn’t to grill your date like it’s a formal interview. Actually, this list is for you—to discover what you genuinely want to know and prioritize for your next potential romance or fling, she says.

So for example, if you love to travel, ask them about their favorite country they’ve visited or their dream vacation. Or if you’re a major Swiftie and pop culture nerd, casually bring up the Eras tour or the latest Bachelor drama to see if they share your enthusiasm.

It’s normal to default to topics like the weather or their weekend plans (especially if you’re nervous), but if small talk doesn’t feel natural to you, Reyes suggests skipping it. “You really want to go in there feeling like you’re being genuine, like you’re being yourself, because you want to attract the kind of person that likes the real you,” Reyes adds.

7. Remember that it’s okay to be honest.

Speaking of authenticity, you don’t have to pretend like you’re single and ready to mingle if, in reality, you’re in total panic mode. “It’s perfectly fine to own that feeling and tell a date that you’re new to this scene and not totally comfortable,” Dr. Le Goy says. “That’s nothing to be ashamed of.”

Being upfront can actually be a win-win: They might appreciate your honesty and feel better knowing why you’re so quiet or standoffish (and hey—maybe they’re kind of anxious too!). Keeping it real can also help you relax a little, without the pressure of keeping up a façade, she adds. Plus, if you can’t be yourself with someone, what’s the point?

United Nations, partners to roll out “I Pledge for Peace Campaign” ahead of elections

0

Accra, April 15, GNA – The United Nations office in Ghana in collaboration with the National Peace Council is to roll out the “I Pledge for Peace Campaign” in April ahead of the polls in December.

This is contained in a press release signed by Faith Junko Edison, the Head of Public Relations, National Peace Council, and Cynthia Prah, the National Information Officer for the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC).

The campaign, according to Mr. Charles Abani, the UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana, would actively engage a diverse range of stakeholders, including individuals, communities, civil society organizations, government entities, religious leaders, and youth groups.

Its primary goal is to foster a culture of peace, advocate peaceful elections, and promote tolerance and peaceful co-existence before, during, and after the electoral process.

“… Elections are not a period of combat and the unhealthy exchange of views or for divisive language. We want to use this campaign to urge stakeholders to publicly commit to peace, and by extension, a peaceful election. We believe that the positive actions of stakeholders, through social media and other channels, will encourage tolerance and discourage misinformation”, he noted.

The campaign, he explained, would encourage individuals and organisations to make public pledges for peace, amplifying the message via communication channels, including social media with the aim to create a collective commitment to a peaceful election.

Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman of the National Peace Council, also underscored the importance of individual contributions to peace through the spread of messages that encouraged such.

“Until every life is respected, and properties protected, achieving peaceful co-existence remains a distant goal… the National Peace Council will do everything in its power to support this campaign and ensure a peaceful election come December 2024,” he said.

Ghana’s democracy though has deficits, remains a beacon of hope for Africa.

The UN said it would continue to support the country to foster its development agenda in a peaceful atmosphere and uphold its reputation as a regional pacesetter for democratic governance.

The “I Pledge for Peace Campaign” thus reflects this collaborative effort between the UN, the National Peace Council and other various stakeholders to create a peaceful and inclusive electoral process in Ghana.

Unlocking Africa’s potential through agrifood systems transformation and capacity building –

0

Africa holds the key to moving towards a world free from hunger and poverty. It is in Africa where enormous gains can be made, and agrifood systems transformation is the definitive foundation for the continent to realize sustainable development and modernization.

This month, Ministers of Agriculture from across Africa will meet in Morocco for the 33rd Session of the FAO Regional Ministerial Conference for Africa (ARC33) on 18-20 April.

It is a pivotal moment for collective action. I urge African nations to seize the momentum of agrifood systems transformation to unlock benefits across food security and nutrition, the economy and equality, the environment and resilience.

At FAO, we have outlined our strategic vision for the years ahead through the FAO Strategic Framework 2022-2031 which centres on the Four Betters: better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.

The Four Betters are not just a vision, they are a call to action. They are the pathways through which countries can transform agrifood systems to be more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient, and more sustainable to deliver on the commitments of the Sustainable Development Goals and the post-Malabo agenda.

By encouraging better production through such means as mechanization, digitalization, agrifood industrialization and green-powered irrigation, African nations can boost productivity and efficiency, and enhance resilience to the climate crisis.

More than 1 billion Africans cannot afford a healthy diet, and this is simply unacceptable. By encouraging better nutrition, FAO is working with countries and other partners to make healthy diets affordable and accessible for all.

A better environment is essential for Africa’s living conditions and long-term future. Actions such as those under the Great Green Wall and FAO’s Green Cities Initiative are helping to reclaim degraded land, promote sustainable land use, adapt to the climate crisis and support sustainable urban food systems.

A better life for all can be achieved through addressing forced migration, inclusive rural transformation, women’s empowerment and creating meaningful work opportunities with and for Africa’s youth. By leaving no one behind, we can build a more equitable and prosperous Africa for everyone.

Africa is a continent of tremendous opportunity. Africa dominates the list of the world’s 20 fastest-growing economies, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) holds the promise of boosting intra-African trade and stimulating economic growth even further.

The continent is rich in natural resources. It also has the largest share of arable land, and its growing youth population holds vast yet not fully realized capabilities, particularly as agents of change and early adopters of technologies and innovations.

Conflict is a major obstacle to progress. Peace and stability are essential for sustainable development, and FAO is committed to supporting efforts to reduce conflicts, particularly those triggered by competition over natural resources, and build resilience in the face of adversity. By addressing the root causes of hunger and poverty, we can lay the groundwork for lasting peace and prosperity.

Peace is a prerequisite for food security and the Right to Food is a basic human right.

The climate crisis also cannot be ignored. Agrifood systems transformation offers not only an opportunity to mitigate the impacts of a changing climate, but to reverse some of the damage already done.

The FAO Regional Ministerial Conference for Africa provides one of the main continental platforms for African governments to share their perspectives and experience on implementing agrifood systems transformation and building capacity.

Morocco stands as an inspiration in this area. The nation has demonstrated remarkable progress in advancing the agricultural sector as a key driver of economic growth. Morocco’s modernization and diversification of agricultural production exemplifies its leadership in the region, as does its Salon International de l’Agriculture au Maroc (SIAM), to be held immediately after ARC33.

If we are to course correct in Africa, it requires doing things differently. Solutions from science, digital technology and innovation offer exciting potential. Success requires a collective effort from governments, civil society organizations, the private sector, UN partners, and local communities. Consultations with civil society, including farmers’ organizations, and with the private sector, were held in February and March. Their recommendations will help shape discussions at the Conference.

Success also relies on strategic partnerships and greater investments. Through FAO’s Hand-in-Hand Initiative we are brokering strategic partnerships between countries and investors to unblock bottlenecks in agricultural production and trade. In the last biennium, FAO mobilized more than USD900 million for agrifood systems in Africa, more than 60 percent above our target. This biennium we aim even higher.

Often, Africa presents two faces to the world: one characterized by stereotypes of poverty and hunger, and the other, an authentic reflection of this richly diverse and vibrant continent.

By harnessing the power of science and technology, enabling policies and responsible investment, African nations can unlock the true face of the continent: a land of abundance, of resilience, dynamic, and of opportunity.

Let us embrace this face and work together on agrifood systems transformation for better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.

I got married because I thought it’s what I was supposed to do — not because I loved my husband

We all know staying in a marriage for the long haul is a challenge. It’s no surprise that over the past decade, we’ve seen more and more young couples entering into marriage with no intention to love, honour, and cherish each other until death.

If one of them gets bored, falls out of love, or simply grows out of the relationship, it’s easy to make a quick, clean break. No children, no court battle, no problem. If your first marriage began in your 20’s, ended in less than 5 years, and produced no children, chances are it was a “starter marriage.”

Why bother with the hassle, expense, and emotional fall-out of getting married in the first place if you thought there was a chance it wasn’t going to last? We wanted to know more about why a woman would take a “starter husband,” so we sat down with Rebecca* a 34-year-old graphic artist who recounts her starter marriage, subsequent divorce, and how she bounced back from the experience.

Rebecca recalls how she joyfully raced down the aisle at age 26. “It was as if Publisher’s Clearing House was waiting at the altar with a million-dollar check. I was so eager to say, ‘I do!  In hindsight, getting married felt kind of like winning a contest. I got to wear a princess gown. I got to dance at the ball. And most importantly, I was acquiring a Prince Charming. I was indeed the envy of my friends.”

The wedding was just how she had imagined it .…a fairytale day that required at least a year of planning.

According to Rebecca, “I was fulfilling a wish list, but now I realize it wasn’t mine. Everyone told me how lucky I was, and what a great guy he was. Looking back, I got married because it was what everyone wanted and what I was supposed to want. So down the aisle, I went! Lovely heirloom china pattern? Check. Monogrammed towels? Check. Husband I wanted to love and cherish until DEATH? I was too caught up with my “things-to-do-before-30” list … I never gave the ‘love’ thing enough thought.”

The honeymoon was nice, but Rebecca now admits she secretly felt guilty knowing she would’ve had a better time with her girlfriends. The more time she spent with her newlywed husband, the less interesting he seemed. As the weeks turned into months, she began to wonder if she was ever really in love with her husband.

Rebecca became more restless, and her husband grew distant. A few anniversaries passed, and their relationship degenerated into nothing more than a daily exchange of boring pleasantries reserved for roommates.

When I ask about her ex-husband, Rebecca pauses for a moment and then remorsefully replies, “During that time, I was consumed with guilt. I had vowed to love a man I now had realized I never loved at all but married him because I thought it was what I was supposed to do. I didn’t want to hurt him, and he hadn’t done anything to deserve having his heart broken.”

“He was a nice enough guy, but when you get down to it, neither of us had a thing in common. Most days, it felt like we were each going in a different direction, further and further away from the life I had envisioned together. I needed something more, something different. Unfortunately, I didn’t know what I wanted, until I knew what I didn’t want … does that make sense?”

Trapped in what she calls “a loveless prison of social convention,” Rebecca needed out. “Our wedding day now seemed like the culmination of one really bad idea. I hoped my husband would be the first to say the marriage was over, but he didn’t.”

She began sabotaging her marriage with more late nights at work, more dinners with friends, and even a separate vacation here and there. “You start taking yourself out of the equation. Your love life becomes a minefield of complicated issues too overwhelming to deal with. Bottom line, less intimacy equals more hostility, which equals even less intimacy.”

Although it’s been 4 years since her divorce was finalized, Rebecca tells what happened on New Year’s Eve during her 3rd year of marriage as though it happened yesterday. “Maybe it was the new year approaching, maybe it was all the talk about resolutions and new beginnings, but mostly I think it was seeing him sitting on the couch in the same sweatpants he had on the year before.

“We were supposed to be getting ready for a party that night but we never made it. I had prolonged the inevitable, but it was time to tell him ‘I want a divorce. And as soon as those 4 words entered the universe, a wave of relief washed completely over me. I was free to live a life I would choose for myself.”

As divorce proceedings rolled into motion, family and friends gave their condolences. “They all assumed I was a shattered mess, but truthfully, I was happier than I had been in years. Did I feel guilty? Somewhat, but I don’t regret the marriage. I learned invaluable life lessons about living authentically and on my timeline. I’m no longer a slave to someone else’s standards and expectations.”

This is a tale told by many upwardly mobile young women who (often unintentionally) use these short early marriages as emotional and sometimes financial stepping stones. Rebecca’s story doesn’t end there.

While she stands by her decision to leave her marriage and is happily involved with a new man, she concedes that the divorce process was a gut-wrenching experience. There was a long drawn-out court battle over some investment properties, and her once loving, easy-going husband became a bitter adversary who made it his mission to bury her financially.

She says she’s still bouncing back from it all and has sought help from financial advisors and online divorce support groups. “I take it one day at a time,” Rebecca says.

“Starter marriages” may sound in vogue, but divorce is still divorce, and the same rules apply in the aftermath. Bouncing back from a divorce is always difficult — even if the marriage was short, childless, and you’re still in your mid-20s.

You are not any less entitled to feel heartbroken, even if you were the one who wanted out. It’s imperative to take time for yourself, heal your emotional wounds, and avoid rebounding into any unhealthy relationships.

In a “me” generation of notoriously non-committal 20-somethings, some experts say it’s no surprise that the mentality is to bail out of a miserable marriage, rather than fix it. On the flip side, many young divorcees argue there is tremendous value in trying on a first marriage for size.

A starter marriage can be a great way to learn what you want from a spouse, from a marriage, and what you can expect from yourself.

The role of a carefully defined investment objective –

0

Today, let’s delve into the importance of establishing an investment objective for your investment portfolio. The investment objective holds paramount significance in investors’ overall financial goals, serving as a guiding principle that aids investors in aligning their investment decisions with their financial needs, risk tolerance, and time horizon.

Unfortunately, many investors in our region overlook the importance of defining their investment objectives before embarking on investment ventures. Below, we outline several reasons why the investment objective is pivotal to the overall performance of an investor’s portfolio:

✓ Clarity and Focus: Establishing an investment objective provides clarity and focus to investors, enabling them to articulate their financial goals and priorities effectively. Whether the objective pertains to wealth preservation, capital appreciation, income generation, or a blend of these goals, having a clear investment objective empowers investors to devise a strategic roadmap for attaining their desired outcomes.

✓ Risk Management: The investment objective aids investors in evaluating and managing their risk tolerance adeptly. By delineating their risk preferences and constraints upfront, investors can construct a diversified investment portfolio that strikes a balance between risk and return in accordance with their risk appetite. For instance, investors with a conservative objective may prioritize capital preservation and opt for low-risk investment avenues, while those with a growth objective may embrace higher levels of risk in pursuit of superior returns.

✓ Asset Allocation: The investment objective steers asset allocation decisions by determining the optimal mix of asset classes (e.g., stocks, bonds, real estate) and investment strategies that resonate with the investor’s goals and risk profile. Asset allocation stands as a pivotal determinant of portfolio performance and risk, and aligning asset allocation with the investment objective can augment portfolio efficiency and resilience across diverse market conditions.

✓ Investment Selection: The investment objective shapes investment selection decisions by guiding the selection of specific investments, securities, or financial products conducive to achieving the desired investment outcomes. For instance, investors with an income objective may gravitate towards dividend-paying stocks, bonds, or income-oriented funds, while those with a growth objective may favor growth stocks, equity mutual funds, or alternative investments.

✓ Performance Evaluation: Serving as a benchmark for evaluating investment performance, the investment objective facilitates monitoring progress towards achieving financial goals over time. Through juxtaposing actual investment returns against target objectives, investors can gauge the efficacy of their investment strategy, make necessary adjustments, and stay on course towards realizing their long-term financial objectives.

✓ Communication and Collaboration: Clearly defining the investment objective fosters seamless communication and collaboration between investors and their financial advisors or investment professionals. It enables advisors to tailor investment recommendations and strategies to meet the specific needs and preferences of their clients, nurturing a collaborative relationship grounded on mutual understanding and alignment of objectives.

In summary, the investment objective assumes a pivotal role in guiding investors’ decision-making processes, risk management endeavors, portfolio optimization strategies, performance evaluation metrics, and attainment of long-term financial prosperity. By establishing a clear investment objective reflective of their financial goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon, investors can make well-informed investment decisions aligned with their overarching investment aspirations and objectives.

There’s nothing wrong with renaming AMERI to Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant – IES –

0

Following the brouhaha surrounding the renaming of the Africa and Middle East Resource Investment (AMERI) Power Plant to Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant, the Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII, has indicated that there is nothing wrong with the move taken by government.

According to him, the exercise, yet to be undertaken by the Volta River Authority could be traced in its naming patterns of power plants.

Speaking on the growing development on Accra-based TV3 on Monday, April 15, 2024, Nana Amoasi VII said, “There is absolutely nothing wrong with renaming AMERI.”

