First time and should we stay in Sutton

We are priced out of staying in London center . Our first time and have plans to explore the area where buckingham palace is, trafalgar sq, Westminster abbey. We found a reasonable hotel in Sutton but wondering if that’s too much out of the way . We want to have easy access to Heathrow via train / metro , we plan to have a day trip to Windsor castle or maybe hyclere castle , and of course we would like to spend a day exploring the tourist sights in the city center mentioned above . Should we try to get closer to the city or there train access from Sutton for all of the above?

Sutton isn't on the tube - it's about 40 minutes by train from central London and not particularly convenient for Heathrow. You could probably do better - if you look at the Premier Inn site you can sort by price and maybe come up with something more convenient

Where have you looked to be "priced out" - and how much is "too much"? The two leading budget hotel chains don't appear on consolidators' lists so have a look ar http://www.premierinn.com and http://www.travelodge.co.uk

sutton to/from Heathrow is a convoluted journey (as would be getting to Windsor or Highclere) - you can do better as regards transport (see above)

It's Highclere Castle BTW - when are you visiting as it has a limited season....

Sutton isn’t convenient and does not have a Tube station. You will be also paying a lot in fares.

I once lived in Sutton. You have to catch a train to London Victoria and change to the Tube there, or sometimes you can catch trains to Blackfriars. It suited my purposes at the time since I did not work in central London.

But I think it would be an inconvenient base for a tourist trip. You will be travelling into and out of central London with the peak hour crowds. It is also very inconvenient for a public transport trip to Windsor. You would have to change trains at one or more of the central London stations. Since I had a car, I drove to Windsor when I went there from Sutton.

I also agree that it is a convoluted journey from Sutton to Heathrow. I know from experience. It was about a 2 hour trip one way by public transport, and I did it several times. If you want easy access to Heathrow and Windsor, South London is not the place to stay. Maybe somewhere in the western parts of London, but I do not know that area very well.

If you give the price range per night that you are prepared to pay in pounds sterling (£) then people may be able to make other suggestions.

Indeed, given the criteria of Windsor, Heathrow and Hyclere, you should surely be looking West of the centre if you can't afford central London.

If you are willing to put your budget and dates up it will help in folks giving suggestions.

How were you planning to get to hyclere castle, by the way?

Sutton wouldn't be terrible for Windsor as trains go through Clapham Junction where you can pick up a direct train. It's not good for anywhere else on your list though

What is your nightly budget?

When are your travel dates?

How many of you in the group?

Someone might assist you with a search with somewhere more convenient.
