Sea of Stars vs. Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes

Question

Sea of Stars vs. Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes

If I only have the time for one, which is the better JRPG?

I value story above all else. Would be nice if characters are likeable, charming, etc. Humor is always appreciated.

I'm very familiar with the genre having beaten about a dozen or so throughout my life, but by no means a hardcore JRPGer.

I also don't really enjoy particularly challenging games. I don't mind grinding a bit. I just don't like anything frustratingly difficult or systems that are too complicated.

Adding a poll for the hell of it.

Eiyuden and it's not even remotely close.

u/Liquidmetalslimeno9 avatar

This is not even close, even with my strong suikoden bias. I wanted to like Sea of Star, no ....I wanted to LOVE it , but I just didn't

I couldn't even finish it and put it down even though I'm sure I was near the end, I no longer had the desire to continue.

I think the developers made an effort for sure, but it just didn't come out as strong as they probably would have liked.

The writing is very basic, the main characters are not very interesting, the story is all over the place, and the combat system, while fun at first, eventually devolves into simply trying to trigger the "break" for every single fight, which unintentionally takes away a ton of autonomy from the player.

Sea of stars for as beautiful as it looked, and the amount of charm it was supposed to have, was a v.ery underwhelming game.

I'm almost finished with Eiyuden. No it's not suikoden 2, and it has its flaws, but as a comparison between the two Indy jrpgs, it's not close..

Go with Eiyuden if your choices are between SOS and Eiyuden.

I hope Eiyuden gets a sequel and builds off the world they have established in this game, with an few improvements the next game could be a legitimate classic as there is so much potential, but Eiyuden is still a ton of fun.

Sea of Stars is actually mid outside of it being a pretty game. The characters fucking suck except se'rai.

Eiyuden while not having that much depth compared to suikoden, was still overall a way better game.

u/weglarz avatar

What depth does suikoden have that EC doesn’t? Dont get me wrong, I love suikoden to death, I’m just not sure the gap in quality is related to depth. IMO it’s more about overall writing quality and feel.

u/Major_Plantain3499 avatar

I think the main cast is nowhere near as fleshed out compared to the ones i've played which is 1,2 and 5. but I also get that there's 3 parties, but I really wish some things were written out, I think Nowa isn't bad, I think he's fine as a shonen-ish protag, but I wish we had a viktor or Flik, to be fair im only 15 hours in though, but I would expect to find one by now

u/weglarz avatar

I kinda felt like the wolf was viktor. Haven’t really seen a flik yet either, other than maybe someone I saw but haven’t recruited yet

u/Major_Plantain3499 avatar

The Wolf feels like he isn't too relevant for that long except for a couple convos in the beginning

As critical as I've been of Eiyuden, I would still put it over Sea of Stars. A few extra scenes would have helped EC actually reach its potential but SoS would require a lot more work to be worth it. I'd still maybe wait on EC until it's had another patch or two to fix some of the remaining bugs.

EC: HH needs some polish; bug fixes, QoL changes, and some DLC is on the way as well. Even with all those missing stuff, it has more depth and more interesting than Sea of Stars. If you want to wait for those fixes to come you should play Sea of Stars and wait until Q4 of 2024 to tackle Eiyuden Chronicles. I'll still favor, Eiyuden, and if you're on PC cheat engine and some mods could save a lot of headaches with EC:HH even in early stage.

What about including Chained echoes as a choice?

u/weglarz avatar

Chained echoes was legit for sure.

u/Puzzleheaded-Try-687 avatar

Chained Echoes is much much much better than Sea of Stars.

Both were kinda disappointing tbh. But that’s how it usually goes with these “spiritual successor” jrpgs. If I had to choose I’d pick EC.

u/-NotEnoughMinerals avatar

Easy.

Chained echoes.

u/FaerieWolfStudios avatar

Eiyuden Chronicles' dialogue alone is miles ahead of Sea of Stars. Sea of Stars writing is the worst aspect of the game, so if story and writing is important to you, it's not even close that EC is the better game.

I'm about to give up on Eiyuden Chronicles. I'm 22h in and 66 characters recruited. Barely anyone in the cast is interesting, the story is not very good.

The game is also too easy and I've made all but ~15 combats without auto battle. And for those I did without auto battle, it was just to be able to control healing but the bosses never actually were a threat. You're not playing the game, essentially.

I was expecting a lot from the game but honestly, I don't understand the praises it got.