He explained that the initial name of the power plant was attributed to the group of people who brought them to Ghana.

The Executive Director of IES also noted that the plant have been handed over to the Government of Ghana after an agreement to bring them under a build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) arrangement.

“They agreed that they will bring the plants under a build, own, operate and transfer arrangement…the plants have been transferred to Ghana after five years of operation. And so it is no more owned in any shape by the African Middle East and Resource Investment Company,” he stated.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) in a Facebook post announced plans for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to commission the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant at Anwomaso in the Ashanti Region.

Reacting to this, the Director of the Legal Directorate for the National Democratic Congress, Godwin Edudzi Tameklo said the renaming of the power plant was a deliberate ploy to deceive Ghanaians.

He noted that the AMERI power plant which was initially procured by former President John Dramani Mahama, was aimed at addressing the country’s enduring power challenges,

Government on February 1, 2021 resumed ownership of the 250-megawatt (MW) Africa and Middle East Resource Investment (AMERI) thermal power plant according to terms of the deal.

The Dubai-based firm arrived in the country back in October 2015 to assist in resolving the power crisis at the time.

An agreement was then signed by the erstwhile John Mahama government at a total cost of US$510 million on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis.

Ghana to adjust external bond deal to meet IMF debt sustainability goals

0

The Ministry of Finance has clarified that despite reaching an interim agreement with external bondholders, Ghana still needs to adjust the deal to meet the debt sustainability targets set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The reassurance from the Finance Ministry comes amid concerns from certain economic sectors that Ghana has not successfully reached an agreement with two bondholder groups to restructure $13 billion of international bonds.

The Ministry explained that negotiations have temporarily stalled due to indications from the IMF that the proposed deal does not align with its debt sustainability parameters, which determine the manageable level of debt for a country.

On Monday, April 15, the Office of the Finance Minister announced their intention to continue negotiations until a deal consistent with IMF debt sustainability targets is reached, via X, formerly known as Twitter.

“Update on External Debt Operations: Ghana and Bondholders reached an interim deal, which must still be tweaked to meet IMF debt sustainability targets. We will therefore regroup to continue negotiations until we reach a deal that is consistent with IMF debt sustainability targets.”

Fifi Kwetey’s speech on alleged theft of biometric equipment at EC Headquarters

0

Fifi Kwetey’

Ladies and gentlemen of the media, distinguished guests, and fellow citizens of Ghana thank you for your prompt response to our call. Today, we stand on the precipice of a national crisis, one that threatens the very core of our democracy and the sanctity of our forthcoming elections.

We are not here to mince words. The recent theft of critical biometric equipment under the supposed ‘secure’ watch of the Electoral Commission is not just an alarming oversight; it is a clear and present danger to our electoral integrity.

This is not a trivial matter of misplaced property—it is a dire warning that our electoral safeguards are being compromised under our very noses.

How can we place our trust in an Electoral Commission that fails to safeguard the very equipment essential to fulfilling its mandate in a transparent and accountable manner? How can we stand by while the very mechanisms meant to guarantee fair play are stolen away, possibly skewing the electoral landscape in favour of those currently clutching the reins of power?

This is an outright assault on our rights as voters and on the democratic principles that our forebears fought tirelessly to establish. The lackadaisical attitude and dismissive responses from the EC officials in the face of such a breach are unacceptable and insult the intelligence of every Ghanaian.

We demand immediate and decisive action from the Electoral Commission. The time for excuses is over; the time for transparency, accountability, and rectification is now. Ghana is watching, and the world is watching. The integrity of our elections and the future of our democracy hang in the balance. Let us be clear: we will accept nothing less than a full restoration of total security for all EC logistical equipment for the upcoming elections, a thorough investigation, and complete accountability. Anything short of this is an affront to our nation’s future.

We are gathered here today not just to express our outrage but to ignite a collective demand for immediate and sweeping corrective measures. The Electoral Commission must act, and it must act now!

Before we discuss the substantive issues, I want to publicly appreciate the patriotic Ghanaian whistleblowers across various sectors who provide the NDC with vital information about blatant aberrations, abuse of power, and organised thievery within the public sector under the non-performing Akufo-Addo Bawumia government.

We all know how this non-performing and incompetent NPP government has inflicted unprecedented hardships on Ghanaians. With the staggering levels of unemployment, high inflation, a dislodged exchange rate, hikes in transportation fares and fuel prices, excruciating port charges and taxes, and crude financial haircuts that continue to impact pensioners and the middle class in particular, one would have expected the NPP government to have resigned to fate and begun preparing their handing-over notes.

But not this NPP government! How unfortunate?

They are bent on hanging onto power at all costs! But they will fail!

The government has taken deliberate “strategic” steps toward their ignominious goal of winning elections at all costs by ensuring institutional decay in our dear country. They have appointed rabidly partisan and biased members of the NPP to independent institutions such as the judiciary and the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana.

Therefore, ladies and gentlemen, it is unsurprising to the NDC, and we believe to many decent-minded Ghanaians, that significant components of the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits could be stolen at the headquarters of the Electoral Commission of Ghana under lock with CCTV surveillance.

We wish to emphasize that, but for the vigilance of a courageous whistleblower who alerted the NDC, and the subsequent probing by our parliamentarians in Parliament, the shocking theft of crucial biometric equipment at the EC’s heavily surveilled headquarters would have remained shrouded in secrecy. This raises deeply troubling questions: Why did the Electoral Commission not disclose this significant breach of security? What prevented them from being upfront with the political parties, the Ghanaian public, and our development partners about such a critical incident?

How can we trust an institution, tasked with safeguarding the sanctity of our electoral process, when it conceals such vital information? Is this not indicative of a lack of goodwill or, perhaps, something more sinister? Does the EC not owe the very stakeholders it serves—the citizens of Ghana—complete transparency and accountability?

As the situation stands, there is a startling absence of verifiable evidence that this theft was even reported to national security or the police, as claimed by the EC. No transparency, and no respect for the stakeholders. One must ask, why the silence? Why the secrecy? If the integrity of our electoral processes is to be preserved, shouldn’t the Electoral Commission be the first to champion openness and swift communication about any threats to this integrity?

We demand answers, and we demand accountability. The Electoral Commission must explain its inaction and its choice to withhold information critical to the trust and confidence in our electoral system. The stakes are too high for such negligence or, worse, deliberate obfuscation.

Ladies and gentlemen, since the last meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on Tuesday, April 09, 2024, and our subsequent engagements with the press, we have received new and additional information on the theft of the components of the Biometric Voters Registration (BVR) kits.

We have also become aware that this new and additional information is not unknown to officials at the top echelons of the Electoral Commission. As a result, we remain convinced that the Electoral Commission and those with powers of prosecution were and have remained ill-prepared to pursue this theft case to its logical conclusion.

This being the case, we wish to share with you the thirty-five (35) questions posed to the EC at the last IPAC meeting with the hope that by working together, enough pressure will be exerted on the EC and their collaborators within the security agencies to speak the truth about this theft which occurred under CCTV surveillance at the headquarters of the EC.

We need the truth to aid investigation and prosecution and also to prevent recurrence as we head into the December 7, 2024, presidential and parliamentary elections. We cannot have free, fair, and transparent elections when there are doubts about the sanctity of the data and equipment of the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

Before I list the questions, let me state without ambiguity that we demand a thorough unbiased independent investigation of this theft case including an independent audit of the IT system of the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

Ladies and gentlemen, the 35 questions posed to the EC at the IPAC meeting are as follows

Status and particulars of the stolen components of the Biometric Voter Registration Kits

1. Have the missing kits been found?

2. If so, when (date & time) and where were they found? How were the missing items discovered?
3. How many kits are missing and cannot be found or traced?

4. What are the serial numbers of the kits under discussion?

5. Does the EC have the purchasing invoices together with serial numbers at the time of purchase of the missing items?

6. Did the EC have an official recorded inventory of the missing items prior to the theft?

7. Is there a present inventory of such sensitive items to aid a comprehensive inquiry that can allay the fears of stakeholders?

Investigation, Arrest and Prosecution

8. When (date & time using CCTV) did the EC become aware that the items were missing, did the EC hold an immediate/emergency formal meeting to discuss the missing items?

9. If yes: (a) who attended that meeting?

(b) Are there minutes of that meeting?

(c) was it resolved at that meeting to report to the police?

10. If it was reported to the police, what is the time lapse between the discovery of the
theft and the report to the police?

11. Who in the EC made the report to the police?

12. Is there a formal extract of the report to the police?

13. What is the status of the report?

14. Is there a weekly/regular briefing on the status of the report?

15. Has the EC received any statements or reports from the persons with personal charge of the kits regarding the loss of the kits? Kindly provide us copies of the statements or reports, if any.

16. Did the police arrest the culprit(s)? Is or are the culprit(s) on bail? Is or are the culprit(s) still in Ghana?

Possible Compromise of Voters’ Data

17. When was the last time these kits were deployed for purposes of voter registration?

18. Where were the kits kept before they were deployed?

19. Which registration stations used the missing kits?

20. Who specifically was/were in charge of the kits when they were last deployed for
registration?

21. Did the missing kits contain any data of voters and EC apps?

22. If yes, does the EC have backups for the data stored on the missing kits?

23. If yes, had the data already been transferred either manually or electronically to the National Voters Register for purposes of voting in the future?

Preventing Recurrence

24. What are the protocols for storing such devices at the EC headquarters?
25. Were these protocols followed for the missing items?

26. Who is personally responsible for the safekeeping of these items?

27. The individuals responsible for these items, are they permanent or temporary EC staff?

28. If temporary staff, how long have they worked for the EC?

Ladies and gentlemen, the remaining seven (7) questions making thirty-five (35) questions in all, relate to missing Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs). Not Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) Kits.

We wish to request that in reporting, you distinguish between BVRs and BVDs! For emphasis, BVRs and BVDs are not the same.

This must be clear in our minds because the failure to make this important distinction allows the EC to throw dust into the eyes of many unsuspecting followers of this case.

Before we proceed further, let me clarify the differences between these pieces of equipment. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for our comprehension of the issues at hand. Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits and Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) serve different roles in our electoral process, and their security directly impacts the integrity of our elections.

BVR kits are primarily utilized for voter registration. This is when new voters are enrolled, and existing registrations are updated. These kits are integral for capturing and securely storing individual biometric data—such as fingerprints and facial photographs—along with other personal details in a central electoral database. This process typically occurs months or even years before an election and is crucial for ensuring that each voter has a unique record. This not only prevents duplicate registrations but also potential electoral fraud.

In stark contrast, BVDs are deployed on election day to verify the identities of voters at polling stations. These devices, more compact than BVR kits, typically include a fingerprint scanner and a screen to display the voter’s details once their identity is confirmed. This verification ensures that the person voting matches the previously registered information, maintaining the integrity of the electoral process. It confirms each voter’s identity in real time, preventing identity fraud and ensuring that each person votes only once.

Understanding these key differences—the timing of their use and their primary functions—is essential. BVR kits are used during the voter registration phase to create accurate and credible voter records, while BVDs are employed on the day of voting specifically for identity verification. This dual approach contributes effectively to different phases of the electoral process: BVR kits establish a credible voter database, and BVDs ensure the integrity of the actual voting process.

Together, BVR kits and BVDs form a robust framework designed to protect our electoral process and uphold its credibility. However, when components of this critical infrastructure are compromised or stolen, as we have seen, it poses a severe threat not just to the logistics of the EC on election day, but to the very foundation of our democratic rights. That is why the theft of these kits from under the watchful eyes of the EC’s surveillance cannot be taken lightly and must be addressed with the utmost seriousness and urgency.

Ladies and gentlemen, contrary to the EC’s public rebuttal that no Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) were missing, the EC has now admitted and disclosed that, in truth, some Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) are indeed missing! How then can we trust the integrity of the Electoral Commission when their initial denials are so blatantly contradicted by their later admissions at IPAC? What else might they be misleading us about?

Here is the alarming revelation, ladies and gentlemen: not only do we have stolen components of Biometric Voters Registration (BVRs) kits on our hands, but we are also dealing with missing Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs). This disclosure was made at the IPAC meeting on Tuesday, April 09, 2024, by the EC when they briefed stakeholders “…on The commission’s biometric equipment.”

Regarding the missing and un-retrieved Biometric Verification Devices (BVD) the NDC indicated at the IPAC meeting that many of the questions raised about the stolen components of the registration kits applied to the BVDs. Specifically, Ghanaians also needed answers to the following questions about the missing BVDs:

Question 29. Have all un-retrieved/missing BVDs been returned to the EC headquarters?

30. What are the serial numbers of these BVDs?

31. Which polling stations were the BVDs deployed to?

32. What are the names of the persons who were in charge of the BVDs when the BVDs were last deployed to polling stations?

33. What are the protocols for the deployment of BVDs to polling stations?

34. Were these protocols adhered to in respect of the missing BVDs?

35. Who has personal responsibility for the safe custody and return of BVDs deployed to polling stations?

In light of these bizarre circumstances, the Electoral Commission (EC) must address these urgent and critical questions immediately. The inaction and lack of transparency we’ve observed are not only unacceptable but deeply concerning. We, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), along with the citizens of Ghana, demand prompt and comprehensive responses to the questions we have laid out

Now let me address a matter of grave concern regarding the technical and security implications of the stolen or missing biometric equipment. Over time, some top officials and commissioners of the EC have made pronouncements that are not only weak and inadequate but also indicative of a troubling lack of understanding of the complexities of electoral security and their broader implications by the very commissioners of the EC who are supposed to be knowledgeable and act appropriately.

The assertion that the laptops contain no EC information and thus their theft poses no risk or impact apart from their financial loss was first made by Mr. Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations at the EC, and was repeated by Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, Director of Electoral Services, over the weekend on the Joy News File political program. They claim that the laptops are merely components of the BVR kits and can only interact or interfere with the EC’s database system when they are activated with activation codes. Therefore, the stolen laptops will have no implications since no one will be able to activate them.

Firstly, this erroneous narrative provided by Dr Serebour Quaicoe and Mr Tetteh, in their attempt to justify their inactions over the theft case by suggesting that the stolen laptops are inconsequential, betrays a worrying level of complacency and reveals EC commissioners who lack a fundamental understanding of electoral integrity mechanisms and their security implications. Their assertions are not only weak and shallow but also dangerously misleading and naive.

The need for an activation code, while a critical layer of security, is not infallible. Therefore, the focus on activation codes as the sole line of defence illustrates a grave misunderstanding of cybersecurity principles. How secure are these activation codes? Who manages them, and what protocols are in place to prevent their unauthorized dissemination? In cybersecurity, human error or malfeasance is often the greatest risk. It is not uncommon for internal threats or human errors to lead to security breaches. Can the EC guarantee that these activation codes have never been, and will never be, compromised?

Furthermore, the fact that these laptops have undergone the ‘End of Life’ process does not mitigate the risk they pose if acquired by malicious actors. Why? Because the physical laptops themselves, once part of the EC’s infrastructure, can serve as a blueprint. They can be dissected for hardware vulnerabilities, used in reverse engineering to uncover software flaws, or employed in setting up parallel systems to undermine electoral processes. How can the EC overlook such a basic tenet of cybersecurity?

Moreover, these devices, even stripped of direct electoral data, could potentially be used to create counterfeit systems or to train individuals in manipulating similar devices. In cybersecurity, access to physical devices provides critical insights into system operations, which can be exploited in numerous ways. Are we to believe that such risks are of no concern?

Let us consider the potential for these devices to be utilized in staging mock setups to test hacking strategies or to train personnel in circumventing security measures. The theft of such laptops must be seen as a direct threat to the integrity and security of our entire electoral system. It begs the question: if basic physical security cannot be maintained, how can we trust the EC to safeguard the sanctity of our electoral process?

