And So It Goes

A Take on the May Challenge

Previously on the Inside, Now Looking at

Things a Bit Differently . . .

The recent news about NAR has caused much talk in the blogosphere on this and similar forums. Articles, reports and opinions aplenty in the everyday world can inform as well as confuse us. Besides the weather, isn't this industry cause for cocktail party-like chatter? Constantly and consistently. Get in line. This buffet line is getting crowded.

However, I admit it doesn’t take up a lot of space in my brain.  Sure, I left much of realty life behind me a few years ago but my sense of things going on can extend beyond the immediate.  Mind you, I am not ignoring the present. However, perspective is a companion even when I may not be on the friendliest terms with it.

Oh, the complexity about the simplicity of it all! I have seen this show before.   Like change or evolution, what's happening now isn't new. Not exactly. Not in real estate.  Nor in other parts of everyday life.  Although familiar; the shifts, players involved, and plot twists can make keeping up with the “news” challenging.

Fast and Furious is not just the familiar theme of an action movie series but how information seems to be delivered to us. In multiple ways, it's too much and too soon. Announcements are repeated and rehashed.  Over and over again. Am I sounding like a broken record?

I digress. Yes, that’s a hypothetical question above with a bit of hyperbole thrown in to reflect my cynical side.  Some may say, snarky - that’s okay - call it what you want.

And like perception, definitions and many sorts of things combine in our world wherever "we live" right now.  In this industry.  And in numerous parts of our life in the past.  Likely in the future.  And far after leaving this planet (or even this career or platform).

We each do what works best for us.  In the moment. Maybe a bit longer too.  What we do (or did) in our early years in real estate captures(d) some of it.  Differentiation but not too dissimilar. Unique but wearing the required uniformity at times as absolutely required. Yes, it's simply complicated.

A closer analysis might show signs of what was on the horizon.  If only we could predict what was coming next. Yeah, what if.

Afterall, it’s a journey.  Mixed up.  Separated.  Combined. Tossed about.  Rinse.  Repeat.  Try again.

Although sports analogies are not my forte, it’s a marathon in countless ways, right? I'm talking about life. As for real estate, we shall see how it goes.

This is my not-so-typical submission-of-sorts for the AR May Challenge hosted by Kathy Streib and Debe Maxwell, CRS.

And because it's my interpretation of this challenge, I am including this quote because it fits for me.

In three words,

I can sum up everything I've learned about life:

It goes on.

As always so enjoy reading your philosophical contemplation.  As much as things become complex there is the effort to simplify and then when simplified there are folks who want the thing to be more complex. The ongoing circle of complexity and simplicity. My simple take - Follow the money.

Leanne Smith - following the money can lead us in many directions.  Treasure and things more disastrous.  Oh, the capers we have seen. . .

Hello, Michael.

Here's my three-cent thought (the price increased due to inflation!).

We change constantly, but we're not changing ourselves; it is not the change that defines us but how we learn to cope with it, mainly the swift and piercing winds of transformation that vex us with the severing and alteration of relationships, priorities, and perspectives that come with advancing age.

And so it goes...🌔🌓🌒🌑

Aura Alex - I'm about 2/3 way through reading, How To Know A Person by David Brooks.  It speaks to me as I continue to learn more about myself, others and how the art of that "relationship" works.

Are you talking about David Brooks, a Commentator and writer for NY Magazine? I have always liked his opinions. I don't see him much anymore, but I will check into his book. I (always) like your book suggestions. Thank you.

Aura Alex - yes, that David Brooks.  He has a couple of books that I have read and learned from too.  I think his journalism expertise helps keep his writing concise.

Hi Michael,
We often make things more complicated than they are. The most complex piece of art is made up of thousands of single strokes, one at a time. EVERY thing in life is like that. Whatever we are facing, it's about one step at a time—hopefully headed in the right direction.

I know to expect change, in one form or another.  I can't get too excited about any industry announcement, they rarely tend to meet the Chicken Little or Pollyanna ends of the spectrums, but somewhere in the middle and probably less disruptive than early announcements warn.  I'm also of the belief that no industry deserves to survive unless it adds value.  If real estate agents do not continue to add a value that people are willing to pay for, we will also go the way of the buggy whip makers.  In any case, I'll be staring out over the valley within the next year or so and my caring factor will decrease accordingly.

