Department of Surgery resident Autumn Beavers, M.D., has received the Fulbright scholarship and is set to study in Tanzania for the 2024-2025 academic year.
“It is truly the honor of a lifetime to become a Fullbright scholar and have the opportunity to live and work in Tanzania,” Beavers said. “Being able to research and study abroad, while gleaning understandings that will benefit my career wherever I may practice, is an incredibly rewarding enrichment to my residency.”
The UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine alumna began her general surgery training in 2022. Her clinical and research interests include global surgery and alleviating health disparities.
During her time serving in the Peace Corps, Beavers lived in Burkina Faso for two years educating children on health and science topics, as well as leading a health initiative for middle school girls.
She received the Gold Humanism Honorary Society Award for her exceptional clinical and interpersonal skills as a medical trainee and has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health INSIGHT Fogarty program.
The Fulbright United States student program offers accomplished graduating college seniors, graduate students and young professionals from all backgrounds the opportunity to expand perspectives through academic and professional advancement across 140 countries.
The scholarship is a prestigious academic honor awarded after a rigorous application process in which the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship board reviews the applicant’s potential impact and reasoning for studying abroad.
