Apparently Rocksteady was the one to choose the live service angle for SS:KTJL not WB Games

Does everyone forget that Sefton Hill and Jamie Walker worked on this game for years and promoted it at 2020 & 2021 DC Fandome events?

DC's Suicide Squad is just cursed at this point, literally no adaptation has knocked it out.

Given how successful Batman is, still shocked they didn't go with a prequel a la Origins.

I still stand by the idea that a genuine Suicide Squad game could've worked if it took the idea of being "disposable assets doing the government's dirty work" and ran with it. But nah, they gave us a game about killing the Justice League and doing it again but this time retextured fighting Brainiac thirteen times because looter-shooter micro-transaction live-services are the future. Pain.

I mean Arkham shadow is apparently going to be after origins but before asylum sooooo….

Sean Gunn knocked it out with The Suicide Squad. The Assault on Arkham and Hell to Pay animated movies also kicked ass.

I think it's a great premise but I am looking to get some good JL adaptations

Gunn did a good job with it I think.

people like to cope and pretend jamie and sefton didnt have a hand in the game. The real reason they left rocksteady was to avoid getting any blame for the disappointment the game turned out to be. I mean im pretty sure Sefton wrote most of the story for SS too. Kinda shitty of them to do that ngl

Edited

Proof?

Edit: Yes he’s in the credits and wrote the story, not followed the game or played it so wasn’t aware. If you’re mad I wanted a source/verification, get a life.

look at the games credits? plus they were the heads of rocksteady up until the game was nearly finished so it was obviously their decision? use common sense 😭

Obviously they were involved, proof he wrote the story? Or do you think you can just deflect the question 😭

i just said check the games credits ⁉️⁉️

They left because of the game

Credits literally says main story is written by sefton hill and Ian bell. Both wrote the story of Arkham knight too.

I know, we’ve covered this further down

Yeah I think its time to say Sefton and Jamie realized by the last sections of the development cycle that this game wasn't going to do well or be mixed at best and once Kevin died they were screwed so they left to save their careers.

Either that or they were "gently persuaded(TM)" by Sweet Baby and couldn't quit because of contractual obligations or something. Dunno though, just speculation on my part.

That isn't something that company would have had anything to do with. Just because you've decided Sweet Baby Inc is the root of all evil doesn't mean they are.

u/Superslash515 avatar

Sweet baby is just a writing firm though, why would they care to do that?

Sounds like Sefton found sense. All the same: Bring back Paul Dini.

found sense? ehhh. He kinda fucked over his own studio then left to avoid consequences 😭. But yes, bring back paul dini.

You do realize Sefton is part of why Dini was kicked off in the first place right?

My lip's curling so much, if it curled any further, it'd be like a Fruit Roll Up.

Nah, man, Dini's Batman is kinda boring (at least to me).

u/sharkfinsykes avatar

You do realize the Arkham games are written (and inspired) by Paul Dini, right? 😂 How can you say his Batman is boring while on a sub for a game literally inspired by his interpretation of Batman?

u/Alone_Comparison_705 avatar

Rocksteady's Arkham Batman has great villains and a great atmosphere of the world, but Batman as a character, especially in the first two games is boring to me. He doesn't change inside at all. Knight tried to change that but only made him even more distant to his family. Origins is my favourite out of four, because we see him actually emotional and that he has a character arc that is about being a better human for the ones close to him.

Well wasn’t the Rocksteady team replaced or should we say "upgraded" from what it had been back in 2011-2013 when they were still working on the Arkham series? I mean it’s been 10+ years, of course different people with different views would be in there by now, Sefton and Jamie or not.

I'm just curious if this isn't a case of Sefton/Jaime intentionally shifting to a live service model because it was more profitable or less stressful, or if it was the decision of other executives who technically work for rocksteady but only want to push good numbers in front of WB.

Single player games are critically better received, but multiplayer games come with more opportunities for profit and less overhead.

u/Mishmoo avatar

All while WB was endlessly talking about how they wanted to monetize their games.

Right.

u/Technicolur avatar

Plus, wasn't it still WB's idea to have the game be Suicide Squad

Jason Schierer has sort of off-the-record reported on this. Sure, Rocksteady wasn't forced to do a live-service game by WB. Only monetary incentives, laxer deadlines, increased support and decreased pressure to the studio were probably on the table if they "decided" to go that way.

When your parent company stresses to every one of its studios how they need them to do live-service and will take it into account when they review their portfolio (potentially putting your entire staff at risk), they're not forcing you to do anything. Sure. But are you really choosing for yourself there?

u/Throwaway54397680 avatar

At this point I don't care if KTJL is the result of the old Arkham devs or new guys, the game still fucking blows and I have no confidence in Rocksteady going forwards. If it's the old devs, they've lost their touch.

This game makes me miss Gotham City Impostors.
