Renowned Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan recently shared his insights on the absence of an impact player rule in T20 World Cup 2024. The captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS) joined forces with his national teammates, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, to the impact of the rule in T20 cricket in recent times.

During the IPL 2024 season, teams managed to achieve a total exceeding 250 on a remarkable eight occasions, with Sunrisers Hyderabad setting a new record for the highest total twice in a season. Batsmen have been flourishing, producing significant runs and challenging the depth of the batting lineup due to the impact player rule.

However, the implementation of this rule has notably affected bowlers’ performance and the roles of all-rounders. Both Rohit and Virat have expressed their concerns about the rule, with Shikhar Dhawan now shedding light on how the impact player rule has altered the dynamics of T20 cricket.

At the age of 38, Dhawan emphasized the absence of the impact player rule in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 and emphasized that it will serve as a key differentiator. Shikhar highlighted the potential challenges teams may face in adapting to conditions in the absence of the impact player rule during the prestigious tournament in the USA and West Indies.

“The game itself seems to have undergone a transformation this year, resulting in the emergence of 250-plus scores and a definite shift in mindset,” Dhawan remarked to PTI. “However, entering the World Cup without the presence of the impact player rule will certainly have a noticeable impact. This aspect will be a crucial factor, and our ability to acclimate to the conditions will be paramount. The mindset has shifted following the introduction of the impact player rule. When a batsman in the middle knows that there is depth in the batting lineup until numbers 8 and 9, they are more inclined to adopt an aggressive approach, leading to the high scores we are witnessing.”
