Gerald Norman Springer was born at Highgate tube station in London during World War II when the station was used to hide residents from German bombing.

He grew up in Chandos Road in East Finchley. Margot and Richard Springer, his parents, were German Jews who escaped from Landsberg a der Warthe in Prussia.

Marie Kallmann, his maternal grandmother, was abandoned and perished in the gas vans of the Chemno extermination camp.

Selma Springer, his paternal grandmother, died in the infirmary of the Theresienstadt concentration camp.

Hermann Elkeles, a famous Berlin doctor who also perished in the Theresienstadt concentration camp, was the brother of Selma Springer.

Four-year-old Springer moved to Queens, a borough of New York City, and settled in the Kew Gardens neighborhood with his parents in January 1949.