The Dire Consequences of the Stolen Laptops

Ladies and gentlemen, the theft of the five BVR laptops from the Electoral Commission is not a trivial matter to be dismissed as a mere financial loss by the EC. The stolen laptops reveal profound vulnerabilities and pose dire consequences for the integrity of our electoral system, which we cannot afford to overlook or underestimate.

The cavalier dismissal of this theft by the EC as merely a financial loss is not only shortsighted but also reflective of a perilous disregard for the broader implications on our electoral integrity. How can we stand by when critical and sensitive equipment, entrusted to the EC and under 24/7 CCTV surveillance to conduct free and fair elections, is treated with such negligence? These pieces of equipment are essential and carry a national security risk, which is precisely why they are monitored continuously. How then can such critical assets be compromised under constant watch?

These stolen laptops represent a significant breach in the security protocols of the Electoral Commission, which suggests possible vulnerabilities that could be exploited during the actual elections. We must ask ourselves—and demand answers from the EC—about the potential for these devices to be used in crafting nefarious means to manipulate voter data or to clone voter registration processes. Is this not a recipe for electoral disaster that could question the very legitimacy of our governance?

Moreover, this incident casts a long and ominous shadow over the credibility and trustworthiness of the Electoral Commission itself. How can the Ghanaian people trust that the elections of December 2024 will be free from manipulation when the basic security of critical equipment cannot be guaranteed? Are we to simply trust, without question, in the face of such glaring lapses?

Let us consider the implications of this theft not as isolated incidents but as indicators of potentially broader systemic vulnerabilities that could be exploited to alter electoral outcomes. Each laptop, each piece of equipment in the EC’s inventory, holds the potential to influence the electoral process significantly. The theft of such devices raises critical questions about the possibility of insider threats or external breaches, which could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive systems.

In response to this breach, the assurances provided by the Electoral Commission’s officials are not only inadequate but also demonstrate a troubling lack of understanding of the complexities and necessities of robust electoral security. Their assurances do not suffice in the face of potential electoral tampering or fraud. We cannot and must not accept this.

We demand, with utmost urgency, a full and transparent investigation into the theft, conducted with oversight from credible, independent international bodies. We further call for a comprehensive review and overhaul of all security protocols within the EC to ensure such breaches cannot occur in the future.

The integrity of the Electoral Commission—and by extension, the democratic integrity of Ghana—must not be compromised. We stand before you today to declare that nothing less than a rigorous, transparent, and secure electoral process is acceptable. Our democracy, the will of the Ghanaian people, and the future stability of our nation depend on it.

We remain vigilant and unyieldingly committed to safeguarding democracy in Ghana. Let us move forward with resolve and caution, ensuring that every measure is taken to secure our electoral process, one that reflects the true will of the people. This is not just about the security of laptops but the sanctity of our vote.

Conclusion

Ladies and gentlemen, as we stand on the brink of an electoral crisis precipitated by the baffling theft of crucial biometric equipment under the ostensibly vigilant eyes of the Electoral Commission (EC), the gravity of this situation cannot be overstated. The inaction and opacity displayed by the EC not only jeopardize the integrity of our upcoming elections but also erode the very foundations of trust and democracy upon which our nation is built.

The consequences of the EC’s inaction are profound and far-reaching. Each day that passes without a clear resolution and accountability only deepens the public’s distrust and casts long shadows over the fairness and transparency of our electoral process. The EC’s failure to act swiftly and decisively in this critical moment could lead to an electoral process fraught with skepticism and questions of legitimacy, which Ghana can ill afford at such a pivotal juncture in our democratic journey.

In response to this dire situation, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has laid out clear and non-negotiable demands to ensure the sanctity of our electoral system is preserved and restored:

  1. An official written response to the 35 critical questions posed by the NDC at the IPAC meeting, addressing the status, recovery efforts, and oversight regarding the stolen biometric equipment.
  2. We demand an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the theft of the BVR laptops and related biometric equipment including a forensic audit of the voters register. This investigation must be conducted by an independent body, supplemented with international observers, to ensure neutrality and thoroughness. The outcome must provide a detailed report that not only comprehensively identifies those actually responsible but also outlines significant corrective measures to prevent such breaches in the future.
  3. Furthermore, we call for a complete audit of the EC’s inventory and security measures. This audit should encompass all BVR and BVD equipment and must be carried out by an independent auditor to verify the integrity of all electoral materials and processes.

Let me be unequivocal: these are not merely requests; they are demands echoing the will of the people for a transparent, fair, and secure electoral process. The eyes of the nation, and indeed the international community, are firmly fixed on the actions of the Electoral Commission. How the EC responds to this crisis will not only determine the credibility of the forthcoming elections but also define the future of democracy in Ghana.

We stand ready to hold the Electoral Commission accountable, to challenge every inconsistency, and to confront any obfuscation. The NDC, alongside the citizens of Ghana, will accept nothing less than full transparency, immediate action, and concrete solutions to this egregious breach of electoral security. The time for action is now; the future of Ghana’s democracy is in the balance, and we will settle for nothing less than stringent safeguards that ensure every Ghanaian’s vote is counted and protected.

Ladies and gentlemen, as we forge ahead, the NDC and Ghanaians will not be swayed by mere assurances based on nothing by the EC. We will continue to demand action, enforce accountability, and ensure that our electoral system is not only secure but beyond reproach. Our resolve is firm, our commitment is unwavering, and our demands are clear. The Electoral Commission must act, and they must act now.

This is a defining moment for our democracy, and the NDC is fully mobilized to ensure that the right prevails. We are alert, we are prepared, and we are uncompromising. The EC must do the right thing, and they must do it now. Let this be a warning: the eyes of the nation, and the world, are watching.

Thank you all. God bless our homeland Ghana!!!

Interim debt deal with bondholders will undergo tweaks to meet IMF targets – Finance Ministry –

0

The Ministry of Finance has said Ghana and its international bondholders had reached an interim agreement towards the restructuring of about $13 billion in external debt.

In a post shared via X (formerly Twitter) on April 15, 2024, the Office of the Finance Minister-Ghana said the interim agreement must still undergo some tweaks in order to meet the IMF’s debt sustainability targets.

“We will therefore regroup to continue negotiations until we reach a deal that is consistent with IMF debt sustainability targets,” Ghana’s finance ministry wrote in an update on its external debt operations.

The update comes after a Reuters report on Monday citing a government statement said the country had failed to reach a deal with two groups of international bondholders for debt treatment.

“The Government is actively working on solutions that it believes would be consistent with IMF program parameters under the set of policies currently being discussed, with the objective of reaching a mutual agreement acceptable to all parties,” the statement by the government said, as quoted by Reuters.

In December 2022, Ghana experienced one of its worst economic downturns as it defaulted on making payments on most of its external debt, consisting of $30 billion.

The country has since been shut out from international capital markets and has now resorted to the domestic treasury bill markets for borrowing.

Ghana, which is currently under a 17th IMF bailout programme, on April 13, 2024 reached a staff-level agreement with the IMF Mission team on a second review that will pave the way for a third instalment of the bailout funds of $360 million.

IMF Mission Chief to Ghana, Stephane Roudet, during a joint presser held in Accra, however, urged Ghanaian authorities to secure a deal with its commercial and bilateral creditors for the IMF Management and Executive Board to approve the next disbursement.

Transport Ministry Orders Arrest Of Drivers Charging Unapproved Fares

0

The Ministry of Transport has taken a firm stance against commercial drivers who have hiked transport fares outside the approved rates, leading to added financial strain on commuters.

In a directive issued on Sunday, April 14, 2024, the Ministry called upon the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to apprehend any driver found contravening the existing fare regulations.

As negotiations for revised public transport fares continue with the Road Transport Operators due to the recent surge in fuel prices and operational costs, the Ministry emphasized the importance of adhering to the current fares set by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC).

The Ministry’s Public Relations Unit highlighted that drivers must comply with the established fares, warning of legal consequences for those who fail to comply with the directive.

Supporting the Ministry’s directive, the GPRTU and GRTCC issued a joint statement on Thursday, April 11, 2024, urging commuters not to pay any extra charges beyond the approved fares. They denounced the unilateral fare increases by certain commercial drivers as unlawful, affirming ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Transport towards resolving the fare adjustments.

Acknowledging the challenges posed by rising fuel costs and associated expenses, two transport operating groups, the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana (C-DAG) and the Transport Operators of Ghana, had announced a 15% fare hike, slated to be implemented from Saturday, April 13, 2024.

These groups cited escalating fuel prices, government inaction on petrol cost reductions, and the elevated expense of vehicle spare parts and lubricants as reasons for the fare increment. However, the Ministry’s directive stands in contrast to these independent fare adjustments, stressing the importance of following the approved fare structures until further consensus is reached.

With the call for strict enforcement by the Ghana Police Service and related security agencies, the Ministry aims to uphold fair and consistent public transport pricing while safeguarding commuters from unjustifiable fare hikes during this period of ongoing negotiations.

Accelerating financial independence –

0

One of the most frequent buzzwords in personal finances is financial independence and financial freedom. Even though these words are frequently used, many people need to understand what they truly mean.

In this article, I look at dissecting financial independence, how different it is from financial freedom and how we can, as individuals, accelerate achieving financial independence.

First, let’s take a step back and address the fundamental question of financial independence.

My interactions with young people reveal that having so much money is what, to them, makes one financially independent. That is, however, only part of the story. Financial independence is simply having enough passive income to sustain your desired lifestyle indefinitely if your regular income is no longer coming in. For many, it means not relying on your “9-5” income.

This consideration highlights the fact that financial independence varies from person to person. The bottom line is to sustain your desired lifestyle. For someone receiving GHS 5,000 every month from their passive income, it will be enough to sustain their chosen lifestyle. For others, it is GHS 25,000 and even GHS 2,000. I have always maintained that personal finances are personal, and so is financial independence.

Now, let’s address the concept of financial freedom. Imagine a situation where money is not the major stressor in your life or relationships. When financially free, you won’t have to make all your decisions based on money. The focus is on making an impact. Thus, financial freedom is a step above financial independence. If we want to be financially free, a key milestone is financial independence.

Achieving financial independence is essential for several reasons. Firstly, for many people, job security is an illusion. Technology, regulations, and redundancies constantly impact our jobs. Many firms have conducted massive layoffs in the past three years after the COVID-19 pandemic. Even if any of these don’t happen to you, there is also the matter of retirement, as one cannot work throughout their entire life.

Achieving financial independence also puts you in a better position to help others and amplify what makes you happy, whether travel, vacation or even early retirement. It is also important to highlight that financial independence is a journey; it doesn’t happen overnight.

Achieving financial independence is a gradual process which requires consistent effort, discipline, and patience. There are no shortcuts to true financial independence. A visual representation of this journey makes it easier to appreciate these concepts.

Having set the scene, let’s explore how we can accelerate achieving financial independence, whether you are in the financially stressed or financially stable stage.

Visualize where you want to be: Often, the first step in any journey is to envisage the destination. This stage is about asking yourself what financial independence means to you. What is the magic number that would be enough for you? What timeframe are you looking at achieving your goal of being financially independent? Remember that this differs from person to person.

An example is to “retire at 50 years, move back to my hometown and care for my farms or grandkids”. For another, it will be retiring at age 45 from active employment and travelling the world. This clarity will guide you throughout your journey, helping you stay focused and motivated.

Start Planning Towards It: Once you have a clear vision, the next step is to start. This begins with an honest self-assessment of your financial situation and what you must do to achieve the desired financial independence. What are the assets that are generating your income? What are your liabilities or debts you need to clear? Break down your long-term objectives into smaller, actionable steps and detailed timelines for reaching milestones. Having smaller actionable steps towards a goal motivates me to chalk the subsequent little success towards my main goal.

Budget and Smart Spending: Budgeting is one of the topical issues in literature. It is summarised as spending less than you earn. There are many ways and recommended principles that should guide you. It’s important to reiterate that “personal finances are personal”, and you need to find the type of budgeting and the formula that works best for you. You may adopt the 50:30:20 if you are a beginner on this budgeting journey. This means that 50% of your income should go into your fixed expenses, 30% to your variable costs, and 20% to your savings and investments.

To accelerate your journey to financial independence, it is essential to increase the allocation to savings and investment by reducing your variable expenses and then your fixed costs. All things being equal, the more income you can save or invest towards your financial independence, the quicker you may get there.

Increase your income/ earnings: This is critical to accelerating financial independence. Having one source of income will hamper the extent to which you can be financially independent. Assess how you can harness your skills into profitable ventures and businesses to complement your primary source of income. Increasing your income could mean pursuing further education or certifications, starting a side hustle, or investing in your skills to advance your career.

Invest wisely: The fundamental tenet of financial independence is getting enough passive income to sustain your desired lifestyle. One way of earning passive income is through investments, which are financial or non-financial assets.

Some financial assets include bonds, unit trusts, and equity. In contrast, non-financial assets could be a business or property from which you earn rental income. It is essential to consider your risk tolerance when choosing what asset or investment you undertake. Again, financial independence is a journey, and as such, when investing, you should be focused on something other than get-rich-quick schemes and avoid taking unnecessary risks.

Consider your career: Your career trajectory significantly impacts your journey towards financial independence. Are there growth opportunities and potential for increasing your income within your chosen field? How stable is the income from your career? Furthermore, your career geographic location can impact your financial independence goals due to variations in the cost of living, taxes, and overall job market conditions.

Being in an environment where people are generally underpaid will affect your ability to be financially independent. As such, consider whether further education, skill development, or a career change could align better with your long-term financial goals and accelerate achieving your aspirations.

Continuously assess your financial situation: As your situation changes, you must change your strategy. If you have been able to pay off your debt, then it may be time to increase the allocation of your income to investments. Furthermore, we live in a dynamic and ever-changing world, so we must monitor how these changes affect our everyday lives and financial future.

It is essential that the approaches described above may be iterative and may also not follow a linear direction. It is important also to emphasize that personal finances are personal, and these strategies may not be exhaustive.

Nonetheless, following these steps or strategies while continuously refining our approach will help build a more secure and fulfilling future and accelerate our path towards financial independence. In my subsequent articles, I will address some myths and the pitfalls or challenges to achieving financial independence

EC Interdics 5 Officials Over Alleged Theft Of Biometric Verification Devices

0

Five officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) have been interdicted following the alleged theft of several Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs).

The suspects have been handed over to the police for further investigation, according to Dr Serebour Quaicoe, the Director of Electoral Services at the EC, who provided an update on the case.

Dr Quaicoe emphasized the importance of transferring the suspects to the police to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
He reiterated the Commission’s commitment to upholding justice and ensuring that those responsible for stealing state assets face appropriate penalties.

According to Dr Quaicoe, one BVD was reported missing in North Tongu. The devices had been securely packaged in ballot boxes, which were intended for transportation.
However, upon arrival, the ballot boxes could not be transported, and it was discovered that one BVD was missing.
The incident was immediately reported to the police.

Dr Quaicoe stated, “We have lost this [BVD] and these are the suspects, so investigate and let them go through the legal regime. Whatever has to be done should be done.” The interdicted officials are currently undergoing investigations, and the police plan to arraign them before court soon.

The EC is determined to ensure that justice is served and the suspects are held accountable for their actions. As the investigation progresses, more details will be revealed, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding the theft of the BVDs and the subsequent actions taken by the Electoral Commission and law enforcement agencies.

“What I can say on authority is that we lost one BVD in North Tongu and what happened was that we normally package these things in ballot boxes. You put your systems and you seal. In the course of transporting, we got there, they couldn’t transport the ballot boxes.”

“So we reported to the police. We have lost this and these are the suspects so investigate and let them go through the legal regime.

“Whatever has to be done should be done. They have been interdicted they are now going through the investigations. So, the police I am told that they will be arraigned before court soon.”

