I'm growing to hate my job. Over the past year, things have deteriorated, especially since my boss/director returned from a six-month suspension in March following reports of harassment and poor management from a couple of colleagues, both white women. He's an older, very short, African American man, divorced with no children, and he floods my inbox with emails at all hours, even on weekends. We're also the only black employees on our team as well.

Since his return in March, he's made my work life unbearable. He keeps piling on extra tasks unrelated to my job, sets unrealistic deadlines, and constantly criticizes my work. He even meddles with my workspace when I'm not there. Moving sh!t around or putting things on my desk that he’s too lazy to put back himself.

I try to stay ahead with my work so he won’t have a reason to bother me, but he still finds fault and treats me like I'm incompetent. I'm currently experiencing stress-related health issues (skin is breaking out in stress hives), and frequently call in sick just to cope. On Mother's Day, he even emailed me about tasks I'd already completed a month ago, which he happens too often to ignore or doesn’t bother to check his email history because I always cc him on my completed tasks.

Despite the excellent pay, benefits, and perks like a flexible schedule and travel opportunities, I'm burnt out and unsure if it's worth staying just to vest in a pension another 4 years. Others advise me to tough it out and ignore him, but I'm too sensitive for this environment. I suspect he might be pushing me to quit. We just accumulated PTO on January 1st and I only have 24 hours of sick leave left and that’s supposed to last me until next January. I’m afraid, I won’t make it until then.

I've sought advice from my union, but they suggest I continue documenting issues without offering a solution because he isn’t really violating things. They’re also all retired firefighters so they have this bro hood and stuff. It’s very very difficult to cope with and I’ve tried switching to another department but nepotism is really deep at my organization. I was told the only reason why I was hired because nobody’s relative or personal friends wanted to work in my department and/or under his supervision.

What should I do? I make about 86K (no degree) and I’m an executive assistant. I also live in DC and the HCOL is one of the reason why my pay is the way it is. I can’t just up and quit because I got kids and rent. He’s even mentioned that I should update my resume with all the new duties he’s been giving me when I questioned him about the favoritism with the yt women on our team it comes to traveling to work conferences. He allows them to pick and choose their preferred locations and makes me go to the undesirable places.

Have you tried to have a conversation directly with him about all of your grievances? I would never advise anyone to prioritize a job over their health, but if you do decide to quit, make sure you have enough savings where you can support yourself for at least a year. The current job market is beyond horrible! The only jobs really available are paying minimum wage so $86k with no degree is a blessing. And search this site…I’ve seen so many threads recently from those unable to find employment so maybe that will help with putting your current situation into perspective. Best of luck with whatever you decide!

I'm a confrontational person by nature. I would confront him and calmly/professionally air out the grievances you stated here. Also, take some time off and go on a vacation. If he's a self hating **** don't internalize his bµllsh!t/negativity. Let him do him and you do you. Do your job and stay unbothered to his micromanagement, passive aggressiveness, and harshness. Literally, just "dead" it completely. He will get his karma and just due. I also do personal readings and tarot OP if you ever need further assistance or spiritual advice.

I have and that’s when he suggested I update my resume and apply for other positions elsewhere and that’s why I’ve been unhappy.

Yes and was advised to just continue to document things as he’s not really violating anything. I work in a white male dominated field so they don’t really care because I’m not one of them. My boss gets a pass because he’s a former firefighter just like the rest of them.

Well damn! I would do as he suggested but be prepared to make less in this current market. Something is better than nothing so don’t just quit.

First want to say you’re not too sensitive this is toxic. I don’t care what folks try to spin it’s an unhealthy place. I understand money I’m similar sans kids. Update your resume and do what is required until you can move. I may be a minority but someone being black esp if in a role of leadership esp with this persons track record is alarming. It’s like some take joy in causing harm to others as racism to me can be applied to those who look like you.

Girl, having a conversation with this type ain't gonna solve sh!t but just make it worse and give him even more of a reason to go after her. She's working for someone who is drunk on power. They already suspended him for 6 months for harassment....and still kept him around. Is this a government job? DO NOT QUIT. Listen to your rep.....record date, time, incident. Count all the emails he sends you over the weekends.....you have to make note of how he's treating your white colleagues versus you. Save up at least 3 months of these incidents (and hopefully you can survive that long) and report it to management.

Start looking for another job.

Sadly, I understand this. The union's ability to intervene may be limited if your supervisor did apparently not violate anything in the contract (yet). :(

Start looking for another job.

THIS!

86k with no college degree. How old are you?where are you located? How long have you been doing this job? Can you find another equally paying job?
My suggestion would be to enroll in college. Night and weekend classes. Time will go by fast. By the time the 4 years is up and you qualify for a pension, you will have a degree.

Don’t quit yet. With the way your boss is moving, he will be replaced soon. The 6month suspension was just a trial run. Are you religious? This is one situation I would engage in serious prayer and fasting. I had a similar situation a few years back. I prayed and fasted for 40 days. I couldn’t leave and get another equally paying job. God heard my prayers.

Regarding stress: create a playlist. Listen to it on your way to work, and on your way home
Read a book daily, even if it’s 5 mins
Take a hot bath on most days
Get a massage mat or regular massages if you can afford it
Have a stress relieving routine on a daily basis
Also, tulsi tea is a good adaptogen tea.
Ashwaganda tea, tablets, gummies, are good for reducing stress.
If you are Christian, reading a Dail chapter of the books of psalms and proverbs really helped me. You can even read while taking a hot bath.

But work on your exit strategy and go back to school while waiting on this pension. 86k is a lot of money. New grads in my area start off at 60.
If this job was paying 40k, my advice would be different.

One note: If the OP will pursue a bachelor's degree and is not coming in with transfer credits, then it may take her longer than 4 years for her to finish as a part-time student.

Sounds plausible. Hopefully, the OP won't get a replacement supervisor who is just as bad. :(
