Neram, the 2013-released black comedy film helmed by Alphonse Puthren has been considered one of the path-breaking collaborations of Malayalam and Tamil film industries. Neram is one of those rare black comedy films that succeeded in striking a chord with the audiences. Director Alphonse Puthren made a mark with this extremely well-made movie, which depicted the story of a youngster (Mathew in Malayalam/Vetri in Tamil), an unemployed computer science graduate who is going through a tough time in his life.

Nivin Pauly and Nazriya Nazim’s chemistry

The popular Malayalam actors established themselves as one of the most loved onscreen pairs of Malayalam film industry, initially with the Nenjodu Cherthu song video and later with their performances in Neram. Nazriya Nazim played the role of Mathew/Vetri’s girlfriend (Jeena in Malayalam, Veni in Tamil), who elopes with him after her father disapproves of their relationship.

Neram is one of those rare bilinguals, that created the same impact in both the Malayalam and Tamil languages – that too with two different star cast. The Alphonse Puthren directorial catered to both the Malayalam and Tamil cinema audiences, at a time when the language barrier existed and stayed true to the cultures of both the states.

As mentioned before, the Malayalam and Tamil versions of Neram had different sets of actors, barring the lead pair – Nivin Pauly and Nazriya Nazim, the lead antagonist Vatti Raja, played by Bobby Simha, and a couple of others. The Tamil version featured Ramesh Thilak, Thambi Ramaiah, Nassar, John Vijay, Ananth Nag, Sai Prashanth, and others in the supporting roles.

The music score

The excellent music score, especially the songs composed by Rajesh Murugesan created a massive impact among both the Tamil and Malayalam audiences, at the time of the film’s release. Especially, the Pistah song which is originally written by legendary actor Jagathy Sreekumar and remixed in the film, and the romantic number Kadhal Ennulle sung by Ranjith, remain the favourites of audience.
