Maya Rudolph embraces her Mother status with a musical “SNL” monologue: 'Bow down, children, I’m your mama'

Mother was truly mothering.

Maya Rudolph is ready to claim her rightful title of Mother. And what better way to do it than with a musical number fit for a motherly pop icon?

This weekend, the actress-comedian made her Saturday Night Live return just in time for Mother’s Day. She made sure to mention the timing during her monologue, noting that she’s a “four-time mom” and prompting cast member Bowen Yang to remind her, “But Maya, look — you’re not just a mom. You’re Mother. You were the first to slay the house down boots, queen!”

“Who, me? Mother?” Rudolph asked, feigning shock with a laugh, before adding, “You’re right!”

The host then kicked off her real monologue: a propulsive dance number, complete with a reflective bodysuit, in which she strutted through the hall of Studio 8H — a.k.a. the House of Rockefeller.

"I'm your mother / I'm your mother," Rudolph began, rapping. "I'm your... Oops, I've made you dance / Remember that movie when I pooped my pants? / When you were a baby, you pooped your pants and I changed your diaper / I'm your mother."

When SNL's Chloe Fineman and her dog interrupted and she asked if “dog moms” should also be celebrated in the Mother’s Day festivities, Rudolph did not hesitate to shut her down: "Honey, that's not a dog, that’s a bitch."

Continuing to balance the duties of mother and mom, she rapped, "Bow down, children, I'm your mama / Giving queen, giving drama / This place gave you Coneheads / It's 11:30, go to bed / Who's your favorite funtie? / It's me! Come on, hunty! / I will also turn this car around if you don't stop hitting your sister."

The rap monologue — which paid homage to Madonna's "Vogue" and Beyoncé’s Renaissance — culminated with Rudolph back on stage, surrounded by dancers and cast members alike as she declared one final time, "I'm your mother."

This weekend's episode marked Rudolph’s third time hosting since she left the SNL cast in 2007. She has also made several cameos on the show over the years, including her frequent appearances as Vice President Kamala Harris.