Nigerian bankers colluded with government officials to re-loot recovered Abacha loot – EFCC –

0

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has accused commercial banks of colluding with government officials to re-loot recovered loot of the late dictator, Sani Abacha.

In December 2017, the Federal Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Switzerland on the return and monitoring of the $322 million Abacha loot.

The proceeds were intended for Conditional Cash Transfer under the Social Investment Programme which began in December 2016, under ex-president Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The looted funds were meant to provide N5,000 monthly stipends to the most vulnerable Nigerians across the country.

However, on Sunday, a spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, in a statement, said that the anti-graft agency opened investigations into other alleged financial malpractices from the ministry; involving the COVID-19 funds and the World Bank-assisted loan coordinated by the Humanitarian Ministry to assist poor Nigerians.

The EFCC said, “Discreet investigations by the EFCC have opened other fraudulent dealings involving COVID -19 funds, the World Bank loan, Abacha recovered loot released to the ministry by the Federal Government to execute its poverty alleviation mandate. Investigations have also linked several interdicted and suspended officials of the ministry to the alleged financial malfeasance.

“It is instructive to stress that the commission’s investigations are not about individuals. The EFCC is investigating a system and intricate web of fraudulent practices. Banks involved in the alleged fraud are being investigated. Managing directors of the indicted banks have made useful statements to investigators digging into the infractions. Those found wanting will be prosecuted accordingly. Additionally, the EFCC has not cleared anyone allegedly involved in the fraud. Investigations are ongoing and advancing steadily. The public is enjoined to ignore any claim to the contrary.”

The commission also revealed that N32.7 billion and $445,000 had been recovered from both past and suspended officials of the humanitarian ministry.

It added that the commission initiated investigations into the affairs of the humanitarian ministry inviting former minister, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, and her successor, Beta Edu, suspended by President Bola Tinubu in January for alleged abuse of office.

Mahama pledges military barracks in six new regions

0

The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to tackle security issues in the six newly formed regions by setting up military barracks in each region if he emerges victorious in the 2024 elections.

He vowed to establish military barracks in each of these regions if he wins the December general elections.

These regions, namely Savannah, North East, Bono East, Ahafo, Western North, and Oti, would see increased security measures under his leadership.

He made this commitment during his speech in Gambaga, in the North East Region, as a part of his Building the Ghana We Want Tour.

He plans to enhance the security infrastructure and provide a quick response to emerging security threats up military barracks in each region.

“We are going to prioritise the completion of abandoned projects. All six new regions are going to have military barracks so that the Ghana Army will be present in all the regions. In addition, we are going to form joint military and police anti-armed robbery squads and one of those squads will be here in the North East to fight armed robbery.”

“Because we want you to have peace and security to be able to go about your duties and we know that our 24-hour economy policy cannot work unless there is security and safety for everybody,” he explained.

GaDangme Council Condemns Ghana Navy’s Killing Of Two At Kplejoo Festival In Tema

0

The GaDangme Council strongly condemns the use of live ammunition by the Navy during the traditional festival and calls for a thorough investigation into the incident.

According to the Council, those responsible for the deaths of the two youth be held accountable and brought to justice.

The GaDangme Council vehemently condemns the heavy-handedness displayed by the Navy and urges reforms within the security forces to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

It said this represents a grave violation of human rights and an abuse of power, insisting that justice must be served, and those responsible for the tragic deaths of the two youth must be held accountable.

The Kplejoo Festival, a long-standing tradition of the Ga-Dangme Community in Tema, attracts a vibrant influx of youthful energy onto the streets.
The incident has sparked outrage and concern among the public, especially within the Tema Traditional Area.

In a statement signed by Joseph Ayikoi Otoo,
President, GaDangme Council said the military’s role should be to support and defend the citizens, not to harm or kill them.

“The indiscriminate use of live ammunition in a densely populated public space reveals a lack of restraint and a disregard for the safety and well-being of the people. This unfortunate incident further sheds light on a systemic issue of impunity and lack of accountability within the security forces.

“Notably, in 2023, two fishermen lost their lives during a customary Homowo Festival fishing expedition that had been approved by the Tema Traditional Council. Reportedly, a Ghana Navy patrol speedboat collided with the canoe without warning, resulting in fatalities. At that time, the Tema Traditional Council expressed disappointment and called for improved conduct from officers, emphasizing the importance of thorough investigations and accountability. Regrettably, a sense of impunity seems to have prevailed.”

The GaDangme Council deems it crucial to decry such blatant human rights violations and to demand accountability from the authorities responsible for these reprehensible actions, saying that the tragic deaths of the two youth during the traditional festival underscores the urgent need for reforms within the military and security forces.

To prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future, the Council suggested that it is imperative to establish proper training, oversight, and accountability mechanisms. The Navy must be held to a higher standard of conduct and be held accountable for their actions.

Statement Of GaDangme Council Condemning The Use of Live Ammunition During This Year’s Kpejoo Festival of The People of Tema Resulting in Deaths
———————–

The GaDangme Council has received the shocking news that the Ghana
Navy allegedly used live ammunition to control crowd resulting in the tragic deaths of two youth during this year’s Kplejoo Festival which is a long-standing tradition of the Ga-Dangme Community in Tema during which a lot of youthful energy is brought onto the streets. The incident has ignited outrage and concern among the public particularly the people of the Tema Traditional Area.

It is the view of the GaDangme Council that the use of live ammunition by the military during a traditional festival is a gross violation of human rights and an abuse of power. The military’s role is to complement the police to protect and defend the citizens, not to harm or kill them.

The indiscriminate use of live ammunition in a crowded public space demonstrates a lack of restraint and disregard for the safety and well-being of the people.
Furthermore, the use of excessive force by the military reflects a systemic issue of impunity and lack of accountability within the security forces. The culture of impunity enables such abuses of power to go unchecked and perpetuates a cycle of violence and injustice.

It would be recalled that in 2023 two fishermen lost their lives during a customary Homowo festival fishing duly sanctioned by the Tema Traditional Council. The Ghana Navy patrol speedboat allegedly crashed into the canoe without warning resulting in fatalities.
On that occasion the Tema Traditional Council expressed disappointment and called for better conduct from officers, emphasizing the need for thorough investigation and accountability but alas the impunity has repeated itself.

The GaDangme Council considers it
essential to speak out against such flagrant violations of human rights and demand accountability from the authorities responsible for these actions.
Moreover, the tragic deaths of the two youth during the traditional festival highlight the urgent need for reforms in the military and security forces.

Proper training, oversight, and accountability mechanisms must be put in place to ensure that such incidents do not occur again in the future. The Navy must be held to a higher standard of conduct and must be held accountable for their actions.

Consequently, the GaDangme Council condemns in the strongest terms the use of live ammunition by the Navy during the traditional festival and calls for a thorough investigation into the incident. The GaDangme Council demands that those responsible for the deaths of the two youth be held accountable and brought to justice.

The GaDangme Council
condemns the high-handedness
of the Navy and calls for reforms within the security forces to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Justice must be served, and those responsible for the tragic deaths of the two youth must be held accountable.

IMF lauds Ghana’s cocoa and energy sector reforms –

0

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has expressed satisfaction with the country’s implementation of reforms in the cocoa and energy sectors under the Fund’s US$3 billion Extended Credit Facility programme.

The commendation follows the completion of the second review, which paves the way for the disbursement of an additional US$360 million though this is dependent on the country reaching an agreement with its official bilateral creditors on an MoU consistent with the terms agreed in January 2024.

After a 10-day staff visit to Accra, Stéphane Roudet, the IMF Mission Chief for Ghana, praised the government’s efforts to restore macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability.

“I am pleased to announce that IMF staff and the Ghanaian authorities have reached a staff-level agreement on the second review of Ghana’s economic programme under the Extended Credit Facility arrangement,” Mr. Roudet said in a statement.

The agreement is subject to IMF management approval and executive board consideration once financing assurances have been received from Ghana’s official creditors.

The IMF Mission Chief noted that performance under the IMF-supported programme has been generally strong, with most quantitative targets met and good progress made on key structural reforms.

“The authorities’ policies and reforms to restore macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability while laying the foundations for stronger and more inclusive growth are already generating positive results,” he added.

Addressing the country’s challenges in the cocoa and energy sectors, Mr. Roudet said the IMF team had extensive discussions with the government and the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).

“We understand that the government and COCOBOD are committed to ensuring that their activities, such as quasi-fiscal activities, are being curtailed and kept within an envelope that would ensure that their finances are sustainable,” Mr. Roudet reiterated.

In the energy sector, Mr. Roudet acknowledged the significant gap between electricity sales revenue and the underlying costs, noting that the programme was designed to address this shortfall.

“This has been done through implementation of tariff increases last year, significant tariff increases. And this is also being done through implementation of reforms that are really aimed at reducing commercial losses in the sector and reducing technical losses,” he explained.

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, echoed Mr. Roudet’s comments, stating that the progress made is an indication of the government’s “shared determination and commitment to return the economy back to the path of macroeconomic stability and inclusive growth”.

Dr. Adam highlighted the successful achievement of the programme’s key performance indicators, including six quantitative performance criteria, three indicative targets and one structural benchmark due at the end of December 2023, as well as four structural benchmarks due at the end of March 2024.

However, the minister acknowledged that more attention is needed in the energy and cocoa sectors.

“For the energy sector in particular, we’ve discussed the possibility of ensuring that the shortfall in the sector is reduced,” he said, adding that the government will conduct a sector-wide audit, strengthen the implementation of the cash waterfall mechanism and review the tariff-setting methodology to reduce discretion and increase transparency.

Regarding the cocoa sector, Dr. Adam said the government will continue to focus on cost-cutting measures at COCOBOD and rationalise the cocoa road sector to make more resources available for completing unfinished road projects.

The successful completion of the second review under the IMF programme will unlock the disbursement of the third tranche of US$360 million, subject to the IMF executive board’s approval, which is expected in June 2024.

“The staff-level agreement on the second review we have secured marks a significant milestone towards unlocking the disbursement of the third tranche of 360 million dollars under the program,” Dr. Adam said.

Three EC officials interdicted over missing Laptops

0

Three officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) have been interdicted over the alleged theft of some Laptops used for the Biometric Verification Registration.

The suspects have been handed over to the police for further investigations.

Dr Serebour Quaicoe, the Director of Electoral Services at the EC, revealed this information while updating on the case of the missing devices.

He stressed that transferring the suspects to the police is a vital step in enabling comprehensive investigations into the incident.

Dr Quaicoe reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to ensuring justice is upheld and that those guilty of stealing state assets face suitable penalties.

So, the police I am told that they will be arraigned before court soon,” he explained in an interview on Joy FM.

The NDC has consistently stated that five biometric verification devices have been stolen from the custody of the EC but the EC has maintained that only five laptops used for the biometric verification registration are missing.

What Professor Adei said about productivity levels in government work –

0

People who work in the private sector are mostly seen as prim and proper compared to their counterparts in the government sector.

According to renowned economist, Professor Stephen Adei, the lackadaisical attitude of Ghanaians in the government sector could be traced to the bad legacies of colonialism.

He averred that the productivity level recorded in the government sector was usually low.

Touching on the private sector, Professor Adei said the narrative of high productivity level was gradually changing.

The former GRA Board Chairman, in an interview with Accra-based GHOne TV however said workers in these two sectors resort to stealing from their employers.

“I think one of the worst legacies of colonialism in Ghana in particular is ‘aban dwuma’ mentality, government work. It is still there, and the private sector people sometimes are at the point of weeping in the sense that not only is productivity low, but the people really sabotage,” he said in the interview.

“Most of them steal and it is becoming a norm that even Ghanaians not only the Indians and other things, but now certain positions also employ foreigners from Philippines, India and put them in strategic positions,” he added.

You still remain Ronaldo – Wontumi consoles Kwesi Nyantakyi after defeat

0

Kwesi Nyantakyi, former GFA President

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, has urged former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Kwasi Nyantakyi to overcome his pain following his defeat in the Ejisu parliamentary primary.

According to him, Mr. Nyantakyi remains the Ronaldo he touted himself to be ahead of the election on Saturday, April 13, 2024, and shouldn’t lose hope.

Chairman Wontumi as he is popularly known made these remarks on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Monday, stating the aspirant showed Ghanaians a side of him which was unknown to many.

“When you fall in life, that is not the end; you need to rise and I thank him [Nyantakyi] for playing his part. Now he has shown his political side and proven to Ghanaians that he is a good politician. I saw how he campaigned,” he said.

He added that, the last minute sickness could not get in the way of Mr Nyantakyi’s zeal and quest to win.

“Nyantakyi remains the Ronaldo because he was even number 7 on the ballot paper. He was on admission at the Asawase hospital on a drip where I went to visit him and was saddened about his condition yet he came to the election grounds and I even had to send him away,” he said.

Chairman Wontumi acknowledged most of the aspirants played significant roles but stressed elections were underpinned by either victory or defeat

He said there is enough room for everyone in the party to contribute their quota.

The keenly contested election saw the second Vice Chairman for the Ejisu Constituency, Kwabena Boateng emerged victorious with 394 votes.

His close contender, Helena Mensah, who garnered 302 votes while Yaa Akyemaa Aboagye trailed with 229 votes.

NDC demands independent audit into alleged theft of EC laptops

Isaac Adongo, the Ranking Member on the Finance Committee in Parliament, has expressed concerns over the recent staff review conducted by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Ghana’s three-year Extended Facility Programme.

Despite the IMF’s positive evaluation, which positions Ghana to receive the third tranche of $360 million from the total $3 billion IMF bailout package, Adongo has questioned the true state of the nation’s economy.

While the fund has commended Ghana for its performance, citing key indicators that suggest the programme’s effectiveness, Adongo remains sceptical about the actual conditions on the ground.

Ghana is on track to pass the management executive board review, which would result in the release of the third tranche of $360 million from the $3 billion package.

In response to the IMF’s report indicating Ghana’s strong performance, Adongo expressed reservations in an interview with Citi News, emphasizing the disparity between the IMF’s assessment and the realities faced by Ghanaians.

Adongo’s scepticism extends to the IMF’s role as a consultant, suggesting that consultants rarely acknowledge the failure of their advice.

He highlighted that while the IMF may not directly engage with the local market, surveys indicate a worsening inflation rate, a stark contrast to the IMF’s positive review.

“In response to this dire situation, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has laid down clear and non-negotiable demands to ensure the sanctity of our electoral system;

“An official written response to the 35 critical questions posed by the NDC at the IPAC meeting addressing the status and the recovery effort regarding the stolen biometric devices.

“We demand an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the theft of the BVR laptops and the related biometric equipment, including a forensic audit of the voter’s register. This investigation, as we said, must be conducted by an independent body and supplemented with international observers to ensure neutrality and trust. The outcome must be a detailed report that not only identifies the people who are responsible but also outlines significant corrective measures to prevent such breaches in the future,” he stated.

Additionally, the NDC is calling for a comprehensive audit of the EC’s inventory and security protocols, covering all BVR and BVD equipment, to be performed by an independent auditor.

“We call for a complete audit into the EC’s inventories and security measures. This inventory encompasses all BVRs and BVD equipment and must be carried out by an independent auditor to the integrity of all electoral materials,” the General Secretary added.

Watch how Zongo elder ‘scolded’ Okyere Baafi for supposedly engaging in religious politics –

0

The Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry and Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, was scolded in a viral video, by a Muslim leader for supposedly engaging in religious politics.

It is not clear what the deputy minister said but Garkuwan Gababas, an advisor to Zongo Chiefs in the Eastern Region, could have none of his comments.

In the said video clip, Garkuwan Gababas could be seen telling the MP that he does not support his attempt to mix religion and politics.

“You spoke and we listened to you. But I don’t support what you said. This is because we don’t want to mix religion with politics. It is not good to mix religious crisis with politics.

