[Event] The Court of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen | Dragonstone | 276

Event

[Open RP for Dragonstone, the seat of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. Rhaegar is now living permanently on Dragonstone, but still visits (TPs to) King's Landing every 2-3 months before quickly returning home. Safe to assume that all threads wouldn't be fully private unless specifically stated--the Crown Prince would usually have a Dragonteeth or his assigned Kingsguard around.]

Dragonstone is a castle on the island of the same name at the entrance to Blackwater Bay, below the Dragonmont. It isthe original seat of House Targaryen in Westeros, and had been colonized and fortified as the westernmost outpost of the Valyrian Freehold. Shaped from stone to look like dragons, the castle has a eerie reputation.

After Aegon's Conquest of the Seven Kingdoms, Dragonstone in the newly-created crownlands served as the seat of their heir apparent, known as the Prince of Dragonstone. In the 9th month of 274AC, marking manhood, Prince Rhaegar Targaryen was named Prince of Dragonstone by his father, King Aerys II Targaryen.

The Prince of Dragonstone commands the direct allegiance of the houses Velaryon of Driftmark, Celtigar of Claw Isle, Bar Emmon of Sharp Point, and Sunglass of Sweetport Sound. Alongside their lordly vassals, the Prince of Dragonstone commands the allegiance of the knightly houses whom reside on Dragonstone: House Quince, House Bullock, House Blackberry, and House Scales.

Household

The Maestar of Dragonstone is Maester Lucas, an old Maester of two and seventy. The castle's sept is managed by Septon Gaemon, Brother Mattheus, and Sister Rhaenora. The guard of Dragonstone is led by its captain, Ser Darrold Bullock, though Prince Rhaegar maintains a personal guard, newly minted the 'Dragonteeth,' which Ser Arthur Dayne and Ser Nestor Royce currently lead. There is an adequate Sea Watch led by Captain Tristimun. Other notable positions of Dragonstone's court are the Castellan and Steward, Ser Clement Scales, and the Master-at-Arms, Ser Harrold Bullock.

Architecture

Dragonstone was built by Valyrians with arcane arts, fire, and sorcery. Capable of liquefying and reshaping stone with dragonflame, the dragonlords used their magic to shape Dragonstone to look like multiple dragons.

Dragon architecture can be found throughout the castle, such as small dragons framing gates and dragon claws holding torches. A pair of great wings cover the armory and smithy, and dragon tails form archways and staircases. The citadel of Dragonstone is wrought all of black stone. Doors can be set in the mouths of stone dragons. Instead of merlons, gargoyles and grotesques serve as brooding crenellations along the three curtain walls. Designs include basilisks, cockatrices, demons, griffins, hellhounds, manticores, minotaurs, wyverns, and other creatures. Statues in the shape of dragons can be found all over the castle. Dragonstone has a castle yard and a library. There is a fishing village with a port beneath the curtain walls.

The Stone Drum is a massive tower which serves as the central keep of Dragonstone. It is named for the booming and rumbling sounds that can be heard during storms. To reach the Stone Drum from Sea Dragon Tower, one must cross the gallery and pass through the middle and inner walls. A high stone roofed bridge arching over emptiness leads from the Stone Drum to the entrance towards the dungeons. The Chamber of the Painted Table is a round room on the top floor of the Stone Drum. It holds a large table, the Painted Table, carved and painted in the form of a detailed map of Westeros. Prince Rhaegar often held meetings of the Dragonstone council in the Chamber.

Aegon's Garden can be reached when going down after the arch of the Dragon's Tail. Within grow tall dark trees, wild roses, towering thorny hedges, and cranberries. The garden has a pleasant piney scent. Prince Rhaegar can often be found playing his silver-stringed harp in Aegon's Garden.

Most days when not practicing at painting or continuing her lessons with Dragonstone's septa, the suddenly-very-lonesome Ophelia Tully would be found in the gardens. It was the place that reminded her most of home, Riverrun's overflowing godswood a regular comfort for the growing girl. Now, however, she would hover around and try to catch Prince Rhaegar playing his music. Finding it curious, often as sad as it was pleasant, she never disturbed him; only listened from afar. Living on Dragonstone meant that she had ample opportunity to get to know him. But the songs he sang and the notes he played told a lot more about Rhaegar than his words could.

(Feel free anyone on Dragonstone to come say hello to Ophelia)

The sky was overcast that day, and Rhaegar’s melancholic tune weaved its way through the cool breeze in the air. Each silver string of his harp hummed a sad yet sensitive tune, as if he was speaking his heart to the world through his fingers.

Noticing the girl, Rhaegar would finish his song and wave at her. She had hung around him often, though they did not often speak. He appreciated that in a sense, the two enjoying what they could together without false conversation. “You look lovely today, Lady Ophelia,” he offered, breaking the silence and apparent agreement.

