Young Sheldon, the spin-off prequel series centered around the childhood of The Big Bang Theory character Sheldon Cooper, has recently concluded with 7 successful seasons. It explored the iconic TBBT character’s past and shed light on several events that were hinted at in the main show.

Surprisingly, the prequel show took a big challenge when they introduced characters exclusively for the show who were entirely absent in TBBT. However, most of the fans were shocked to realize that Dr. Sturgis was not even mentioned in TBBT’s finale even after playing a key role in shaping Sheldon Cooper’s celebrated career.

In the memorable Noble Prize acceptance speech, Jim Parson’s adult Sheldon does not mention anything about the man who got him into Physics, Dr. Sturgis. But the Young Sheldon makers did a fabulous job when they cleverly addressed this plot hole in the spin-off’s Season 6.

How did Young Sheldon fix the curious absence of Dr. Sturgis from The Big Bang Theory?

After The Big Bang Theory gave us one of the most iconic pop culture nerds in Sheldon Cooper, Young Sheldon perfectly explored the childhood of the character. The prequel also revealed how the Iain Armitage character’s first mentor Dr. Sturgis played a pivotal role in his love for Science.

The fans have often heard the mention of TV scientist Professor Proton in TBBT. But it was Dr. Sturgis who was responsible for Sheldon Cooper’s attachment to Science. The Young Sheldon makers played a clever move when they revealed in Season 6 Episode 18 that our titular character dismissed Sturgis as his mentor.

Although Sheldon and Sturgis continued to remain on good terms, our child prodigy dismissed him as his mentor after he refused to help him in his research for extra-terrestrial life. Looks like the character lost significance to Sheldon which ultimately led Sturgis to be absent from his speech.

While many fans may believe that Sheldon Cooper should not have humiliated such an important character, it cannot be denied that it was one of the most clever ways to fix this plot hole.

The Wallace Shawn character also made appearances in the 9th, 11th, and 13th episodes of Young Sheldon‘s final and Season 7. The final season also established that Dr. Sturgis motivated the character to leave Texas to pursue his future studies.

What do we know about Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage?

Young Sheldon was one of the most successful series for CBS. Following its conclusion, the network wanted to continue the Coopers’ story in another spin-off Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage.

Mandy MacAllister is another prominent character from the Iain Armitage series that did not find any mention in The Big Bang Theory. The character played by Emily Osment was introduced in Season 5 and went into a relationship with Sheldon’s brother without knowing that he is 10 years younger.

Georgie and Mandy’s relationship took a wild turn when the latter became pregnant with Georgie’s child in Season 6. With Sheldon mentioning in TBBT that Georgie had numerous ex-wives in the past, it is evident that the series will not feature a successful love story.

According to Screen Rant, the sitcom will go back to the traditional multi-camera approach, unlike the style of Young Sheldon. Will Sasso and Rachel Bay Jones are also reported to return as Mandy’s parents in the spin-off, with Chuck Lorre, Steve Holland, and Steven Molaro returning as producers.

It will be interesting to watch if any of the TBBT or Young Sheldon characters also mark their return in the spin-off.

Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage is set to premiere in the fall of 2024 on CBS. Young Sheldon and The Big Bang Theory can be streamed on Max.