“Today, the census shows the population of Christians is greater than that of Muslims. So, if we Muslims are saying we want a Muslim (leader) we are looking for a problem for ourselves. So, let us stop talking about Christianity and Islam in politics,” he said in Twi.

The advisor added, “Let us think of the person who would be good for us so we choose that person. The person God chooses for us would be the right person for us… If you (politicians) come to us just market your candidate. But if you go on the religion tangent, you are creating a problem for us.”

Okyere Baafi, however, explained that his comment had been misconstrued by Garkuwan Gababas.

He said that it was never his intention to engage in religious politics.

“I’m not a Muslim but I’m always here with you. I come to make donations to you and so, we are not talking about conflict. Don’t misinterpret what I’m saying,” he said.

0

By Benjamin Akoto, GNA

Sunyani, April 15, GNA – Mr Seid Mubarak, the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Sunyani East Constituency has urged the youth against being manipulated by politicians to perpetrate violence in the December 2024 polls.

The parliamentary candidate said he was dedicated to safeguarding the youth from being used to incite violence before, during, and after the Election 2024.

Mr Mubarak made the statement in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani on peace towards the upcoming general elections.

Touching on his prospects in the elections, Mr Mubarak said he was optimistic about a resounding victory, emphasising his commitment to unite the youth in the constituency to collaborate on strategies for achieving development that had long been elusive in the community.

He said Sunyani was lagging in terms of development, saying, the township had reached a point where it needed modern sporting infrastructure to promote sporting activities effectively.

He highlighted another crucial infrastructure gap being a modernised market, to help stimulate economic growth and development in the area by creating opportunities for increased economic activities.

He said he would remain loyal to promoting development in the constituency and restore Sunyani’s reputation as the cleanest city in Ghana which could be achievable if he was voted into power.

Isaac Adongo dismisses IMF’s ‘positive’ assessment on Ghana’s economy

He highlighted that while the IMF may not directly engage with the local market, surveys indicate a worsening inflation rate, a stark contrast to the IMF’s positive review.

“Do you need the IMF to come and tell you that you can’t buy a ball of kenkey? Do you need the IMF to tell you that the fuel is now almost GH¢15 per litre? Do you need the IMF to tell you that you need more than GH¢13 to buy a dollar? IMF is a consultant to Ghana and no consultant has ever told the people of Ghana that it has failed.

“The truth is what you and I know, IMF doesn’t buy things from our market. The survey is telling us that inflation is getting worse and you want to believe what the IMF says?” he asked.

0

Legal Practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has made a bold statement regarding the outcome of the 2024 elections, suggesting that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the election as far back as 2022.

Martin Kpebu’s remarks come amidst a backdrop of ongoing economic challenges, including high inflation and currency depreciation.

Speaking on TV3’s Keypoints monitored by MyNewsGh.com, he said “The NPP lost the 2024 elections in 2022. In 2022, you saw how inflation and cedi depreciation [affected the country]. How are we going to get out of it? As long as we suffered and we are still suffering, it will be hard for the NPP to remain in power,” Kpebu stated.

His comments coincide with the findings of a recent poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics, which indicates a shift in dynamics for this year’s general elections.

According to the poll, the ruling party’s candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (DMB), trails the main opposition candidate, John Dramani Mahama (JDM), in the race to lead the country in 2025.

0

The youth and elders of Offinso Kayera in the Ashanti Region have issued a compelling plea to Dr. Bryan Acheampong, the Minister for Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament(MP) for the Abetifi constituency, to resign from his political positions and assume the role of chief of Offinso Kayera.

This call comes following the recent passing of Nana Karikari Wiafi-Ababio, leaving the chieftaincy position vacant.

According to the community’s spokesperson, Nana Owusu Ansah, Dr. Bryan Acheampong is a direct royal of Offinso Kayera, with his grandparents being among the founders of the town.

“If the Offinso stool is vacant and we have a direct royal of Offinso Kayera such as Bryan Acheampong, it is only right that we make him the chief,” stated Nana Owusu Ansah.

“I ask the youth and people of Offinso Kayera to enstool Bryan Acheampong as the Chief to allow him to bring the development he has brought to other parts of the country to Offinso Kayera as well.”

0

Minister of Finance, Dr. Amin Adam, has said the government will conduct a sector-wide audit of the energy sector which is in line with Ghana’s current IMF-supported programme.

He explained that this has become necessary to ensure compliance in the sector, as well as, enhance implementation of the cash waterfall mechanism to reduce shortfalls.

Speaking at a joint IMF, Bank of Ghana, and Finance Ministry presser held on April 13, the finance minister said government will further review the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) tariff-setting methodology to reduce or eliminate discretion.

He pointed out that this was vital to promote transparency in the formula and process of setting tariffs.

“For the energy sector, in particular, we have discussed the possibility of ensuring that the shortfall in the sector is reduced. The reforms we are pursuing as well as new ones will continue to be implemented.

“We will, for example, conduct a sector-wide audit of the energy sector, strengthen the implementation of the cash waterfall mechanism, review the PURC tariff setting methodology to reduce or eliminate discretion and also to make the formula and the process of tariff setting more transparent,” the finance minister said.

Touching on the cocoa sector, Dr. Amin Adam said the government will continue to monitor COCOBOD’s cost-cutting reforms aimed at addressing the cocoa regulator’s sustainability.

“On the cocoa sector, we will continue to pay attention to the cost-cutting measures being implemented by COCOBOD as well as continue to rationalise the cocoa road sector to make more resources available to complete ongoing road projects,” Dr Amin Adam said.

The finance minister said the government remains committed to implementing the IMF-ECF programme without derailment despite it being an election year.

He added that government aims to restore macroeconomic stability and get the economy back on a sound footing.

Mahama ‘cries’ over Akufo-Addo, Bawumia mess; says Ghana is poorer –

0

Former President John Dramani Mahama has once again criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, regarding the current state of the country.

In a post shared on X on Monday, April 15, 2024, Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), accused Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia of undermining the progress the country has achieved in its democratic journey.

He alleged that the current government has frequently taken actions that violate the democratic principles of the nation, solely for political gain.

These actions, Mahama asserted, have tarnished the reputation of Ghana’s fourth republic.

“The Nana Akufo-Addo and Bawumia-led administration has crossed many red lines in our democratic practice.

“Their deliberate acts of putting political convenience ahead of democratic consolidation have left Ghana’s 4th Republic the poorer for it,” he wrote.

How nudes set-up, blackmail of Akufo-Addo’s female Regional minister backfired –

0

A New Patriotic Party’s Parliamentary hopeful and former Regional Minister Paulina Patience Tangoba Abagaye has advised Women in Politics and in general to be cautious about traps that can be set for them on nudes.

Miss Tangoba Abayage who in November 2018 assumed office as first female substantive Regional Minister of the Upper East said a man was sent to lure and blackmail her in 2019.

The 2020 Navrongo Central MP Hopeful made the disclosure in the wake of allegations of blackmail against broadcaster Serwaa Amihere using her nude pictures.

According to the respected stateswoman, “an industrious” man who approached her for friendship gradually warmed his way and requested for “nude video call”.

She said “from the comfort of his hotel bed he called me on video and requested for nude video call. I was gobsmacked because I never saw that coming. I asked if he knew me that well and what he was requesting for? I nicely told him never to make such a request again. Our friendship slowly ground to a halt in same 2019. KNOW WHAT I FOUND OUT LATER? He had been sent to trap me for a blackmail” she wrote on Facebook with Public Privacy setting.

In 2019, a very industrious man in Ghana here took to my friendship. He seemed to take so much likeness in me and my work and intention to contest the Navrongo seat and attempted giving his support or so I thought.

He made attempts to become more than a platonic friend but I kept pushing him off because that was not my intention for the relationship. But he kept pushing, I’m sure he thought his status will win the day eventually or knew what he was about.

One day he claimed to have travelled to a country in Southern Africa and in the comfort of his hotel bed he called me on video and requested for nude video call. I was gobsmacked because I never saw that coming. I asked if he knew me that well and what he was requesting for? I nicely told him never to make such a request again.

Our friendship slowly ground to a halt in same 2019.

KNOW WHAT I FOUND OUT LATER? He had been sent to trap me for a blackmail. YES!

If you know the caliber of person in this story and how he could even go along with such a diabolic scheme, you’ll agree with me NEVER TO DO NUDES: Especially if you have something to lose.

I’m just narrating this story to one of my daughters and decided to share it here.

I actually tried the person’s number but he didn’t pick 🤣🤣🤣

Over the years, there have been some allegations that the party elected to steer the affairs of the nation collapses some businesses that belong to members of their political opponent.

In Ghana, the case is not different as the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been accused of pulling down some businesses belonging to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Reacting to this trend at the Afro-Heritage Conference and Awards in Lagos, Nigeria, NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama condemned the act and attributed the inadequate rich businessmen on the continent to this attitude of not creating space for businesses to thrive.

He stated categorically that it was wrong for any government to bring businesses to its knees because they were established by their political opponent.

He said, “We must not be afraid for our business people to succeed, we must not be afraid to have rich Africans.”

“Governments must not come and think that because some other governments created this business, then we must kill it. That’s part of the problem that we have. We must believe in ourselves, in adversity comes opportunities,” he added.

John Dramani Mahama further entreated African leaders to invest in the youth and create opportunities for the betterment of the continent.

NDC asks EC 7 questions over missing BVDs and BVR –

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has sternly asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to promptly address seven questions regarding the stolen equipment it reported several months ago.

This call follows what the party’s General Secretary, Fiifi Kwetey, characterizes as the EC’s inaction and lack of transparency to Ghanaians.

During an IPAC meeting, the NDC learned that not only were laptops stolen as reported sosme months ago, but also Biometric Voters Registration (BVR) kits and Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) went missing.

Consequently, the NDC is expecting the EC to provide immediate answers to these questions as members of the party deem it imperative to the Ghanaian citizen.

“Have all unretrieved BVDs been returned to the EC headquarters?, What are the serial numbers of these BVDs? Which polling stations were the BVD’s deployed to? What are the names of the people who are in charge of the BVD’s? When last were these BVDs deployed to a polling station? What are the protocols for the deployment of BVD’s to polling stations? Were these protocols adhered to with respect to the missing BVDs? Who has personal responsibility for the safe custody in return of BVDs deployed to polling stations?” Fiifi Kwetey sternly read out at a press briefing on Monday May 15.

A man of God doesn’t talk anyhow – Kwesi Pratt tells Rev Owusu Bempah –

0

Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt, has reacted to the founder and leader of Glorious Word Power Ministries International, Reverend Isaac Owusu Bempah’s support for Irene Naa Torshie Addo, Administrator of the District Assemblies Common Fund as Vice President Dr Bawumia’s running mate.

During an appearance on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show, Kwesi Prat noted that it would be prudent for Rev. Owusu Pempeh to seek the face of God to know who is best placed to become Dr Bawumia’s running mate.

He said, “Eiii, he [Owusu Bempah] has also shared his opinion. And a prophet doesn’t speak anyhow; he prays and sees things before he speaks. As for me, I have nothing to say,” Pratt remarked.

Reverend Isaac Owusu Bempah suggests that Irene Naa Torshie Addo, Administrator of the District Assemblies Common Fund, is a suitable choice for a running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, if he decides to select a female candidate.

Owusu-Bempah made this recommendation during an interview on the Ade Akye Abia show on Okay FM.

He said, “If Dr Bawumia wants a lady as his running mate, then he has taken too long; he should have mentioned Naa Torshie’s name long ago because that woman, all clergymen in this country respect and honour her dearly.

“I won’t campaign for her because she has not discussed anything like that or that she is interested, but my truth is that if Dr Bawumia wants a female running mate, if they will listen to me, then Naa Torshie is the person who can make the grounds soft for him to win.”

President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

Former President John Dramani Mahama has once again slammed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, over the current state of the country.

In a recent post shared on X, Mr. Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), accused the current administration of undermining the progress made in Ghana’s democratic process.

He pointed out that, several actions taken by the government prioritize political gains over democratic principles, tarnishing the image of Ghana’s fourth republic.

“The Nana Akufo-Addo and Bawumia-led administration has crossed many red lines in our democratic practice.

“Their deliberate acts of putting political convenience ahead of democratic consolidation have left Ghana’s 4th Republic the poorer for it,” he wrote.

Government Assures Ghanaians Of No New Taxes

0

Mohammed Amin Adam

In a press briefing held on Saturday, Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam assured Ghanaians that the government is committed to not burdening citizens with more taxes.

He emphasized that the government will take a tough stance on collecting revenue from those who have been evading or not properly paying taxes in the country.

The announcement came after the country reached a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement.
However, the suspension of the 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity consumption and the annual GHC100 levy on petrol and diesel vehicle owners created a revenue gap of GHC1.8 billion.

To address this revenue gap, the government plans to implement effective revenue generation mechanisms announced in both the 2023 and 2024 budgets. Minister Amin Adam stated, “We’re determined to go out there and collect the taxes from those who have not been paying and those who have been evading taxes… to generate the desired revenue to fill the gap created as a result of the suspension of the taxes.”

Furthermore, the government is also focusing on expenditure rationalization to complement its aggressive revenue mobilization efforts. Amin Adam highlighted the implementation of an arrears-clearing plan to address outstanding payments and the onboarding of more agencies to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) to control spending within budgetary limits.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by Ghanaians due to IMF-supported reforms, Amin Adam encouraged citizens to remain patient and sacrificial.
He assured them that the fiscal consolidation efforts would eventually bring relief and contribute to the country’s economic growth.

Julie Essiam, the commissioner general of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), provided further insights into alternative revenue mobilization efforts.
GRA and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) are working together to ensure the effective implementation of compliance measures on the foreign income of resident Ghanaians, aiming to generate the GHS1.8 billion revenue that the suspended electricity and waste pollution taxes would have provided.

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Ernest Addison, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to prevent election-related expenditures from derailing economic progress. Addison stated, “The government and the central bank are committed to changing that narrative…and we will remain committed to ensure that program implementation stays firm.”

It is anticipated that in June this year, the IMF Board will approve Ghana’s third tranche of US$360 million, bringing the total disbursement under the country’s ECF arrangement to US$1.56 billion. The IMF-supported program aims to restore macroeconomic stability, debt sustainability, and inclusive growth, with a focus on building resilience in the post-COVID-19 era.

With the government’s determination to address revenue shortfalls without overburdening citizens, Ghanaians are hopeful that these measures will lead to economic stability and prosperity in the long run.

We need to be more self-reliant – Mahama charges African leaders –

0

In a bid to reduce the high level of dependence on foreign aid, former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has urged African leaders to be self-reliant.

In his view, there are many opportunities on the continent that Africans can tap into to better both their lives and their respective local economies.

Speaking at the second edition of the Afro-Heritage Conference and Awards in Lagos Nigeria over the weekend, John Mahama said, “I think we must be more self-reliant as a continent, there are many opportunities that we can take advantage of. I was looking at a figure that we will give in our budget statements which is Gross Domestic Product (GDP).”

“The question we must ask ourselves is, what percentage of that GDP is indigenous? What percentage of that GDP is African? When we mark that percentage which is called the Gross National Product, not Gross Domestic Product, we will be able to see how well our people are doing and what the progress is,” he stated.

In this vein, he called on African leaders to desist from collapsing businesses belonging to their political opponents.

“We must not be afraid for our business people to succeed, we must not be afraid to have rich Africans,” Mr Mahama said.

The various economies, he said, will thrive if businesses are given a conducive environment to operate.

A president who tries to fix corruption now would die in 2 weeks – Okyeame Kwame –

0

Popular Ghanaian artiste Okyeame Kwame has suggested that the solution to Ghana’s problems lies in the mindset of the future generation.

According to the Rap Doctor, the current political landscape is so ingrained in corruption that no significant change can be made.

He pointed out that any president attempting to fix the country would rather end up dead due to the prevalence of corrupt individuals.

