The Big Steam Adventure, 10 May 2024, Channel 5, “Isle of Wight”

The Big Steam Adventure returns for its second series, with John Sergeant, Peter Davison, and Paul ‘Piglet’ Middleton exploring the Isle of Wight, an island off the southern coast of England, known as ‘The Island’. In this second episode, the trio boards the Waverley, the world’s last passenger-carrying steam ship, and navigates the Solent, one of the busiest shipping lanes.

The episode, airing on Channel 5 on Friday, 10 May 2024, at 8 pm, sees John Sergeant, Peter Davison, and Paul ‘Piglet’ Middleton setting off on a journey to the Isle of Wight, a charming island located off England’s southern coast, across from Southampton.

They begin their adventure on the mainland by boarding the Waverley, an extraordinary vessel that holds the distinction of being the last passenger-carrying steam ship in existence. Peter takes the helm as they navigate across the Solent, a bustling shipping lane. While Peter navigates, John and Piglet explore the heart of the ship, discovering the powerful engines that drive it.

Once they safely reach the Isle of Wight, affectionately known as ‘The Island’, the trio links up with Ralph and his century-old Sentinel steam lorry. They embark on a scenic route along the Military Road, ultimately arriving at Carisbrooke Castle. Here, they not only explore the island’s rich history but also engage in a game of boule, with John graciously treating Piglet and Peter to dinner at the renowned Crab Shack near Ventnor after losing.

The following day, they continue their exploration by visiting the Isle of Wight steam railway. Peter immerses himself in the restoration of one of the historic carriages, and they also travel aboard Calbourne, an impressive steam engine with a 135-year legacy.

For the final leg of their journey, John and Peter experience an unusual mode of transport as they are towed behind Dragon Fly, a converted steam roller that has been transformed into a spectacular Showman’s wagon, replete with dazzling lights.

However, there is only room for two, so a caravan is attached for John and Peter to ride in. The solid tires provide a bumpy ride for the final stretch to Bembridge, but the unique journey is worth it. As they relax with a drink, taking in the harbor view with the beautifully illuminated Showman’s wagon, they reflect on their magical journey across the island.
