I haven’t read {The Long Game by Elena Armas} so idk who these characters are, but what’s up with the skincolour of the FMC in {The Fiance Dilemma by Elena Armas}? Why is she white as snow on the cover but black on the art print? Anyone else find this odd?* : r/RomanceBooks Skip to main content

i thought it was odd too! i read an arc of this last month and if i’m remembering correctly, the female (josie) is latin american. i can’t exactly remember how she was described in the book, though. but it definitely was weird to me, too! i think someone asked on her insta which tone is more representative of the character but the author hasn’t responded yet.

I’m pretty sure that unless independently published, authors don’t have control over cover art. I’ve also noticed that many MCs of color are significantly white washed in cover art. I wouldn’t be surprised if in this case the cover art was created by the publisher and the poster was actually commissioned by the author and thus actually looks like the characters.

This is my assumption 🫠 that’s gotta be annoying for authors

I mean I’d be fine if she’s a darker skinned latina because Elena writes Latin and Spanish characters but this art work is very odd I wonder if the cover was more so chosen by marketers saying it’d sell better with a lighter skin tone?

It is odd but I'd assume this is just a difference in interpretation. The character on the art print might just have a tan and not necessarily be black.

She’s Latin she was in the last book too because this is a crossover, but even so Latin could be any skin color it’s just odd to have the tones so different, but best guess is cover was a marketing decision.

yeah, wouldn't surprise me if making her lighter skinned on the cover was a marketing decision.

The guy is different too

I thought so too but at least he could pass as having a bit of a tan, not a different ethnicity

One is a curly ginger brunette with glasses, the other one has straight blonde hair.

I’m not digging the new generic covers, they’re so low effort but maybe they have different covers for different audiences?

There’s a third illustration where the man looks different yet again HERE

Oh my god😭 would be so funny if it’s part of the plot that this man changes appearance every time he looks in the mirror. That would make MORE sense than this mess😆

*just to clarify, this isn’t me trying to accuse the artist or the author of whitewashing or anything like that. I’m genuinely curious what’s going on with the skintone difference, that’s all.

How strange. I get that it could be two different artistic interpretations but it feels weird to have them both on the same product 😅
