At the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, “Megalopolis”, “Furiosa”, “Emilia Perez”… the ten most anticipated films

Cannes 2024 – It’s (soon) time for 12 days of cinema on the Croisette. And for this 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which takes place from May 14 to 25, moviegoers are served with the 80 films presented, between official selection and additional competitions. An adaptation of a novel from French literature, a five-star cast gathered around Francis Ford Coppola and the return of an animated film in the official selection After 16 years, here (in part) is what we can expect festival-goers.

Megalopolis

A mix between science fiction and Roman epic, the plot pits two men with divergent ambitions against each other. One wants to maintain his hold on the city he governs while the other wants to build a utopia. The names of Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Giancarlo Esposito and Dustin Hoffman are listed in the end credits.

Francis Ford Coppola returns behind the camera for this film he has been working on for years. Megalopoliswhose release date has not yet been announced, is presented by its director who hopes to leave with a new Palme d’Or, 35 years after the last.

Furiosa: a Mad Max saga

First film announced out of competition in this selection, Furiosa: a Mad Max saga is the prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road released in 2015. Charlize Theron, who played the character of Furiosa nine years earlier, gives way to Anya Taylor-Joy who plays Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke.

In this fifth film from the universe of Mad Max by George Miller, we discover the origins of Furiosa. Torn from her family when she was just a child, she will do everything to return home. Furiosa: a Mad Max saga is screened in cinemas from May 22.

The Second Act

Quentin Dupieux brings together Louis Garrel, Vincent Lindon, Raphaël Quenard, Léa Seydoux and Manuel Guillot for his out-of-competition film which opens the 2024 Festival. The Second Act, Florence wants to introduce David, the man she loves, to her father Guillaume. But David is not on the same wavelength and will push her into the arms of his friend Willy. The film hits theaters on May 14.

Kinds of Kindness

After Poor Creatures screened at the beginning of the year, Yórgos Lánthimos reunites with Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe for Kinds of Kindness. This film tells three parallel stories: a man wants to take control of his own life, another is worried because his wife who disappeared at sea has not been the same since her return, and a woman is looking for someone who must become a prodigious spiritual leader. The film hits theaters on June 26.

Love phew

Inspired by the novel of the same name by Neville Thomson, Love phew stars Adèle Exarchopoulos and François Civil in the roles of Jackie and Clotaire, two young adults who have been madly in love since high school who will do everything not to be separated. You will have to wait until October 16 to see Gilles Lellouche’s sixth film in the cinema.

the count of Monte Cristo

The work of Alexandre Dumas returns to the big screen after the adaptation of the novel The three Musketeers last year. Pierre Niney plays Edmond Dantès, a man who was betrayed and seeks revenge after spending 14 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. the count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre De La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte hits theaters on June 28.

The Most Precious of Goods

Taken from the book by Jean-Claude Grumberg, this animated film is directed by Michel Hazanavicius. During the Second World War, a couple of Polish lumberjacks found a baby near a train and decided to adopt him. This is the first time since 2008 that an animated film has been presented in the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival. Scheduled to be released in cinemas on November 20.

Emilia Perez

In this musical comedy by Jacques Audiard, a lawyer helps a cartel leader withdraw from the criminal world to pursue his dream: becoming a woman. Selena Gomez, Zoé Saldaña and transgender actress Karla Sofía Gascón star. Emilia Perez is expected in theaters from August 28.

Horizon: An American Saga

First of four chapters planned by Kevin Costner, this western immerses spectators in the conquest of the American West. In addition to directing the film, the actor stars in it alongside Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington and Giovanni Ribisi. Horizon: An American Saga is presented out of competition and in world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Trial of the Dog

Avril is a lawyer who has sworn to win her next case, but has a setback when her new client asks her to defend Cosmos, his dog. This is when the dog’s trial begins.

Presented in the Un certain regard selection, The Trial of the Dog is Laetitia Dosch’s first film and she directs François Damiens, Jean-Pascal Zadi and Mathieu Demy. Release scheduled for the start of the school year, September 11.
