The nominations for the 2024 Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland have been announced, with the National Theatre of Scotland’s Dear Billy receiving four nods and touring company Tortoise in a Nutshell receiving seven across two shows.
Dear Billy, a tribute to Billy Connolly dubbed “a love letter to the Big Yin”, has been shortlisted for best production and best new play, while creator Gary McNair been nominated for best performer and director Joe Douglas for best director.
Tortoise in a Nutshell received four nominations for its devised show Ragnarök and three for its children’s show Ginger.
Other shows to receive several nominations include the Edinburgh Royal Lyceum Theatre’s adaptation of Muriel Spark’s The Girls of Slender Means, the Tron Theatre’s revival of Caryl Churchill’s Escaped Alone and Dundee Rep’s adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s Sunset Song.
There are eight nominees for the gender-neutral category of outstanding performance, from which there will be two winners.
The winners will be revealed at a ceremony at the Theatre Royal Glasgow on June 16.
CATS co-convenor Joyce McMillan said: “We’re delighted to announce a shortlist that celebrates such a wide range of Scottish theatre, from the smallest scale to the most epic and spectacular.”
She added: “The judging panel would like to congratulate every professional theatre company in Scotland, on every scale, for the tremendous efforts they make to remain creative, productive and inventive, in what are exceptionally tough times.”
