The Gathering Storm: chapter 22 - spoilers

The Gathering Storm

Phwoar that was a ride. I honestly thought that Min was a gonner. It’s a shame to see Semirhage out of the picture though as she was my favourite of the forsaken. I can’t see her coming back though due to bale fire thought.

Rand seems to have ended up being a cold hearted bitch after this though. I’m hoping he will revert to his “two rivers” self at some point before the end of the series though. I still think he’s a bit of a softie deep down

Yeah that chapter was def brutal. Rand was already on a downward slope mentally and this isn't helping. I miss good ole' book 2 Rand lol. Sure he was pretty dumb and usually said the wrong thing but he was charming and still somewhat of an underdog, plus he didn't have the weight of the world on his shoulders yet.

Brutal. Rand was put in a situation where he felt like he would break from the emotion (guilt, shame, pain, sorrow) of what he was doing, so instead he just kinda muted all the emotions.

I think some of this is RJ’s Vietnam experience coming out. Soldiers who suffered from shell shock or battle fatigue or whatever they call it sometimes have a flat affect, that is they don’t react or show emotion, and are detached from others.

Rand is definitely going through some PTSD (well, the whole series really, but the box and this have got to be two of the tipping points).

FWIW strap in. This is the teaser hill of the rollercoaster of a ride that is book 12.

It only gets better from here.

I’m hoping he will revert to his “two rivers” self at some point before the end of the series though

Generally character development doesn't go backwards that way. He has been through so much that there are elements of his two rivers self still there, but he's not that boy anymore. People don't do that either not just characters. If you've experienced a lot you will change and grow and continue to change you'll never go back to who you were before that happened.

I understand that. I suppose what I meant was a “redemption arc” sort of thing where he reflects him past self more at the end of the story. He’s done a lot so far, he won’t ever be the same but I hope at the end he’s got more recognisable traits of rand at the start

Ahh ok gotcha. Well you'll have to Read and Find Out there! Enjoy!