I know this sub dislikes Sea of Stars but I have to admit I was surprised to see Eiyuden get way more votes.

Which is fine by me, Eiyuden is my pick too.

Keep in mind tho that Eiyuden is a flawed game. I really enjoy it but I think Sea of Stars has it beat on QoL and being more “modern” feeling. That being said, I just like EC way more. Personally I think they’re both fairly equal in terms of overall writing quality but SoS’ narrative tries to do more than its writers can handle. EC’s story is pretty basic and simple but (aside from a few things) doesn’t do a bad job of telling it. I prefer a simple story that’s delivered competently than a story that tries to juggle various things and fails cuz its writers aren’t very good.

Also, based on your last sentence, I’d maybe recommend playing Eiyuden on Normal instead of Hard. I’m enjoying my Hard playthrough but the combat system is nowhere near robust enough to justify a higher difficulty (for most people at least). It’s less that hard mode makes things more difficult and therefore more engaging, and more that it just draws fights out longer/makes it so you have to have a lot of healing items on hand to heal in between random battles.

u/Puzzleheaded-Try-687 avatar

Haven't got around to playing Eiyuden Chronicles yet, but Sea of Stars is shit. So definitely play Eiyuden Chronicle.

u/samososo avatar

Are those all your options, cause damn I can't regard either w/ good story. They have a story

This shouldn't even be a question. SoS the most overrated JRPG of the last 5 years at least. Game got nothing going on for it but it's looks and sound.

EC while not perfect has a shitload to offer.

I love Eiyuden Chronicle but I think this game is a bit traditional after I playing for a while, and you may need some investment before understand them. There are some QoL is missing (like you cannot fast travel at the beginning, character walking is a bit slow, there is no fast forward in battle, no event marker, etc.). This game has QoL like FFXII for me. System is not complicated and it is not that much difficult, but it take a bit of time to learn. Some feature also not tell you right away such as weapon range, and it takes awhile before I know it.

In the other hand, Sea of Stars is make for causal player. System are pretty simple. If you played Mario + Luigi RPG game. It is not difficult, but I think it is a bit too easy. Story is simple, and character is kinda okay, but I personally give story and, especially characters to Eiyuden.

I still recommend Eiyuden as you familiar with JRPG. (I also personally like character in Eiyuden) but you should play on XBOX PASS for the first hours, and see if you vibe with it, because it take me awhile to vibe with it.

Eiyudenn but they're both pretty mid in all honesty and if you want a good indie old school rpg you should actually go with Chained Echoes instead of either of them

I want to play Eiyuden Chronicle based on this scene alone:

https://youtu.be/yZFDXXiDKNw?si=ASZWURV3W_J9dhjm

But if you only have a Switch avoid getting it. You can look it up online but it's a disastrous port with bad performance, load times and constant crashes. It is on Game Pass though and isn't very demanding from what I tested.

neither is the best option

Sea of Stars starts pretty good but I felt it dropped off hard. Wasn't a fan of the true ending either. Still a decent game.

I'm currently playing EC and have about 20 hours so far. Maybe EC drops off too but as of right now, I'm having more fun with this one.

u/dukenny avatar

Both

The story is probably on the same level, but SoS has a very likable cast. EC has a looooot of characters and while a lot of them are great, it can get a bit overwhelming too. SoS also does a great job of making sure that you're levelled just right at any point in the game so no grinding.

Anyway, I'd pick SoS between the two but you can't go wrong with either.

u/Puzzleheaded-Try-687 avatar

Lol because levels don't frickin matter in Sea of Stars. The enemies level with you. You can beat the game with level 1 and in your starter gear, because level and gear don't matter in this game. And you also never learn any new skills. How is this even called an RPG?!

Damn bro, chill. I was just answering OP's question based on his own description. He's looking for something that isn't too hard, with nothing too frustrating, hence why I picked Sea of Stars. I'm not saying one is better than the other. It's just based on his description.

A battle of shit and piss. One has some of the worst writing i've ever seen in a """"j""""rpg and incredibly dull gameplay mechanics that become old 5 hours into the game. Another is a PG10 game with quality of life worse than most PS1 era jrpgs.

If you have a time for one JRPG, play virtually anything else. Play any PS1 or PS2 jrpg you can get your hands on.

Sea of Stars wins by a mile </thread>

I've only played about 10-12 hours of each but just from that Eiyuden is definitely better. Sea of stars just wasn't fun for me. I dropped it. I plan to continue Eiyuden though
