Photo Article: The tale of Grandpa Miers and his 100 km walk, hooking up with young nurse poppy and he hits the finishing line

By Tom Winnifrith | Monday 20 May 2024

At the 58 kilometre mark our hero Grandpa Lucian Miers had been abandoned not only by his family members including a niece who was running not walking the whole course. A thunderstorm, later upgraded by Grandpa to a hurricane, had left those laggard walkers heading into a tea stop drenched. In the corner there was a young lady, about the same age as Grandpa’s daughter who lit up a fag…

The whiff of nicotine, a now forbidden pleasure, was too much for our hero, a pathetic addict, and he strolled over and bummed a fag and started chatting. The young lady turned out to be a nurse called poppy from Poole Hospital who was raising dosh for MIND. She worried that she might not finish as her feet were in agony and said, what I really need is someone as slow as me to walk with me.

In the manner of Leslie Phillips, Grandpa responded. “In that case I think I am your man.”

Ding Dong.

A friendship was born and the two walked on together. But at some stage Nurse poppy developed a sort of trench foot. And Lucian waited patiently for three hours as she was treated, stating that Poppy had got him through his low points so that was only fair. The net result is that the two hobbled along together and over the line together at c 8.30 PM, thirty six and a half hours after the start.

Lucian says he has no contact details for Poppy so if she is reading this please get in touch as he’d like to say thank you. I spoke to him this morning as Grandpa was trying to cross a road near his Dorset hotel. He says walking this morning is a bit difficult.

Well done to Lucian for making it. I did sponsor him as he raised money to fight Motor Neurone Disease. If you have not sponsored him yet please do so HERE.