“NDC/NPP cannot help Ghana; family is what can help Ghana. The problem affecting us as a people is a problem of the mind.

“The corrupt system cannot fix itself; it makes a lot of people rich and happy. If a president wants to come and fight corruption in the country right now, he will be dead in 2 weeks.

“It’s not about pay; it’s not about money; it’s about morality,” he said.

He blamed the issue of corruption on the current generation of Ghanaians and suggested that the best solution is to train the young ones to be incorruptible.

“The politician was put in power by you and me; they are a representation of us, so if they are corrupt, it shows that you are corrupt.

“I agree that politicians are causing problems, but as you fight the politicians, train your child not to think like a politician.

“My vision is that we train our children to be incorruptible so that they will grow up and do away with this corrupt system. That is the only way I think Ghana would develop. Let us focus on training the young ones now,” he said.

When questioned about the current crop of politicians still in power, Okyeame Kwame stated, “They will die”, indicating that there is a need to train children to be selfless.

Man Utd players ‘convinced’ Erik ten Hag will get sacked this summer –

0

A number of Manchester United players are delaying decisions on their futures as they are ‘convinced’ manager Erik ten Hag will get sacked, a report has claimed.

Ten Hag’s position has been under real pressure since Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS arrived at Old Trafford earlier this year, with tensions continuing to rise amid a run of underwhelming results, the latest of which came in the form of a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth at the weekend.

With United now at risk of securing their lowest-ever Premier League finish, the Manchester Evening News state there are several players who are now convinced that Ten Hag will not be in charge of the club next season.

With certain members of the squad expecting a change in manager, those players are also said to be delaying decisions over their own futures until they know who will be in the dugout next year.

There is no mention of which players share this stance but United do have several players approaching the end of their contracts and facing uncertain futures this summer, and there is a reluctance to make any decisions until Ten Hag’s future is resolved.

Ten Hag has publicly insisted he is confident he will still be in charge at United next season but Ratcliffe has declined to make any concrete statements on the manager’s future.

INEOS chiefs have also been searching the market for potential replacements in case they decide to part ways with Ten Hag this summer, with England boss Gareth Southgate among the names linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Ten Hag will enter the final year of his own £9m-a-year contract this summer, so United officials would have to agree a compensation fee to buy their way out of Ten Hag’s deal.

Nhyiraba Kojo explains why people tag him as a ‘fraudster’ –

0

Ghanaian musician, Nhyiraba Kojo, has explained why some members of the public have tagged him as a fraudster.

In his explanation, he noted that when he began performing at various events, he adopted a strategy to share money with the fans who would be present to cheer him up.

Narrating further, he stated that he divided the money he would earn from the event into two and shared one portion of it with the fans in order to win their hearts and support.

Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz which was monitored by GhanaWeb, Nhyiraba disclosed that some individuals began tagging him a ‘fraudster’ when they became suspicious of his source of income.

“It all started during the turnaround. I decided to split my performance fee into two and share one with the fans so that they would show up for my events. Every show that I perform, the crowd will be massive because they know I will throw money at them, which happens.

“In the course of doing that, people began to question my source of income and ended up with the tag [fraudster]. It appears bad news gains more popularity, so the bloggers also work on it a lot,” he told the host, MzGee.

The musician further indicated that he is not perturbed by the fraud allegations because he knows there is no iota of truth in it, attributing his wealth to Godly blessings.

“God knows the truth and he blesses one to be rich. Once the allegations are not true, it does not bother me at all,” he added.

Stanbic Executive calls for involvement of financial institutions in wholesale electricity market –

0

Sydney Nii Ayitey Tetteh, Executive Vice President, Energy and Infrastructure at Stanbic Bank Ghana, has emphasized the important role of financial institutions in the soon to be implemented wholesale electricity market.

He made this statement at the Electricity Market Conference held at the Volta Residence, Akuse in the Eastern Region.

The Electricity Market Conference had experts in the energy sector share insights on ways to bring about significant improvement in Ghana’s energy sector. Mr. Tetteh, on his part, indicated that, “Electricity serves as the lifeblood of any thriving economy, and Ghana stands as no exception to this reality.

To remain truly impactful in driving a nation’s development, financial institutions must take an active role within the energy sector. Presently, while our involvement in various aspects of the power sector is evident, there is a collective desire to further extend our contribution”.

Mr. Tetteh further stated that, “As a leading financial institution in the country, we at Stanbic Bank believe that a fully sanitized energy sector with active working stakeholders will create an enabling environment to support funding.

We are therefore deeply committed to engaging in this pivotal phase of the deregulation process, namely wholesale electricity market. Through our participation in that market, we aim to play a transformative role in ensuring a more robust, efficient, and sustainable energy landscape for Ghana’s future prosperity.”

Active involvement by financial institutions in the energy space have mainly been hindered by a difficult credit environment. Finding a lasting solution to this requires broader stakeholder engagement and collaboration.

The event was chaired by the Deputy Minister of Energy and Chairman of the Board for the Electricity Company Ghana (ECG), Hon. Herbert Krapa. In his address, the Deputy Minister shared that, “The discussions are imperative for the nation’s holistic progress. I’m delighted to have participated today, and I trust that these conversations will persist. As a ministry, we are eager to collaborate further, understanding the necessary steps and commitments required. We must develop a market framework that addresses our challenges and fosters the establishment of a sustainable power sector.”

The Electricity Market Conference, which spanned over two days, served as a crucial platform for key stakeholders in the energy sector to convene, discussing the significant challenges confronting the industry and collaboratively devising solutions. The aim was to foster positive transformations within the energy landscape, benefiting both market players and consumers nationwide.

Support Homegrown Initiatives Against Insecurity – Kan-Dapaah

0

Albert Kan-Dapaah

National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah, has advocated for homegrown initiatives in curbing security threats in West Africa during a lecture at the African Studies Centre, University of Florida, US.

Speaking on the theme, “Ensuring Security and Democracy in West Africa: Ghana’s Role in Regional and International Cooperation” Mr. Kan-Dapaah stressed that developments in West Africa are emblematic of the chaos and crisis that have characterised our world in the past decade; the magnitude of which remains unprecedented since the end of the cold war.

However, he noted the drastic deviations in motivations of perpetrators of insecurity in the region, underscoring the peculiar challenge in the Sahel, the Lake Chad Basin, etc., highlighting the threats to Ghana and emphasizing the necessity for distinct counter approaches.

“Of particular concern is the southward drift of the terrorist threat from the Sahel region to Coastal West African states along the Gulf of Guinea. For the first time, littoral States such as Togo and Benin which were once considered to be Police States impervious to terrorist attacks, recorded more than 40 deaths each from terrorism in 2023.

The result of this development is that, with the exception of Ghana, all Coastal West African States along the Gulf of Guinea have recorded a terrorist attack” he acknowledged.

In light of these complexities, he advocated for the implementation of “homegrown initiatives anchored on a sub-regional cooperation framework in the fight against terrorism.”

He emphasized Ghana’s unique position as a bastion of democracy and stability within the region, particularly as neighboring countries like Togo face risks of democratic regression.

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of bolstering support for ECOWAS and the Ghana-led Accra Initiative to tackle the diverse array of challenges confronting the region.

“Ranging from unemployment to governance deficiencies to the scourge of terrorism, these challenges necessitate both strategic kinetic and non-kinetic approaches to effectively mitigate trans-boundary threats while simultaneously addressing internal issues,” he said.

Finally, the minister urged students and the entire academic community to intensify their research efforts, seeking measures to achieve “a peaceful and stable West African region where democracy thrives and terrorism becomes a thing of the past.”

He also called on development partners to tailor their interventions to support local initiatives aimed at fostering stability within the region.

Mikel Arteta confirms major Arsenal injury scare ahead of Bayern Munich second leg –

0

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has admitted club captain Martin Odegaard had to be withdrawn from Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa through injury.

The midfield star was taken off the pitch and replaced by Emile Smith Rowe in the 79th minute, with the score still at 0-0. It was the first time since October 2023 that Arteta has withdrawn his captain while the team were not winning.

Arteta was asked for his reasoning behind removing the midfielder from the game, and he provided a worrying update to the media.

“He was feeling something,” Arteta said of Odegaard. “He could not continue.”

The Gunners boss refused to go into further detail on the matter, with no clarity over whether he will be available for Arsenal’s highly-anticipated clash with Bayern in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Arteta’s squad are set to head to Germany for the second leg with everything to play for, having drawn 2-2 with the Bundesliga side at the Emirates previously.

The Spanish coach affirmed after the first leg that his side would be committed to putting in a better performance in Germany, after poor defensive issues allowed Thomas Tuchel’s team to slide two goals into the back of the net.

Odegaard and his teammates may be even more determined to succeed on Wednesday after a dissapointing loss against Villa saw Manchester City rise above them in the league. The Gunners now sit two points behind City and level on points with Liverpool, who also fell to a surprise loss at the hands of Crystal Palace.

NPP Group Advocates Akan Running Mate For Bawumia

0

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

A research group within the governing New Patriotic Party, the Patriotic Intelligence Network (PIN), has urged the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to consider a running mate with an Akan background ahead of the 2024 general elections.

According to the group, selecting a running mate with an Akan background is essential to consolidate the party’s votes in the eight Akan-dominated regions and to enhance the chances of the flagbearer.

In a statement signed by Michael Ntiamoah Boadu, Director of the group, they indicated that apart from the campaign, the flagbearer, when elected as president, would need a vice-president who is associated with the majority group in Ghana, hence the suggestion of an Akan running mate.

“At this crucial point, the Flagbearer will have to exercise sound discretion and circumspection and settle on a compromise candidate with the capacity to mobilize voters nationwide, especially in the eight Akan Regions, and cooperate with him in government,” the statement said.

Caution

However, the group cautioned the flagbearer not to settle on an Akan candidate burdened with negatives or whose selection could derail the party’s success. They expressed concern about the ongoing developments in the Ashanti region where the desire to become a running mate seems to be causing division.

“This development portends danger that may deepen the party’s woes if lessons are not learned to guide the choice of the Running Mate. It’s worrying to hear the energetic members of the party in the Ashanti Region, who will certainly constitute the revolutionary team of the campaign, threatening a boycott if their preferred choice is not selected as Vice Presidential Candidate,” the statement noted.

“Uncharacteristically, members of the various factions in the Ashanti Region are so entrenched in their positions that a choice from either camp will deepen the cracks instead of fostering political cohesion and comradeship among Ashanti NPP members,” it added.

The group is therefore urging the flagbearer to look beyond individuals aligned with various factions in the Ashanti region and consider a neutral person from the region or “a credible, affable, and young person from Brong Ahafo, the home region of Prof. K.A. Busia, with social ties to Eastern or Ashanti”.

“Coming events, they say, cast their shadows before them; a Running Mate from the Ashanti Region, the bulwark of NPP, will potentially chase the Elephant into the bush, as the two factions have resolved to work against each other should they lose in their bid. In this circumstance, the party’s utmost interest would be served if the Vice Presidential Candidate is chosen outside these groups,” the statement said.

EOCO Bounces Adei Over Road Contract Corruption Allegation

0

Professor Stephen Adei

The Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) has dismissed Professor Stephen Adei’s allegation of corruption in the award of road contracts.

On October 20, 2023, the former Board Chairman of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) revealed to an Accra-based TV station that those seeking road contracts are told to pay a one-million-cedi upfront fee.

The Ministry of Roads and Highways, after expressing surprise over the allegation, referred the issue to EOCO for investigation, noting that the processes leading to the award of road contracts are “open, transparent, competitive and in accordance with the law.”

“Given that the alleged conduct borders on the commission of crime against the Republic, the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, has today, October 23, 2023, requested the Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) to fully investigate the allegations,” the Ministry said in a press statement.

However, in a statement issued over the weekend, the Roads and Highways Ministry stated that EOCO has dismissed the accusation as baseless and unmeritorious.

According to the statement, EOCO in a letter dated  March 21, 2024 indicated to the ministry the conclusion of the investigation and determined that, “From the totality of the available information to the office, Prof. Stephen Adei’s comments were found to be unfortunate and general within the context of perceived corruption in the country.”

It said EOCO disposed of the matter as “unsubstantiated and highly presumptuous.”

“The Ministry is fully satisfied with the outcome of the investigation and wishes to reiterate its commitment to transparency and due process in the award of contracts,” the statement concluded.

Bayer Leverkusen win Bundesliga title for the first time ever –

0

Bayer Leverkusen have won their first ever Bundesliga title thanks to a 5-0 win over Werder Bremen on Sunday.

Despite there being six gameweeks of football left in the 2023/24 season, heading into this weekend Xabi Alonso’s side needed just one more win to secure the BuLi title thanks to their stunning form throughout the campaign. Leverkusen went into the game against Werder Bremen on Sunday having not tasted defeat once throughout the entirety of the campaign – both domestically and on the continent.

And, as expected, Leverkusen made light work of the game at the Bay Arena, bagging the win thanks to goals from Victor Boniface, Granit Xhaka and a hat-trick from Florian Wirtz.

In the 23rd minute, Leverkusen deservedly got their opening goal courtesy of a penalty kick awarded following a silly challenge from on Jonas Hofmann in the box. Up stepped Victor Boniface to take the resulting spot kick, and he made no mistake – firing low into the net.

Leverkusen came close to putting the game to bed late in the first half through Yacine Adli, with the forward cannoning off the crossbar from inside the box after being found by Hofmann with a clever cross.

On the hour mark, Alonso’s side got the all-important second goal. Said goal would come courtesy of ex-Arsenal man Granit Xhaka, who curled the ball wonderfully into the top left corner of the net from fully 30 yards out.

Not too long after, it was 3-0. Star man Florian Wirtz was next to get on the scoresheet, rifling the ball into the roof of the net from just outside the penalty area.

Wirtz bagged his second and third goal of the game late on, racing through and curling into the net on two separate occasions to send the Bay Arena fans into rapture

Remarkably, this is the first time Leverkusen have ever won the league title, finishing as unfortunate runners-up on five occasions previously – most famously in 2001/02 when a Michael Ballack-led team also made it the UEFA Champions League and DFB-Pokal finals.

Having now secured the title, Alonso’s side now have a chance to win a famous treble this season. Leverkusen have already booked their place in the DFB-Pokal final – in which they’ll face 1. FCK – and are on the brink of the UEFA Europa League semi-finals after beating West Ham 2-0 in the first leg of their quarter-final clash last week.

Movie producer says actor refused dirty life jacket –

0

Movie producer, Adanma Luke has spoken out about the boat mishap that happened while filming a new film in Delta State.

The accident led to the death of famous actor Junior Pope along with four others.

Speaking on the incident for the first time since it happened, Mrs. Luke blamed the death of Junior Pope’s to his failure to wear a life jacket while on the boat ride.

“On that shooting day, I saw my director. I saw Emeka. They were outside. My director was wearing a life jacket. Emeka, the D.O.P. was in a life jacket. There was still one other jacket which I don’t know who took it.

“My production manager said they saw one life jacket hanging so, they took it. He said they sent one to Junior Pope but he said it was dirty and didn’t take it. Those people with life jackets survived (the boat accident),” Adanma said in a video clip uploaded on her Instagram page on Saturday.

“They also told me that when they were in the water trying to survive, Junior Pope was asking if everybody was okay. They even threw a gallon to him to use and hold himself up. But all of a sudden, they didn’t see him again.

“It was when they came out that they noticed, he was no longer there. They said divers came and rescued some of them while other divers were still there trying to save others,” she added.

However, Adanma did not clearly state if the four other who died were also not in life jackets.

Junior Pope and four other actors drowned after their boat capsised in Anam River in Anambra State on Wednesday, April 10 while returning from the location of a movie shoot.

Actors Guild of Nigeria takes action

Following Junior Pope’s death, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) took an industry-affecting decisions in response to the tragic deaths of actor John Paul Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope.