I bet you say that to all the maidens, Ophelia remarked. She'd presented herself as the smitten young girl, trying to idly win the prince's affection. But she was more perceptive and capable than either Rhaegar or her father truly gave her credit for. At the very feast they met, he must have danced with several others. She saw at least two Dornish girls, one Martell, one Dayne. Both prettier than she, and more presitigious, no doubt. But there is still time for me to win the day...

"Thank you, my prince." She spoke, abashed, surprised by him engaging for a passing chat. "I've spent some time studying the styles of the Rhoyne, and beyond. I find I'm much more free to try interesting dress, here, than at Riverrun. My family are not particularly... well-fashioned."

She teased a smile. "Do you prefer it here? Than you do in the city, I mean?"

The Great Hall is carved in the shape of a huge dragon lying on its belly; the heavy red doors of the hall are set in the mouth, and those entering pass beneath the gateway teeth and through the dragon's maw. Prince Rhaegar received public court in the Great Hall.

Sea Dragon Tower, shaped like a dragon gazing serenely out across the sea, includes the Maester Lucas' chambers and the rookery. Rhaegar often consulted his maester and made the climb of the tower to see his own letters personally sent.

The Windwyrm is a tower shaped like a dragon which seems to scream defiance. It provides suitable quarters for guests of Dragonstone when there is not room in the Stone Drum.

The sept of Dragonstone, dedicated to the Faith of the Seven, contains statues representing the seven aspects of the Seven gods, carved from the masts of the ships that had carried the first Targaryens from Valyria, but have frequently been repainted since then. The statue of the Crone has pearl eyes, the Father a gilded beard, and the Stranger looks more animal than human. Prince Rhaegar was far from the most pious prince, but far from the least as well. He was found at least weekly praying in the sept and consulting Septon Gaemon.

The cells of Dragonstone have an entrance by a turnpike stair and smooth stony passage. Walls in the dark dungeon are warm to the touch.

Off the beaten path was where Ser Brynden Tully preferred to spend his time. His job was clear - to look out for Ophelia. While the knight was on Dragonstone, he kept mostly to himself. Drinking and passing time with sailors in Hull, investigating the lowest crags and the deepest caves he could find, without straying too close to the volcanoes. And of course, swimming in the bay, until the water started to turn too cold. He'd venture up to the castle proper once in the morning and once in the evening to bid a greeting to his niece and, if he was around, the prince she was supposedly going to marry.

Brynden would, at some point, seek out his cousin Hendry Bracken. Who I am fairly sure also lives on Dragonstone and serves as one of Prince Rhaegar's sworn swords?

When Arthur was not guarding Prince Rhaeger, in the yard or with Ashara he often could be found exploring Dragonstone. The harsh beauty of the island captured him and the solitude you could find was something he had long missed since he left Starfall.

Arthur was hiking through the mists going deep in a direction he was yet to explore. The air was cool and he could feel the rain stick to his hands and face in little droplets. He came upon a cliff and was shocked to see another soul maneuvering the terrain below him. He recognized the man as one of the new arrivals to Dragonstone. Arthur put his hands up to his mouth and yelled to the man in the distance, "SER BRYNDEN, IS THAT YOU DOWN THERE?!"

As the waves crashed around him, Brynden could barely make out where the yell had come from. His hair sopping wet, the knight span around with abandon, instinctively stepping toward where he'd lain down his sword belt. The Tully was topless, shivering, bottom half soaked from where he'd been dipping in and out of the freezing waters. He clapped eyes on the bright hair of the young Dornish lad above and grumbled.

"No! But I get that a lot!" He shouted back, panting. "I'm an assassin! I've come to kill the prince! It took me fucking ages to swim the bay!"

Without awaiting a response, the Blackfish shook his head and pulled on a plain brown overshirt, beginning to pack together his scant few possessions.

Arthur was not often one for jests but that had got him. He let out a chuckle and yelled back, “You've got your work cut out for you then!"

The young knight's eyes went to the sheer cliff face in front of him, How in the hells did he get down there. Arthur began to carefully climb down, hands red and bloody by the time he got to the bottom.

He approached the water's edge and looked at the waters. He simply nodded and began stripping his shirt. "Where are you off to, ser?"

The newest member of the Dragonteeth, Ser Garrett Flowers, finds himself in a new home surrounded by strangers. His success in Rhaegar's melee had granted him a place here, meaning unlike the rest of the Dragonteeth who had acquainted themselves with Rhaegar and Dragonstone (he presumed), Garrett knew none here save the crown prince, and even he was mostly a mystery.

Garrett spent a lot of time at the training grounds, trying to improve his skills to match his new position. He would be happy to acquaint himself with any of the court of Dragonstone, but particularly with his fellow Dragonteeth.
