The SBTG x XLARGE Collection’s arrival is more imminent by the day, and the full-circle moment decades in the making is nigh. “I knew the day would come, even if it took 24 years,” Mr. Sabotage (Mark Ong) reminisced in an interview in lieu of the collaboration.

The seeds were planted more than two decades prior, in 2000, when he worked at an XLARGE purveyor in Singapore. While his SBTG brainchild was still incubating in his mind, the legacy streetwear brand from Los Angeles’ Vermont Avenue “gave [him] a lot of influence in terms of starting [his] own.”

For this nostalgic homecoming, the designs are a unique blend of influences, reflective of the diverse subcultures he has embraced throughout his life. “I’m a punk rocker before a skateboarder, and then an artist. In that order,” he declares.

And this ethos is evident in the collection, with homages to the DIY aesthetic of ’80s and ’90s punk flyers and ransom notes. A fitting tribute to his deep connection to these movements.

L–XL | US$82 / SG $110 / AU $125 / NZ $135

SBTG x XLARGE GLOBAL LIMITED EDITION MASHED-UP S/S T-SHIRT (BLACK)

Reminiscent of punk’s mosaic design language, the SBTG x XLARGE GLOBAL LIMITED EDITION MASHED-UP S/S T-SHIRT draws inspiration from the cut-and-paste MO of ’80s–’90s gig posters, and ransom notes.

Like the letters and images clipped from magazines, the t-shirt becomes greater than the sum of its parts. Two tees become one, strategically merged to showcase mirrored versions of XLARGE’s OG and SBTG’s Arabic-script logos.

Enzyme-washed heavyweight cotton (230GSM) delivers a lux soft feel and a lived-in aesthetic, while single-stitched hems and chain-stitched shoulders are employed, echoing the vintage t-shirts of the era.

Like the letters and images clipped from magazines, the t-shirt becomes greater than the sum of its parts. On the front, Mr. Sabotage’s signature skeletal motif takes center stage; while the inverse features mirrored versions of XLARGE’s OG and SBTG’s Arabic-script logos.

SBTG x XLARGE S/S T-SHIRT (BLACK)

While the first two tees reference the cut-and-paste MO of gig posters from decades past and ransom notes, the SBTG x XLARGE S/S T-SHIRT in Black, strongly underscores the legacy of XLARGE as a pioneer of Los Angeles streetwear culture.

Their iconic OG logo is presided over by SBTG’s Arabic-script branding, highlighted in vibrant teal against the monochrome backdrop. The contrast derivative of punk’s “chaotic harmony”.

SBTG x XLARGE x PUMA SUEDE CUSTOM
(NOT FOR SALE)

The SBTG x XLARGE x PUMA Suede Custom was created to celebrate the launch of the apparel collection. The iconic PUMA Suede is seen artfully merged with SBTG’s own Archive Sneaker, mirroring the deconstructed aesthetic of the clothes.

With Black, White, and Warm White as the base palette, the PUMA and XLARGE logos lay claim of the tongue tag while juxtaposed against SBTG’s. They preside over the bespoke black laces imprinted with SBTG’s Arabic-script branding. At the forefoot is the golden lace dubrae molded in XLARGE’s typeface logo.

Familiarity takes center stage where the PUMA Suede forms the front half, before transforming midfoot into the Archive Sneaker, engulfing the sockliner and the heel. The punk-inspired, DIY motif is further emphasized by the red, undone decorative stitching at the upper’s base, as seen on the lateral profile.

While not available for purchase, the SBTG x XLARGE x PUMA Suede Custom will be on display at the SNKRDUNK Singapore Flagship Store.
