If we put it together in a shaker terror and remake, the usual thing is to frown at the lack of new ideas in a genre that has always been highlighted. Although horror films have given us great remakes in the last twenty years, such as ‘The Hills Have Eyes’, ‘Halloween, the origin’ and ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ by Marcus Nispel.

This is one of those terrifying remakes that surpassed the original film. Perhaps it is not a film as popular as the previous ones – it is also true that here we do not have iconic slaughterers like Michael Myers either leatherface-, but it is a proposal that is worth recovering.

In 1973, George A. Romero, the father of zombies, would release ‘The Crazies’ which, without being one of the worst films in the history of cinema, is one of the most forgettable and weak in a filmography that includes key titles of the genre such as ‘The night of the Living Dead’, the film without which the zombies of ‘The Walking Dead’ would not exist, and ‘Zombie’, in one of those sequels that were better than the first film. In addition to adaptations of Stephen King such as ‘The dark half’ and ‘Creepshow’the film that brought together three of the most important legends in the history of horror cinema.

This modest production showed us the spread of a virus capable of driving people crazy in a small American town. There we met a small group of survivors trying to escape the city.

In 2010, Breck Eisner would update this failed Romero proposal with ‘The Crazies’tape that you can see in Prime Video and which is starring Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell. In this way, Eisner would start from a similar argument, but adding a devilish rhythm and showing off a more elaborate technical section.

In ‘The Crazies’a mysterious toxin in water converts to anyone who is exposed to it in a unscrupulous killer. The residents of a small farming town begin to succumb to an uncontrollable rampage of violence and the chilling massacre ends in bloody anarchy. In an attempt to control the epidemic, andthe army send an elite force to block the access to the city, isolating the few uninfected citizens that remain and leaving them at the mercy of ruthless killers that lurk in the darkness.

As we indicated in Fotogramas’ review of ‘The Crazies’, “this new version protected by Eisner’s expertise in designing and solving prints of rapid pulse and heart in a fistmakes a feature film where the scenic conviction and relentless pace with which the adventure unfolds suffocates any temptation to expand the frame of reference and extract something resembling an ideological reading.” Embrace the rural environment to feel chills again.
