The overall voter turnout in 49 constituencies across six states and two union territories that went to polls in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on Monday stood at 57.47 percent.

Among the seats going to polls, 13 are in Maharashtra, 14 in Uttar Pradesh, seven in West Bengal, five in Bihar, three in Jharkhand, five in Odisha, one in Jammu and Kashmir and the lone seat in Ladakh. Despite having the least number of seats out of the all the phases, this round is crucial for the BJP as more than 40 are held by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Mumbai saw Bollywood personalities come out to vote. Among those who cast their votes were Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Hema Malini, Dharmendra, Vidya Balan, Janhvi Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in posts in different languages on X, urged voters to go out in large numbers and cast their vote. “As 49 seats across 8 states and UTs go to the polls today in the 5th phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, urging all those whose constituencies are polling today to vote in record numbers…” he said.

Meanwhile, other prominent candidates in the fray include union ministers Piyush Goyal (Mumbai North, Maharashtra), Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti (Fatehpur, UP) and Shantanu Thakur (Bangaon, WB); LJP (Ram Vilas) leader Chirag Paswan (Hajipur, Bihar), Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde (Kalyan, Maharashtra), and BJP’s Rajiv Pratap Rudy and RJD president Lalu Prasad’s daughter Rohini Acharya (both Saran, Bihar).

More than 8.95 crore people, including 4.26 crore females and 5,409 third-gender electors, are eligible to vote in this round and 9.47 lakh polling officials have been deployed across 94,732 polling stations. So far, the last four phases have registered a total voter turnout of 66.95 per cent.