Under his leadership as National President, Emeka Rollas, announced a number of measures;

Suspension of Riverine Film Shoots: All films involving riverine areas and boat riding are suspended indefinitely. This decision aims to prioritize safety and prevent similar mishaps in the future.
Nationwide Shoot Suspension: There will be no filming activities at any location across the country on Thursday, April 11, 2024. This pause is a mark of respect and mourning for the lives lost.
Indefinite Suspension of “Another Side of Life” Film: The production of “Another Side of Life” is halted until further notice as part of the precautionary measures taken by the guild.
Restriction on Working with Adamma Luke: Actors are prohibited from working with Adamma Luke as a producer until further directives are issued. This step is part of the ongoing investigation and safety considerations.

Six new regions will have military barracks if NDC wins December polls

0

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to tackle security issues in the six newly formed regions by setting up military barracks in each region if he emerges victorious in the 2024 elections.

The regions include Savannah, North East, Bono East, Ahafo, Western North and Oti.

He made this commitment during his speech in Gambaga, in the North East Region, as a part of his Building the Ghana We Want Tour.

Recognizing the urgent need for improved security in the new regions, Mr Mahama stressed the importance of proactive steps to ensure the residents’ safety and well-being.

He plans to enhance the security infrastructure and provide a quick response to emerging threats and incidents by setting up military barracks in each region.

Diogo Dalot disagrees with Erik ten Hag over Man Utd tactics –

0

Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has expressed concern over the number of shots his side face, despite manager Erik ten Hag routinely downplaying the issue.

Only relegation-battling Premier League newcomers Luton Town (576) have faced more shots this season than United (574), while the Red Devils have given up over 20 shots in nine of their last ten league games.

Ten Hag, who has been criticised for using a tactical system which leaves huge gaps between the midfield and defence, has regularly defended this issue, claiming the goals conceded stat is more important than just shots alone.

But speaking after Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Bournemouth, Dalot insisted United’s tactics leave them too vulnerable at the back and they want to find a solution to this problem.

“I think it’s a fact, something we are looking for. Maybe we are taking too many risks, sometimes the gap between the defence and midfield is a little bit too big,” he said.

Ten Hag has been bullish in defence of his own tactics / Marc Atkins/GettyImages

“This is why we are sometimes getting the counter attacks too many times and are conceding too many shots, but overall we are looking forward to taking this as a learning process and trying to do better.

“I’m disappointed [with the draw]. We wanted to come here and get the three points. We were down twice, so we had the hunger to fight for the game. I think we lost control in situations we shouldn’t and that was the script of the match.

“I mean, we lost a little bit of control, especially building up from the back in situations where we shouldn’t and we conceded two goals in the first half – we could have avoided that, but overall we have the attitude to fight for the result and that’s a positive to take away.”

United return to action on Sunday at Wembley in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, taking on Championship side Coventry City.

We await Ghana to reach an agreement with external creditors – IMF Mission Chief –

0

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Mission Cheif for Ghana, Mr. Stéphane Roudet, has said that they are awaiting Ghana to reach an agreement with external creditors to enable the Board to review the Staff Level agreement that has been reached as part of the process to release the third tranche.

The IMF staff and the Ghanaian authorities have reached a staff-level agreement on the second review of Ghana’s economic program under the Extended Credit Facility arrangement.

This staff-level agreement is subject to IMF Management approval and Executive Board consideration once the necessary financing assurances have been received.

Mr Roudet said at a joint Press IMF, Ministry of Fiannce, Bank of Ghana press conference in Accra on Saturday April 13 that an agreement between the Ghanaian authorities and their official creditors on an MoU for a debt treatment in line with program parameters, would provide the needed financing assurances.

Upon completion of the Executive Board review, he said, Ghana would have access to US$ 360 million, bringing the total IMF financial support disbursed under the arrangement since May 2023 to US$ 1,560 million.

“Performance under the IMF-supported program has been generally strong, with most quantitative targets met. Good progress has also been made on the key structural reform milestones. The authorities’ policies and reforms to restore macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability while laying the foundations for stronger and more inclusive growth are already generating positive results.

“Economic activity in 2023 was more robust than initially envisaged, and growth projections for 2024 will be revised upward. Monetary policy has remained appropriately tight, allowing for inflation to decline rapidly.

“On the fiscal front, consistent with the authorities’ commitments under the IMF-supported program, the fiscal primary balance on a commitment basis improved by over 4 percentage points of GDP in 2023 and is on track to achieve a fiscal primary surplus of ½ percent of GDP in 2024. Spending has remained within budget limits, while the authorities have significantly expanded social protection programs to help mitigate the impact of the crisis on the most vulnerable. Ghana has met its non-oil revenue mobilization target, while making progress in implementing ambitious structural fiscal reforms to bolster domestic revenues, strengthen public financial and debt management, and enhance transparency,” a statement issued by the Fund after the press conference said.

Below is the full statement…

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) staff team, led by Mr. Stéphane Roudet, Mission Chief for Ghana, held meetings in Accra during April 2-12, 2024, to discuss progress on reforms and the authorities’ policy priorities in the context of the second review of Ghana’s three-year program under the Extended Credit Facility. The arrangement was approved by the IMF Executive Board for a total amount of SDR 2.242 billion (US$ 3 billion) on May 17, 2023.

At the end of the mission, Mr. Roudet issued the following statement:

“I am pleased to announce that IMF staff and the Ghanaian authorities have reached a staff-level agreement on the second review of Ghana’s economic program under the Extended Credit Facility arrangement. This staff-level agreement is subject to IMF Management approval and Executive Board consideration once the necessary financing assurances have been received. An agreement between the Ghanaian authorities and their official creditors on an MoU for a debt treatment in line with program parameters, would provide the needed financing assurances. Upon completion of the Executive Board review, Ghana would have access to SDR 269.1 million (about US$ 360 million), bringing the total IMF financial support disbursed under the arrangement since May 2023 to SDR 1,171.9 million (about US$ 1,560 million).

Ghana has met its non-oil revenue mobilization target, while making progress in implementing ambitious structural fiscal reforms to bolster domestic revenues, strengthen public financial and debt management, and enhance transparency.

“The external sector has improved significantly, with international reserve accumulation ahead of program objectives. Financial stability has been preserved, with banks posting solid profits in 2023.

“Given Ghana’s strong progress under the IMF-supported program, the next key step for the country is to reach an agreement with its official bilateral creditors on an MoU consistent with the terms agreed in January 2024. We look forward to the authorities’ continued efforts to reach an agreement with all creditors in line with program parameters.”

Junior Pope Not Buried By River Bank – Police Clarify

0

Nollywood actor John Paul Odonwodo, well known by his stage name Junior Pope, was not buried by the Anam River, according to the Anambra State Police Command.

SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the Command’s spokesman, said on Sunday that only three of the deceased families decided to bury the victims along the river.

He stated that after the three were buried, one of the families returned to exhume their daughter’s remains for a proper burial in her country home.

Ikenga further stated that Junior Pope’s body was deposited at a mortuary.

“The Command, on an inquiry about the unconfirmed information that the recovered bodies including Junior Pope were buried by the Riverside where the boat accident happened, discovered that three of the deceased families accepted the victims should be buried beside the river.

“But later, the family of one of the victims decided to exhume the body to be given a proper burial in her state while the other two were still buried there.

“Also, Junior Pope and one other are still in the morgue and await the deceased families’ funeral arrangements,” he said.

The PPRO added that the Command is still investigating the regrettable situation.

Shatta Wale should apologise to disability community for describing Stonebwoy as ‘Apakye Celebrity’ –

0

In the Ghanaian music industry, two towering figures have commanded the dancehall scene for over a decade: Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale. Yet, beneath the veneer of their musical prowess lies a simmering feud, characterized by claims to the title of dancehall king and fueled by personal and professional rivalry.

The intense rivalry between these two prominent figures in the dancehall genre has not only endured but has also grown stronger over time, resonating deeply within their loyal fan bases. Stonebwoy’s supporters, known as Bhimnation, and Shatta Wale’s followers, referred to as the Shatta Movement, have become deeply entrenched in this ongoing feud.

The tensions between these two camps reached a boiling point during the 2019 VGMA (Vodafone Ghana Music Awards), when an alarming incident occurred which led to their ban from the award scheme. Stonebwoy, in a moment of intense confrontation, resorted to brandishing a firearm in the direction of Shatta Wale, escalating an already charged atmosphere. This incident further fueled the already heightened animosity between the two factions.

Despite the joint press conference they held on June 4, 2019 to publicly declare their resolution facilitated by police intervention, it is evident that the ongoing feud between the two dancehall icons is far from over. While the press conference may have created an illusion of reconciliation, it is unmistakable that the animosity between them will persist for the foreseeable future.

The underlying tensions and deep-seated rivalry between Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale are likely to continue to shape their interactions and the dynamics within their respective fan bases. The specter of this long-standing conflict looms ominously, casting a shadow over any semblance of a lasting truce.

The recent ‘Salafest’ concert, hosted by Baba Sadiq last Thursday, Aprill 11, 2024, as part of the Eid ul Fitr celebration, cast a stark light on this rivalry, unveiling a disturbing turn of events that transcended mere competition.

Allegations are that when Stonebwoy learnt that, Shatta Wale had also been billed to perform at the concert, he opted to boycott the event. While his action is unfortunate, Shatta Wale’s response on the platform was not only unprofessional but also reprehensible.

In a display of blatant ableism, Shatta Wale unleashed a barrage of insults targeting Stonebwoy’s disability, a move that not only perpetuated harmful stereotypes but also underscored the urgent need for accountability and awareness within the Ghanaian music industry.

In this article, I seek to elucidate why Shatta Wale’s actions necessitate a sincere apology to the disability community of Ghana, examining the broader ramifications of his behaviour and emphasizing the imperative of fostering inclusivity and respect for all individuals. I do this with the background as a professionally trained counselor, with a fair appreciation of how such pronouncements and stereotypes can have significant traumatic impact on Stonebwoy and the disability community as a whole.

Shatta Wale’s derogatory remarks directed at Stonebwoy’s disability at the ‘Salafest’ concert epitomize the insidious nature of ableism—a pervasive form of discrimination and social prejudice against people with disabilities. By weaponizing Stonebwoy’s disability as a means of ridicule, Shatta Wale not only perpetuated damaging stereotypes but also reinforced the pernicious belief that individuals with disabilities are somehow inferior or deserving of scorn.

Such behaviour not only reflects poorly on Shatta Wale as an individual but also highlights the entrenched ableism that continues to pervade Ghanaian society, exacerbating the marginalization and stigmatization faced by people with disabilities.

Moreover, Shatta Wale’s pronouncements at the ‘Salafest’ concert reverberate far beyond the confines of the music industry, sending a distressing message to the disability community at large. People with disabilities already contend with myriad obstacles in their pursuit of equality and inclusion, ranging from physical barriers to societal attitudes and perceptions.

By publicly denigrating Stonebwoy’s disability, Shatta Wale perpetuated harmful stereotypes and further entrenched the societal barriers that impede the full participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of life. This not only erodes the self-esteem and confidence of individuals with disabilities but also undermines efforts to cultivate a more inclusive and equitable society for all.

Furthermore, Shatta Wale’s conduct at the Salafest concert strikes a discordant note in the chorus of efforts to promote diversity and inclusivity within the music industry. Music has long served as a unifying force, transcending boundaries of language, culture, and creed to foster connection and solidarity among people.

However, when artistes misuse their platform to propagate hate speech and perpetuate discrimination, it tarnishes the reputation of the entire industry and undermines its potential to effect positive change. Shatta Wale’s behaviour not only besmirches his own legacy but also reflects poorly on the music industry as a whole, reinforcing the notion that discrimination and prejudice are acceptable.

What is more; it is important to emphasise that Shatta Wale has a significant number of devoted supporters and fans who happen to be disabled. These individuals actively engage with his music and regard him as a source of inspiration and empowerment.

Meanwhile, Shatta Wale’s derogatory remarks targeting Stonebwoy’s disability send a profound message to these fans, implying that they are unwelcome within his space. Such comments not only undermine their sense of belonging and inclusion but also perpetuate harmful stereotypes and prejudices against people with disabilities.

By disregarding the impact of his words on this particular group of ‘disabled’ fans, Shatta Wale inadvertently reinforces a culture of exclusion and discrimination, contradicting the notion of music’s ability to bring people together regardless of their differences.

The point is that, Shatta Wale’s actions at the ‘Salafest’ concert demand a genuine apology to the disability community of Ghana. His disparaging remarks towards Stonebwoy’s disability not only perpetuated harmful stereotypes but also underscored the urgent need for greater awareness and accountability within the Ghanaian music industry.

As a public figure, Shatta Wale wields considerable influence and carries a responsibility to wield that influence responsibly, promoting messages of acceptance, respect, and equality for all individuals, regardless of their abilities. An apology from Shatta Wale would not only acknowledge the harm caused but also serve as a crucial step towards fostering a more inclusive and respectful society for people with disabilities in Ghana and beyond.

Shatta Wale’s actions serve as a stark reminder of the work that remains to be done in dismantling discriminatory attitudes and fostering a more equitable society. It is imperative that we hold individuals accountable for their words and actions, particularly those in positions of influence, and work collectively towards building a society that embraces diversity and celebrates the inherent worth and dignity of every individual.

Although I recognize that engaging in rivalries has become ingrained in the music industry, particularly within the dancehall genre, even at the global level, I strongly advocate for a form of beef that refrains from targeting individuals’ disabilities, personal struggles, and private lives.

While healthy competition and playful banter can add excitement to the music industry, it is crucial to draw a line and ensure that such exchanges do not cross into the line of personal attacks or discrimination.

By prioritizing respect and empathy, artistes can contribute to a more inclusive and supportive environment, where the focus remains on the music itself rather than tearing down individuals based on their vulnerabilities. It is essential to foster an atmosphere that encourages creativity without compromising the dignity and well-being of others involved.

Who will reject such offer? – Gyan ready to be Bawumia’s running mate –

0

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has served notice he will accept the offer to partner Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate if it is tabled.

He said no one will reject such an “honour” but he knows they are just mere rumours.

“Honour is something everybody likes,” he said after having a good laugh about the question.

“I won’t reject it but I know that’s big.”

The question was posed by host Captain Smart on Onua Maakye on Onua TV on Monday, April 15 during an exclusive interview with the record Ghana goal scorer.

He indicated, however, that he will make his experience and knowledge readily available for the development of sports in the country.

Gyan is the chairman of the Sports Sub-Committee of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s manifesto committee.

He is expected to help the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, in the area of sports, come out with a strategic manifesto for the December 7 elections.

He has since launched the All Regional Games, a maiden multi-sport competition which is expected to unveil sports talents in the country.

A regional tour is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, April 16 until next month ahead of the national championships.

Mahama Is Coming For Revenge, Don’t Vote For Him- Nicholas Omane Acheampong

0

Nicholas Omane Acheampong

Renowned Ghanaian musician, Nicholas Omane Acheampong, has urged Ghanaians not to cast their votes for former President John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming elections. According to him, Mahama has no future elections to contest, hence he has nothing to lose and would consequently subject the people of Ghana to hardship if given another chance in office.

In a video message that has rapidly circulated on social media platforms, Acheampong emphasized the importance of electing a president who is accountable and challenged to perform better by the prospect of future elections.

He expressed concern that Mahama’s return to power would only bring about revenge and retribution, rather than progress and development for the nation.

“Mahama is coming for revenge. He is coming to pay the people of Ghana back for voting him out in 2016. He does not have any election to contest so he should not be considered,” Acheampong declared in the viral video.

He urged the electorate to instead vote for a candidate who would actively seek their support in future elections, thereby remaining accountable to the people.”

“Let’s vote for someone who will come and beg for our votes so that he will be accountable, not someone who does not have any election ahead of him,” Acheampong emphasized.