Bill Liz and Bill Spear - I love a good buggy whip maker reference.  😃

I'll break out the buggy whip reference every few years :)
I hope the industry avoids that fate not by the power of mega $$$ and lobbyists, but rather by earning the trust of consumers in a case by case basis as we bust our butts to safely guide them through major decisions.  Only time will tell, there are few sacred cows outside of politicians once seated.

Bill Liz and Bill Spear - I imagine there might be a place (albeit a small segment) for buggy whips even now.  As for sacred cows, they also definitely moooooove among us.  🐄🐮🐮

As always, Michael...I loved your perspective and owe you a big Thank You for participating in this month's challenge. Oddly enough, when I am in my sphere, no one discusses real estate or what's going on with the NAR thing. (I might add that I don't "hang out" with agents here). Nothing is static or unchanging. If you think so, hang around for a few years and you'll see!!!

Kathy Streib - a few years ago, I started responding, "as little as possible and I do plenty of it" when asked, What do you do???.   Besides the often startled look on their face, it often provides an interesting lead to a conversation.  Or dead silence.  HaHa.

Thank you for co-hosting this month's challenge.

Good morning Michael Jacobs ,

I'm so glad that Carol Williams featured your musings for the May contest. I always like to read your philosophical take and was certainly not disappointed in your perspective. I agree with you and loved the imagery - after the weather, real estate is the most talked about topic, and a lot of people are in a hurry to have a position and to voice somebody else's opinion as theirs, too, on the buffet line. The end note is in tune - Life goes on.

I truly enjoyed your post, Michael. 21 years ago now, I wrote my master's thesis about "Infotainment in US American local news", and that is what I am constantly reminded of when I scroll through my news feed. One certain "news" channel is actually an infotainment channel but the general public seems unaware. Only bad news is good news, we all need to keep that in mind as to why the settlement made such (outrageous) headlines. It is also precisely what I discuss with clients. So far, I've only been met with headshaking and not-so-kind words about the attorneys who are the only ones to gain from this.

May 13, 2024 08:14 AM
Michael Jacobs

Andrea Bedard - there may be an infinite number of ways (as well as digits) to finger point to the shift we see "out there".  I often think one (maybe more) of those signs can be pointed inward as I remain responsible for not only what I consume and digest but also how easily it goes down.

That's my take on food for thought.  I remember when the television network newsrooms were transformed to entertainment.  Talk about consequences, huh.  Oh, well - oops.  Thank you for your comment.  I appreciate it.

What a WONDERFUL perspective, Michael - as ALWAYS! I'm 100% with you - I am a no-drama person and when drama in work (or life in general) rears its ugly head, I quietly bow out and focus energies where I feel I need to be focusing. The current hoopla in our business is simply another hurdle that we must overcome. My mission is always how to 'figure it out' with grace and keep moving forward. Those who adapt, succeed.

One of my favorite quotes from Erma Bombeck, "If I had my life to live over again, I would have waxed less and listened more. … I would have cried and laughed less while watching television … and more while watching real life. … But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute of it … look at it and really see it … try it on … live it … exhaust it … and never give the minute back until there was nothing left of it."

Thank you so much for sharing your perspective with us, Michael. I love your fresh approach to life. Thank you also, for the book recommendation. I'm going to have to check it out. I'm wrapping up  The Rosie Effect by Graeme Simsion. It was a book series (of 3), starting with The Rosie Project that was recommended to me as our family navigates our grandson's (Liam) DSM-4 (Autism, Asperger's) diagnosis. Anyhow, I plan to read your David Brooks recommendation next.

Pat Starnes-Front Gate Realty - while my musical knowledge is limited, I am familiar with the song.  Along with my basic Spanish comprehension/speaking, I commend you for that ability too.  Plus because of my appreciation of movies, I am also aware of Doris Day's role in the Alfred Hitchcock film, The Man Who Knew Too Much where it was the Academy Award winner for original song.

My rabbit hole way of gathering information informs me that it was a popular song in 1956.  Reading wikipedia confirms what my Mom told me which makes me recall your recent post about roofs plus your son.  How's that for some circular thinking?  Thanks for the comment.  🐰
