As far as I'm concerned 'Terminator 2: Judgement Day' is the best film ever made, not even due to the cutting edge effects at the time, but the characters, themes, plot, beautifully executed ongoing action, and EXTREMELY tight script. One of my favourite little character moments in the whole thing though is this:

John just helped rescue his Mom from the psycho ward, and they just escaped the T-1000 by the skin of their teeth. Sarah is still confused and freaked out by Arnie being there helping them, but even in her confusion her priority is John. She motions to him and he thinks she wants a hug but is crushed to discover she's checking him for bullet holes.
It's ALMOST funny, and sets a new tone, but it's not being played for a cheap Marvel laugh. It's setting up their character dynamic, it's fricking great before anyone says a word, and boy does it ever pay off later.
Makes me think of this quote:
But while the Star Wars prequels were merely 'dense' in terms of the amount of CGI crap on screen, and maybe the thickness of this motherfricker's skull, Terminator 2 is efficiently packed with character shit like this while the plot and equally dense action is happening.
It's why Rey is such a nothingburger character in Disney Star Wars - it's the opposite. You don't know jack about her character after she and her mates have been running around doing random shit for three hours.
Also Marvel quips in dramatic moments would benefit from staying more like this. When it's just a joke, that's all it is for better or worse, but when it's a character thing, it's doing double-duty and doesn't matter so much if it's ha-ha funny.
eg. Guy shows up in a ridiculous spangly outfit and starts giving NYPD directions.

Might become a nice thread, it does have potential. Anyhow, I'm gonna post 3 of my all time favourite scenes ever, in no particular order:
1. The Mr. X monologue from JFK
2. Babylon 5, season 4, episode 18, the entire episode.
3. The phone booth scene (followed by the Diner scene) from Miracle Mile.
All of the things I mentioned are causes for me to literally stand up, point the finger at the screen and stammer "KI- KINO! THIS IS KINO" over and over again.

It is literally an above average blockbuster and nothing more. Its stupid cinema for stupid people (like you) who demand nothing more in a film than an A to B story with plenty of action/shooting and that's fine. It is among the best at what it does but what it does is mindlessly entertain, theres nothing original nor great about it. Everything is over the top and there is zero subtlety to anything in the film because its an American blockbuster.

About what I figured. Muh blockbuster somehow equals simple. It has a bodybuilder shooting guns in it and time travelling robots, so it can't be a good story with themes and characters. kys you pathetic piece of shit.
blockbusters are simple by design. They are made for mass appeal. The best blockbuster will never be the best film soley due to this. You can admire a blockbuster for it's execution and it's competency at entertaining you for 2 hours. But they very rarely have any depth or artistry to them. They very rarely have anything original to say or any original ideas. There are only so many shooting/fighting scenes you can watch until it all becomes boring choreographed dancing that you already know the outcome to because you're watching a blockbuster. The good guy wins and despatches 500 mooks, then fights the main bad guy too and also wins. Terminator 2 does rise a little bit above thisi will admit, due to it's sci fi elements and ideas (a lot of which are just stolen from the first film) but not by much. IDK maybe you're just a massive pleb. Think of it like this. You telling me that Terminator 2 is the best film of all time, is like some normie telling you that the avengers 3 is the best film of all time. Its like, yeah its a good superhero movie. But its still a loud, dumb superhero movie with almost zero artistic value. Terminator 2 has more artistic value than it by a mile and something like The piano teacher has more artistic value than terminator 2 by a mile because it is actually saying something. The film has a point of existing beyond being a vehicle to make money via entertaining you. Im not the biggest fan of haneke in the world but am using his film to make a point. Something like terminator 2 isnt even in the same league as something like the piano teacher in it's execution, density, it's artistic choices, realism, etc etc. Terminator 2 looks like a kids film in comparison because it's so shallow and juvenile. I get the 'all films are films and this distinction between art films and normal films is meaningless' idea but you really should delve deeper than the kiddy pool if you actually enjoy watching films.

All of the T2 fights and firefights have weight behind them. The Matrix's shit is straight out of a videogame with all of it feeling weightless and nothing but empty flashiness. It being on purpose because 'muh Matrix' doesn't excuse it. "Duuude he dodged bullets in slow-motion!!" should never have been worshipped like it was because it's all spectacle, even if the camera rig they set up was interesting.

Even with its aged effects, even without the effects, Terminator 2 is a great fricking movie because the CGI literally doesn't matter, it's just icing on the cake that it's as good as it is.

And that entire script is character driven and all ties together across the whole story. Just the way John covers the chip in that scene and Sarah can't hit it because she can't harm John, and it's not just that, it's that John knows it, and uses it. But then takes his hands away and leaves her with the choice.
Sarah Connor is all kinds of traumatised and mentally fricked up from her experience, hospital drugs, hatred for Skynet, hatred of Cyberdyne for getting the Terminator parts from the first film and then lying about it leaving her to get tossed into the nut house, she still needs to stay alive to save the world, protect John, and instill in him all the skills he'll need. All of that shows in Hamilton's performance. b***h is trying to do the right thing, but she's at least a little crazy in actual fact by this point. Dreaming about nuclear blasts every fricking night, where she's trying to warn the version of herself - the feminine woman she really is and desperately still wants to be - only to see the consequences of what happens if she allows herself to be that for even a second, in Technicolor.
Her reaction to seeing Arnie walk off the elevator is pitch perfect. All her fricking nightmares come true all at once, and she barely even knows what to believe anymore with all the drugs and shit:
She sees Arnie, she sees John, then the T-1000 walks in and starts doing some super crazy sci-fi shit. What would you think if you were in the nuthouse being medicated? The fact she even gets her shit together enough to get the frick outta there tells you about her character too.

My favorite moment in that film is just before yours - seeing Sarah's badass escape, only to see her absolutely melt in abject terror when she sees Arnie come out of the elevator really perfectly sells what a horrid ordeal she went through in the first movie.
Far out. I didn't realise Michael Biehn played a creepy stalker fan in a movie only a couple of years before the first Terminator:
Makes me think of T2 where you'd assume Arnie was the bad guy again at the start and the movie is built that way, where you don't see the T-1000 actually kill the cop or change clothes, so you'd naturally assume he was another human character until the guns n' roses confrontation at the Galleria. Spoiled by the marketing of course.
Likewise if you'd seen 'The Fan' in 1981, it would have been easier to mislead you that Reese might be the 'Phonebook Killer' hunting down Sarah Connor before the big reveal. It's still a little ambiguous what he's up to, like maybe they're both bad in some way, but they pretty much give the game away. And would also have been spoiled by the marketing back then too anyway.

I doubt anyone of the zoomers here even heard of this movie so I'm not spoiling anything.
Everything about the end to Escape from Alcatraz is so well done. How the grinning dummy head shakes as if it's laughing, the terse dialogue between the warden and the guard, the warden sniffing the flower and then throwing it into the water, it's a perfectly enigmatic ending to an unsolved case.