He cautioned that allowing Mahama to assume the presidency once more would lead to increased suffering and hardship for the citizens of Ghana.

Acheampong’s remarks come amidst heightened political fervour in Ghana as the country prepares for its upcoming elections.

His passionate plea serves as a reminder to voters to carefully consider the implications of their choices and to prioritize candidates who demonstrate a commitment to the welfare and progress of the nation.

7 Die In Galamsey Pits

0

Scores of uncovered pits left behind by illegal miners are posing serious threat to residents of some mining communities in the Nzema areas of the Western Region.

About seven of the residents have recently fallen into the pits, leading to their untimely deaths.

Four of the deceased were from Nkroful, two were from Anwia and one from Telekubokazo.

Mrs. Elizabeth Allua Vaah, Executive Director of Ghana Environmental Advocacy Group, revealed this at a press conference and sensitisation programme organised over the weekend by the group at Bankata in the Ellembelle District.

It was on the theme: “Our Dying Rivers – An Uncertain Future,” and was organised in conjunction with local environmental advocates in the Nzema area.

She noted that irresponsible surface mining has destroyed the area’s forests, land, and rivers and continues to pose an existential threat to the people.

“We have therefore brought the press here today to say to the world that enough is enough,” she stated.

She asserted that the people are drinking mercury and lead-contaminated water, as well as eating staple foods, fruits and fishes that have been contaminated with the poisonous metals.

She bemoaned the current sorry state of rivers Ankobra, Birim, Broma, Butre, Offin, Pra, Subile and Tano among others, and called on all to join in their resolve to help curb the galamsey menace.

“Today, at Aiyinasi Sendu, Adjei Obeng Krom, Anwia, Abelebo, Egila Eshiem, Banso, Dadieso, and others, our lands are being poisoned by foreigners and Ghanaians fronting for foreigners,” she disclosed.

She said the increase in diseases associated with mercury, lead, arsenic, and cyanide poisoning was just a herald to what could befall the country’s unborn generations.

Madam Vaah attributed the decrease in the country’s cocoa production partly to the activities of illegal miners, adding, “And the little we have too could be contaminated.”

“If our political leaders have let us down, we are appealing to our esteemed Nananom, who are the custodians of the land to intervene and help protect our forests, and water bodies,” she stated.

Barcelona decide on Xavi replacement – report –

0

Barcelona have decided that they will promote Rafael Marquez to first-team manager if they find themselves forced to replace Xavi this summer, a report claims.

Xavi confirmed earlier this year that he plans to step down at the end of the season and, amid several calls for him to stay on and continue the club’s impressive run of form, he recently stressed he will not change his mind.

According to SPORT, Barcelona are no longer looking for a replacement for Xavi and have decided that if they cannot convince the current boss to continue, they will turn to Marquez.

The former Mexico international, who spent seven years as a player at Camp Nou between 2003 and 2010, has impressed since returning to the club to take charge of Barca Atletic, and the report claims he is now the only candidate under consideration to replace Xavi.

While hope of keeping Xavi has not yet vanished, his insistence that nothing could change his mind has left club officials aware that they may be fighting a losing battle.

Marquez could be Barcelona’s next manager / Alex Caparros/GettyImages

Barcelona have searched for possible replacements for Xavi but have now ruled out moves for managers with high termination clauses, such as Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim or Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi.

Former Germany manager Hansi Flick is seen as the only feasible external candidate as he is available for free, but concerns over his inexperience in Spain and high salary demands have seen club officials cool talk of a move for Flick.

As a result, the focus is now on Marquez, whose knowledge of the club’s academy also works in his favour.

Marquez will be promoted to first-team coach only if president Joan Laporta fails to convince Xavi to stay on. He hopes to keep Xavi and will spend the next few weeks trying to reach a positive resolution with the current boss before switching his attention to Marquez.

‘Fa no Fom’ better than all Daddy Lumba’s hit songs – Dj Azonto –

0

DJ Azonto has indicated that his song “Fa ne Fom” beats all the songs produced by legendary Daddy Lumba.

He says the song became a nationwide hit and has crossed the shores of the country.

Dj Azonto who was speaking on Accra-based Onua FM indicated any form of parameter used to compare his one-time hit song with that of Daddy Lumba will put his song ahead of the highlife artiste.

“I’ve said and continue to say that my hit song is bigger than all Daddy Lumba songs he has produced. I make a lot of money from my song. I share my song with ditto.com and they pay me handsomely. The last time I was going to London I was paid one hundred thousand pounds by ditto.com so this must tell you the kind of people listening to my songs.

Daddy Lumba’s songs cannot do the kind of magic my song has done and continues to do so there is no need to compare it. People may not agree but I insist that fa no fom is a hit monster and has done more than all Daddy Lumba’s hit songs,” he said.

Lt Gen Thomas Oppong Peprah, CDS

Two civilians have tragically lost their lives after a group of individuals launched an attack on the Tema Naval Base of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The deaths of these two individuals were confirmed in a press release issued by the Ghana Armed Forces on April 13, detailing the events that transpired leading to the civilians’ fatalities.

As per the statement signed by Director General, Public Relations, Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quarshie, a vehicle belonging to the Eastern Naval Command of the Ghana Navy was assaulted by a crowd participating in a ‘Kplejoo’ festival at Tema Newtown around 7:53pm on Friday, April 12, 2024, resulting in significant damage to the vehicle.

Additionally, three Naval personnel aboard the vehicle sustained severe injuries and were promptly transported to the Tema Naval Base Medical Centre for urgent medical attention.

Ex-Bayern Munich manager ‘under serious consideration’ for Liverpool job –

0

Former Bayern Munich manager Niko Kovac is a surprise candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, according to a report.

90min understands while Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim is currently the leading contender for the job, an agreement has not been finalised and Liverpool are still hoping to interview three candidates.

The Daily Mail report that Kovac, who managed Bayern between 2018 and 2019, is ‘under serious consideration’ to fill the vacancy at Anfield.

The Croatian’s representatives sounded out his availability to Premier League clubs during a recent trip to London, hoping to secure him a return to management having been sacked by Wolfsburg last month.

Kovac’s short stint in charge of Bayern saw him claim three trophies, but they were notably eliminated from the 2018/19 Champions League by eventual winners Liverpool.

He was also the Bayern manager who oversaw their 7-2 victory away at Tottenham Hotspur in the group stage of the following Champions League campaign. However, he left the Bavarian giants by mutual consent following a 5-1 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt a few weeks later.

After leaving Bayern, Kovac was appointed as the head coach of Monaco in the summer of 2020. He led them to the Coupe de France final and qualification to the play-off round of the Champions League during his only full season at the helm, stepping down midway through the 2021/22 campaign.

Kovac’s most recent job was at Wolfsburg, where once again he departed in his second season. During his one full campaign – the 2022/23 season – Wolfsburg missed out on Europa League qualification by just one point to Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen. He has since been replaced at the Volkswagen Arena by former Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Chiefs have critical roles to play in local governance – Governance Expert

0

By P.K. Yankey

Takoradi, April 15, GNA –  Mr Yaw Adu-Gyamfi, a Governance Expert, says traditional authorities must bring to bear their leadership expertise to advance the structures of local governance in the country.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview, he described chiefs as regal ombudsmen and women, who could contribute to the decision-making process towards the development of the various districts.

He said it was imperative for local government authorities to ensure that they involved traditional rulers more in their development planning processes for accelerated growth.

Mr Adu-Gyamfi, for instance, said: “When it comes to issues of conflict, traditional leaders often have experience in conflict resolution and mediation, so their presence in the assemblies can help in resolving disputes and promoting harmony within the community”.

“When we talk about community engagement, chiefs are often respected and influential figures within their communities, so their involvement in the Assemblies can help in engaging the community and encourage participation in local governance.”

Chiefs could also contribute to the preservation and promotion of traditional knowledge, customs, and practices within the assembly, ensuring that these important aspects of Ghanaian culture were upheld.

“They can also play a role in identifying and prioritizing local development initiatives, drawing on their knowledge of the community’s needs and aspirations,” he added.

Mr Adu-Gyamfi underscored the importance of involving traditional authorities in their respective assemblies to help bridge the gap between traditional and modern local governance to guarantee inclusive and culturally sensitive decision-making processes.

IMF 2nd Review: Govt Reaches Staff-Level Agreement

IMF, BoG and Finance Ministry officials after the press conference

Ghana has reached a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the second review of the country’s economic programme under the Extended Credit Facility arrangement.

This staff-level agreement is subject to IMF Management approval and Executive Board consideration once the necessary financing assurances have been received.

Upon completion of the Executive Board review, Ghana would have access to about US$ 360 million (SDR 269.1 million), bringing the total IMF financial support disbursed under the arrangement since May 2023 to US$ 1,560 million (SDR 1,171.9 million).

The IMF staff team, led by Stéphane Roudet, Mission Chief for Ghana, held meetings in Accra during April 2-12, 2024 with officials of the Ministry of Finance and Bank of Ghana, to discuss progress on reforms and the authorities’ policy priorities in the context of the second review of Ghana’s three-year programme under the Extended Credit Facility.

At the end of the mission, Mr. Roudet said, “I am pleased to announce that IMF staff and the Ghanaian authorities have reached a staff-level agreement on the second review of Ghana’s economic programme under the Extended Credit Facility arrangement.”

According to him, an agreement between Ghana and their official creditors on a MoU for debt treatment in line with programme parameters will provide the needed financing assurances.

“Performance under the IMF-supported programme has been generally strong, with most quantitative targets met. Good progress has also been made on the key structural reform milestones,” the IMF Mission Chief said.

He added, “The authorities’ policies and reforms to restore macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability while laying the foundations for stronger and more inclusive growth are already generating positive results.”

He asserted that economic activity in 2023 was more robust than initially envisaged, and growth projections for 2024 will be revised upward.

Mr. Roudet indicated that monetary policy had remained appropriately tight, allowing for inflation to decline rapidly.

“On the fiscal front, consistent with the authorities’ commitments under the IMF-supported programme, the fiscal primary balance on a commitment basis improved by over 4 percentage points of GDP in 2023 and is on track to achieve a fiscal primary surplus of ½ percent of GDP in 2024.

“Spending has remained within budget limits, while the authorities have significantly expanded social protection programmes to help mitigate the impact of the crisis on the most vulnerable,” he noted.

He pointed out that Ghana had met its non-oil revenue mobilisation target, while making progress in implementing ambitious structural fiscal reforms to bolster domestic revenues, strengthen public financial and debt management, and enhance transparency.

“The external sector has improved significantly, with international reserve accumulation ahead of programme objectives. Financial stability has been preserved, with banks posting solid profits in 2023,” he posited.

Mr. Roudet continued, “Given Ghana’s strong progress under the IMF-supported programme, the next key step for the country is to reach an agreement with its official bilateral creditors on a MoU consistent with the terms agreed in January 2024.”

According to him, the IMF looks forward to the authorities’ continued efforts to reach an agreement with all creditors in line with programme parameters.

He, on behalf of the IMF staff team, expressed their gratitude to the Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam and his team as well the BoG Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison and staff for their continued open and constructive engagement.

Mikel Arteta could welcome a former Manchester United defender to his backroom staff as Gabriel Heinze is reportedly in talks with Arsenal’s coaching department.

The Gunners boss has previously welcomed set-piece coach Nicolas Jover from Manchester City and goalkeeper coach Inaki Cana from Brentford to bolster his backroom staff. With success showing on the pitch from these appointments, Arsenal could soon offer a position to Heinze, who enjoyed successful spells at United and Real Madrid.

Despite being just 45-years-old, Heinze has already managed five different clubs, with his most recent appointment being with Newell’s Old Boys for 50 games.

ESPN Argentina report that Arteta and Heinze were seen at a youth match in Madrid together, and since have both travelled to London.

Heinze is said to be weighing up the chance to join Arsenal’s coaching staff or continue his own managerial career in his native Argentina.

Several of Arsenal’s current coaches have been linked with a move away this summer, with the squad impressing in both the Premier and Champions League.

Arteta currently relies on Albert Stuivenberg and Carlos Cuesta as two of his main assistants at the Emirates. Stuivenberg is expected to depart and become a manager himself, with links to the Ajax job on the cards, whereas Cuesta has been linked to Norwich City.

The Spanish boss will now be on the lookout for someone to fill the vacant backroom seats and is believed to favour former Paris Saint-Germain teammate Heinze. The pair played together during the 2001/02 season and are said to have maintained a strong relationship since.

Reports also state that Heinze has a number of positions on offer, including taking over Argentinian top flight side San Lorenzo as manager.

Alejandro Garnacho likes social media posts criticising Erik ten Hag decisions –

0

Alejandro Garnacho liked two posts on social media that criticised manager Erik ten Hag in the wake of Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on Saturday.

The 19-year-old was withdrawn at half-time of the game, with Ten Hag later singling Garnacho’s performance out after the game by admitting he felt the team needed more quality down the right wing.

United fan and broadcaster Mark Goldbridge took to X after the match to criticise Ten Hag’s decision to call out Garnacho, who is behind only Bruno Fernandes on United’s goals and assists charts, and claim that the United boss was “scared of upsetting the bigger earners” in the squad.

Garnacho was seen liking both posts before eventually removing his reaction.

This is not the first time Garnacho has liked posts involving Ten Hag’s decision to substitute him. Earlier this month, he liked a post questioning his withdrawal from the game against Chelsea, and that reaction remains active at the time of writing.

Ten Hag repeatedly highlighted shortcomings on United’s right side after the game before admitting he substituted Garnacho to “repair” his side.

“That [Dominic] Solanke was dropping in, we didn’t anticipate, something to do with our organisation, that is something I point to, you need some coaching there then you stop it at the source,” he explained.

“In the second phase it was too easy, on the right side there was a big gap and Kluivert should never get that ball there but if [he does] then we have to close it, that’s clear and obvious.

“I think we had to repair over that right side. We didn’t play well, the spaces were there in possession, we had to bring a sub there.

“Garnacho was not training during the week, only yesterday, we thought bring some energy, bring some more quality, quality in the sense of co-operation, togetherness over that right side.”

16-year-old battles for his life after assault over alleged missing manhood –

0

A 16-year-old boy is fighting for his life after being attacked and severely beaten for allegedly stealing someone’s manhood in Dansoman Shaibu, located in the Ablekuma West Municipality of the Greater Accra region.

The incident reportedly took place on Friday, April 5, 2024.

The victim, identified as Bright Lartey, is a special needs child. According to his mother, Linda Yeboah, she usually leaves Bright in the care of her younger sister when she goes to work. However, when she returned home on Friday evening, Bright was not at home. Upon inquiry, she was informed that he had gone to play with friends.

Despite this not being the first time Bright had left the house alone, Linda expressed hope that her son would return home safely.

“Shockingly, I was home when I had a notification on my phone. I opened and saw a video which captured my son being severely beaten. I rushed out to find out what the problem was and was told he stole someone’s manhood after asking for money to buy water. He had already been taken to the Police station when I got to the scene,” she narrated amidst tears.

The distressed mother described how Bright sustained a head injury from the assault, leaving him struggling to walk and in intense pain.

“He can’t even eat, drink water or do anything by himself. He was rushed to the Dansoman Polyclinic for treatment, where a lot of cost has been incurred,” she added.

The victim’s father, Ebenezer Lartey who spoke in the same interview revealed they were asked to do an and X-ray and CT scan due to the physical injuries to ascertain if there were any internal injuries too.

“We went to Medilife for the scan and upon return to the polyclinic, the doctor told us two of his fingers are fractured and also has internal bleeding in his head,” he stated.

According to his father, Bright has been referred to Korle Bu Hospital for a head surgery, but the family is unsure how to finance the procedure. Bright’s case adds to the rising number of mob actions triggered by false accusations of missing manhood in various parts of the country.
